Sure Feels Right
Chapter Twenty
I was sitting in the den, binge watching some Grey's Anatomy when Robert walked in and tossed a pair of skates to me, "Put on sweats, we're going to play with some of the guys."
"What?"
"Hockey. We're going to play hockey." He ran to the kitchen to grab a few waters from the fridge.
I looked at the size and they would fit perfectly, but there was just one problem. "I haven't played in years, Robert. It would be a complete shit show."
"You're going to be on the ice with professionals. I think we'll be able to help you."
He pulled me off the couch and grabbed the sweatshirt from behind me. I slipped on a pair of vans and followed him to the car. It had been a while since I was on the ice with a stick in my hands. I wasn't sure how this would go, but I didn't really have a choice.
When we got there, the guys were dressed out in sweats and sweatshirts, just messing around on the rink. I quickly laced up my skates and grabbed the gloves and stick Robert had gotten for me. My skating was still perfect, but of course my stick handling was not the best. I mean there was a reason I was on defense.
We laughed, a lot. Mainly because I couldn't get a puck in an open net to save my life.
"So are we going to scrimmage?" Beau asked as he chewed on his glove. I never understood why people did that.. But I did chew on my stick. Both were equally unsanitary I guess.
"Sure."
Sid and Geno picked teams and even though I hadn't played in a while, I was picked second. Third, overall. Made me feel pretty good about myself.
"Thanks Crosby. Pick my future wife over me." Robert joked. He ended up on Geno's team and I ended up with Sid.
"He wanted you to be with your boyfriend." I laughed, pretty pleased with myself.
"She seems like a fighter. Could be helpful."
"I'll try not to make you cry, babe." I winked and skated over to the other side of the rink, taking my place. I wasn't all that excited to defend muscular men that were over half a foot taller than me.
Beau started messing with me, not even five minutes into our game. After a while I started to get pissed.
"You wanna fight Bennett?"
"Fight a girl? No. Fight you? Sure. You can't reach my face anyways." He laughed, looking around to hopefully see that someone would crack a smile. They all had wide eyes, refusing to so much as tilt up a corner of their mouth.
"I wouldn't have said that if I were you," Robert warned. I dropped my gloves and connected my fist with his jaw.
"I'm not that short you idiot."
"What the fuck Scarlett? That hurt." He rubbed his jaw, making sure it wasn't broken or anything.
"Yeah well," I shrugged, "When you grow up playing with guys, you learn to fight like one. I wouldn't have hit you if you didn't call me short."
Rob skated to my side and draped an arm around my shoulder, "That's my girl."
"Doesn't Vancouver have a girls league? I mean shit. I would've hate you see you across the ice."
"I may or may not have made them cry.."
"You make Sunshine cry." Geno started laughing and soon the rest of his teammates joined him. It took a while, but he finally laughed with them.
Everyone left, except me and Robert. We stayed there for hours, just messing around. We had big, goofy smiles and were acting like five year olds, just having fun.
"Come here," he motioned me over to where he was standing. "Scarlett, just come here. I want to help you with something."
I went over to him, stick in hand, wondering what he could want to help me with. He spun me, wrapped his arms around me, and placed my hands on the stick I was holding. With his hands still on mine, he helped me work on my shot.
"There. Now maybe you'll get one in the goal next time we play." He smiled, looking down at me. I blushed and looked down at my skates.
"Thanks."
"Think you can make it past me?" He challenged. I caught him off guard and skated around him, shooting the puck to the upper left corner of the net.
"Hey, I wasn't ready."
"You just got beat by your girlfriend," I taunted, sticking my tongue out at him.
"Excuse me, I just got beat by my fiance. Get it right." He laughed and pulled me in for a kiss. It was really cute that he would do all this for me. Actually everything he's done for me. Going to my cousin's wedding, bringing me to the ER when I was drunk, bonding with my father while I went with friends. He's wonderful, to say the least.
"Let's go get something to eat."
We opted for take out Chinese, ordering enough to feed a small army. Sitting on the floor of our barely furnished house, we talked about whatever came to mind.
"Beau thinks you hate him."
"Tell Beau I don't hate him, but I'm not a huge fan of sharing my fiance with him. And I'm not good with stupidity."
Robert smiled, probably thinking of Beau's reaction when he told him, "I'll make sure to pass that on."
"What made you go for someone like me, instead of someone quiet like Drew?" Surprisingly, I wasn't being all self concious, or anything. I legitimately wanted to know why.
We were complete opposites. She was so quiet and reserved. Would never hurt anyone. I was loud and brutally honest. While I never intentionally hurt anyone, it happened more often than not. It's something I needed to work on.
"Because I'm not Beau," he stated with a mouth full of fried rice. "No, uh. I guess I needed someone who isn't afraid to yell back or make fun of me. Someone who isn't afraid to be so honest, it hurts, ya know?"
"Yeah, I guess."
