Sure Feels Right

Chapter Twenty-One

With season pretty much here and grad school in full swing, our schedules were pretty busy. But after my morning class on the Thursday before his first game, we made plans to spend the day together. Grab a bite to eat, do a little shopping, and just relax for the most part.
"What do you mean you're going to dress me? I'm not Beau, I can dress myself." Robert complained as we walked through the mall.
"But you need a little more color in your wardrobe." I walked into a store, directly to the men's dress clothes. The wall in front of me had button ups in a lot of different colors. I looked for the size he needed and started handed him the ones I thought would look best.
"No." He tried protesting.
"Yes."
"Fine." I smiled, pushing him towards the dressing room. Robert had enough suits, but he really needed some new shirts.
He walked out in a dark, yet bright, purple one, still buttoning it up, "I'm probably going to get made fun of if I wear this."
"Yeah I'm sure you get made fun of for all the sex you have too." I flipped down the collar and straightened out the wrinkles of the shirt. "Alright, go change. We're going other places too."
"Oh great." He mumbled.
Four or five stores later, Robert decided he had enough, "We're going to eat."
"Why? It's only four."
"You're starting to be a bitch. You need food." He put away all the clothes in his hands and led me out of the store. "What do you want to eat."
"Cheesecake. Wait, white chocolate raspberry cheesecake."
"Okay, whatever."
Robert drove us to one of the restaurants we went to quite a lot. It was small, and I'm not sure many people knew about it, but the food was amazing.
"Mr. and Mrs. Bortuzzo. It's nice to see you again," The hostess greeted us. Robert looked to me to see if I would correct her, but I let it go. I would have to get used to that at one point and I would prefer sooner rather than later.
"What time does your family get here tonight?"
"9 I think. I can't remember."
"My mom get's here at 8:30 so that works well."
"Shit. I forgot she was coming. How is that going to work?" I looked over my menu, hoping he would have an idea.
"We can get my mom a hotel room."
"No. We have my old bed, the couch pulls out into a bed and I'm sure we have an air mattress somewhere. See. I solved the problem. Oh, and I'm going dress shopping tomorrow so I hope your mom wants to come."
"Yeah, I'm sure she'd love that."
Instead of going home before picking up our family members, we sat by baggage claim and people watched before they arrived. There would be four people come but we figure out that Robert's mom can sit in the front and the rest of us can squish in the back since we were all family.
"Fuck." I mumbled. That feeling that I always get, that most girls get, when Mother Nature comes to visit every month.
"What?"
"It's a few days early this month." I didn't turn to look at him, just kept my gaze on the little kids running around and parents trailing close behind. He was silent and I could tell he was trying to figure out what I meant.
"Ooh." He finally got it.
"I'll be surprised if I don't cry when I go dress shopping tomorrow."
"It won't be that bad, Scarlett."
"Yeah. I'm not picking out the dress I'm going to get married in. It's no big deal at all." I looked up at him and cracked a little smile. I knew I'd be fine, but once my mom starts crying, I'm screwed.
"Well if it makes you feel better, I'm sure you're going to look stunning no matter what dress you pick."
"And you totally want to see it on the floor that night, don't you?"
"The prettiest dresses are worn to be taken off."
"Sucks that all you get most of the time is sweats and a sweatshirt." I nudged his ribs with my elbow.
"Don't forget about about the jersey."
"Just the jersey?"
"Just the jersey."
We got up to check the flight schedule to figure out which carousel we would have to meet our family members. I found the information I wanted and started to walk away. It didn't take much time for him to catch up with me, though. Having long legs like his must be nice.
"Excuse me, can I get a picture?" A little boy in a Penguins hat approached us as we waited for Robert's mother.
"Sweetie, don't bother-"
"Ma'am, it's fine." Robert smiled and kneeled down next to the kid. He stayed to have a conversation with the two people. Soon, the two people became four as the little boy's father and older brother joined.
"I see your mom. I'm going to go help her."
"Scarlett! How are you?" She let go of the suitcase and gave me a hug.
"I'm great. How was your flight?"
"A little bumpy, but I've had worse."
"Hi Mom." Robert made his was to his mother's side and kissed her cheek. "We just have to wait for Scar's family and we'll head to the house."
"Oh, I have reservations at one of the hotels downtown so I won't be in your way the whole time I'm here."
"Mom, it's just a weekend, we have room."
"No, no. I'll be fine."
>> Your sister is worse than you when she's tired. I'm in hell.
I laughed at the text Kenzie sent me but didn't have time to reply because of my mom calling.
"We just landed and your sister is crabby, just a heads up." I could hear Lilly complaining in the background and I'm sure that was Kenzie laughing.
"Okay, we're by baggage claim." She hung up the phone and I went back to my conversation with Robert and his mother.
"I'm just going to apologize in advance for some of the words me and my sister might exchange."
Before I even knew that my family was close, Kenzie jumped on my back to greet me.
"How's my favorite person in the world?"