"Did you ever like her?" He paused, putting the noodles he was about to eat back in the box, "I'm not going to get mad. I really won't. I mean, I pretty much have you wrapped around my finger now."
"I did. I wasn't in love with her or anything and the feelings left as soon as they came. What made you ask that?"
"Not a clue. Just kinda came to mind."
He dropped the subject, not caring to talk about his best friend's girlfriend,"So when are you going to start looking for a dress?"
"My mom, Lilly, and Kenzie are coming into town to help me sometime soon. I should probably have an idea of what I wanted. I hear bridal consultants get pissed when you don't."
"I'm not trying to tell you what to wear or anything, but your ass would look fantastic in one of those mermaid like dresses."
"I'll keep that in mind." I smiled. I didn't really expect him to make that comment, but then again it's not all that surprising.
Laying in bed that night made me realize I wasn't ready for season to start. Being next to him every night was something I didn't want to give up. There would be times where I would be alone for almost a week. Even if I was tired and went to bed early, I wasn't able to get to sleep until he decided to join me. But if it meant he was doing what he loved, I think I could handle it.
I woke up at an unreasonably early hour the next day, so I started to make breakfast. And by breakfast, I meant bacon.
"That smells good." Robert walked to the fridge and grabbed the jug of milk before pouring us two glasses.
"Your nose wake you up?"
"No. I rolled over and you weren't there. Then I smelled the bacon." He wrapped his arms around my waist, looking over my shoulder.
"If you wanted anything besides bacon, you're on your own."
"Why is there a bottle of Jack open?"
"I used a little whiskey.." I flipped the pieces over, causing it to splatter everywhere, "Okay. I used a lot of whiskey. So I might not be going anywhere because I don't think that this is going to boil out the alcohol or whatever."
"I don't have anything to do." He took a drink straight from the bottle and cringed. "Nope. Still not used to it."
If anyone thought me and Robert ever acted like adults in a relationship, they were wrong. We went from five year olds to teenagers getting drunk from bacon. Most of the time, we were idiots though. He's the love of my life and I'm glad I gave him a chance after that baseball game.
The bacon didn't get us much past buzzed, but we still sat in our pajamas almost all day.
"What do you want to do today?" He asked from the table.
"We could just get really drunk and watch tv."
"Yeah, but what if Drew goes into labor."
"Well that sucks. Forgot you had to be there for your boyfriend. She's like a week away from her due date isn't she?" I paused for a minutes, realizing there was only a week until preseason games started. "Hold up. Why don't you have to go to practice?"
"Got the day off."
"Yeah, but why?"
"I um. I did something to my hip. Since it's just preseason, they're being more cautious. I'm probably fine."
I grabbed the dishes from in front of us and brought them to the sink, "Not a huge fan of 'probably' but I guess you know your body better than I do."
We moved from the kitchen to the living room to sprawl out on our super comfortable couches and probably not move until we were hungry again.
"What time is it?"
"Uh.. Almost four, why?" He got up causing me to fall into where he was sitting. Thanks for the warning, Robert.
"Let's go to the Pirates game."
Not wanting to get ready, I took one of Robert's hats to cover up the mess that was my hair and threw on my leggings and the v-neck I got at the last baseball game I went to.
It was weird being in a suite instead seats Rachel got us. Now that she was married, she was in the wives box. Still got us tickets on the regular though.
I limped down to the seats, causing a few of the players to laugh at me.
"Long night?" Martin asked.
"More like hockey kicked my ass yesterday. Hockey really kicked my ass yesterday." I slowly lowered myself down onto the seat and grabbed my water from Robert.
"We heard you screwed up Beau's jaw too."
"She didn't screw up my jaw. It's just sore and bruised," he huffed, plopping down on the other side of Rob.
"Don't fuck with me, that's all I'm asking, Beau." I shrugged and finished my water before tossing it in the garbage can just a few feet away. "Waddup!"
"Where's Drew at?"
"Friends are in town. They're out doing girl stuff. Why aren't you out doing girl stuff, Scar?"
"I'm saving my girl time for when I go dress shopping." I grabbed Robert's water right out of his hand and finished it.
"Yeah, I wasn't going to drink that or anything." He got up to get two more.
"Sorry, whiskey makes me thirsty." I shrugged, trying to act innocent.
"You've already been drinking?" Beau looked at me with wide eyes, probably trying to figure out how drunk I was. The answer is: I'm not.
"I had some whiskey bacon this morning. It was on point."
Robert dropped two bottles in my lap before sitting back in his seat, "I'm not going to get you any more. So if you drink these, you have to get your own."
I raised my brow and opened a new bottle, "Uh huh."
He could here his teammates start laughing, "What?"
"You'd go find her Fuji water if she asked for it."
"Yeah, probably." He mumbled before kissing my cheek. The fact that everyone was watching made me blush. Good thing he was the only one that noticed.
Thanks do much for the link. Beautiful gown. She's being quite the B**h about everything. So he made the wrong choice. Grow up. Not sure if want to be around her either.