"I'm great, thanks for asking Kenzie." Robert replied, earning an eye roll from not only me and my best friend, but his mother too.
I hugged my mom, as did Robert, and introduced everyone.
"We are staying at a hotel because Lilly doesn't want to sleep on the floor." My mom was clearly fed up with her shit already and they still had three more days together.
"Well I don't." She snapped.
"You're such a little ball of sunshine." Kenzie laughed and squeezed Lilly, just to piss her off.
We dropped everyone off at the hotel and went straight to bed. The next day would be long and stressful. I had a class from nine to noon and something told me I would not be getting ready. At all.
I rolled out of bed and made it to class on time. It just wasn't exactly a pretty sight. Kenzie texted me for most of my lecture, apparently everyone went out to breakfast together while my stomach was making noises and worrying the girl sitting two seats away. I realized that I still had no idea what I wanted my dress to be like. Good thing I still had three hours until my appointment.
After class was over, I ran home to change so I would look somewhat acceptable and met everyone at a restaurant downtown. Mrs. Bortuzzo was a saint to be willingly hangout with my sister while she's being a bitch.
When we got to the bridal shop, the lady that would be helping us out for the day brought us back to a set of couches. She had everyone pick out a couple dresses and then let me decide which ones I would give a chance and which ones would go back out.
I tried on the one that Robert's mother picked out. It wasn't floor length, but just short enough that you could see my ankles and a little bit of my shin. The skirt had roses all over it and a beaded belt around my waist. I walked out to show everyone and stared myself down in the mirror.
"I don't like that one on you as much as I thought I would." Mrs. Bortuzzo admitted. I started laughing, I'm glad she's being completely honest with me.
I walked back to the dressing room to try on another. This one I think Kenzie picked out. It was gorgeous. It was form fitting with leaves throughout the whole dress. It wasn't the traditional white color, more of a grey with lots of white lace, but it was still beautiful.
"Wow."
"You look amazing, Scarlett."
"I picked a good one, didn't I?"
"It's gorgeous. Looks amazing on you, but it's just not you." My sister said and she was right. It wasn't me at all.
I went through all the dresses they picked out for me to try and went to look for some that I liked. There were only a couple that I had chosen and both were very different styles. One was strapless with a sash, tied into a bow on the left side. It was a ballgown, but the bottom was different. It reminded me of one of Alice's dress in the remake of Alice in Wonderland. There were pieces of tulle and lace with different lengths. It was so different than anything I had seen and I loved it.
"I don't like it," Lilly told me.
"I don't like you."
"Girls." My mother warned us. Not like it would help.
"Well, I have one more that I liked."
The second one was simple with thin straps. For lack of better words, the pieces of fabric that cover my boobs had lace on them and the waist was pleated. The skirt of the dress was plain fabric that matched the waist. I walked out to the mirror and stopped before I could get all the way to the pedastal.
This is it. This is the dress I'm getting married in.
"I think this is it." I quietly said, but it was loud enough for people to hear me. I turned around and my mom started crying. She knew.
"You look stunning, Scarlett. Robert's going to love it." My eyes started to water and I fought back the tears as much as I could.
"My best friend is getting married!" Kenzie jumped up and hugged me.
I had my mother take a picture of me in the dress before going to change into my street clothes. I took another picture of the dress, but only so that the white material could be seen. While I was getting ready, everyone had decided they wanted to go shopping. I decided to pass. I had been shopping too much in the past week.
Robert was taking a nap when I got home. As much as I wanted to climb in bed with him, I decided to crash on the couch for a while. I didn't want to bother him. I ended up falling asleep watching The Proposal. Not before the Get Low scene. That was the best part of the movie.
I woke up to a text from Rob telling me to come grab something from him in the locker room when I got to the arena. I never understood why girls always wanted to be in there with the guys. Okay, I do. But I've heard things I did not need to hear. I'm scarred for life because of being in there for maybe five minutes.
"Did you find a dress?" Robert looked up at me, pushing the hair out of his face.
"Yeah, I did." I bit my lip, thinking of how perfect it was.
"Can I see it?"
"No."
"Can I see it?" Kunitz asked.
"Yeah of couse." I pulled up the picture of me and handed my phone off to Chris. Robert was behind me pouting, I could tell even without looking at him.
"You look beautiful, Scarlett." Sid told me.
"Yeah, you really do." Chris added.
"Let me see." Beau demanded.
"Alright, calm down."
I walked the phone over to him and blew a kiss to Robert. He wasn't happy that I was doing this right in front of him.
"Wow Scarlett, you look amazing."
"Yeah. Robert should be saying that about Drew.. But I should probably get to my seats now." Rob followed me out the door, shirtless. "Alright. You really have to stop doing this if you want to have a serious conversation."
He smirked, "Yeah. Well I'm sure what my teammates have been saying is an understatement."
"Only 10 months until you get to find out. Good luck, babe. I'll try not to swear in front of your mother."
"Just try not to out swear her."
"I love you." I called down the hallway, my voice bounced off the walls.
"I love you, Scarlett." He yelled after me.
