Sure Feels Right

Chapter Twenty-Six

Living in a suburb was good and bad all at once. It was convenient because I wasn't too far from school but we did have neighbors. I don't mind having them, but I grew up where I had to ride a bike fown the road a little to get to the next house so it was a new experience for me. Kind of.
For it being a night in early March, it wasn't that cold out. It was actually really nice so we decided to sit out on the porch swing with some hot chocolate. We were cuddled up for a while before a few of the neighborhood kids started playing in one of the driveways.
"You know what would be fun?" I asked him.
"Going inside and being warm?"
"Actually, I was thinking you could probably make those kids' day if you went down and played with them." Without saying anything, he got up to go inside and grab some of his gear. He tossed my gloves and a stick at me before heading down the steps and walking over to the kids. They couldn't have been older than nine or ten, but their faces lit up as soon as they saw us coming.
"So you know Malkin?" One of the little boys asked. Robert just nodded his head. "He's your friend?"
"Yeah," he laughed, "But I think he likes my wife more than me."
"Fiancee." I corrected him, "It's completely true though.
"Yeah same thing."
We stood there, talking to the kids until their parents made them go inside.
"I'm freezing," Robert complained as soon as we got inside.
"Poor thing." He wrapped his arms around me, squeezing me as tight as he could. "Stop stealing my body heat, asshole."
"But I'm cold."
"Take a hot shower."
"Okay." He picked me up and brought me to the bathroom with him.
"I didn't mean with me. I'm tired and want to go to bed."
"Well we could go to bed.." He started playing with my sweatshirt.
"I guess I do need to shower.." He turned on the water as I started to shed my clothes.
After we had our mostly innocent shower, we curled up on the couch to watch a movie. Or two. Hockey season sucked, but it made me appreciate these little moments so much more. Time had been flying by lately and I wanted it to slow down. Even if that meant our wedding wouldn't be here as soon as it feels like it should be.
"How's Kenzie doing?"
"I think she's good. I don't talk to her much. I talk to Tyler quite a bit though. He said she's doing better, though."
"I'm surprised she doesn't want to talk to you."
"Yeah, well, I don't exactly want to talk to someone that's going to call me fat. Even if it's Ana talking and not Kenzie." This was really a touchy subject. I hadn't quite gotten over what she had said. I couldn't tell you why. Maybe it was because I never expected something like that to come out of my best friends mouth.
"You're not fat. Even if you think you are, you aren't. You're perfect."
"Let me guess. You're all about that bass, no treble?"
"Do you know how many times I've gone to practice and that song was stuck in my head?"
"You're welcome." I kissed his cheek and got off the couch. "I'm going to sleep. Good night."
"I'll be up in a little while. I love you."
"And I love you."
Naturally, I couldn't sleep until he came to bed. I tossed and turned for a while before he cuddled up next to me and I was able to get some rest.
"We're going on a date tonight, so if you could wear something other than sweats, that would be awesome." Robert was out of breathe when he dropped his bag by the door. He quickly grabbed a jacket from the closet before heading out again.
"Wait. What are you doing?"
"Lunch with the team. I'll get you around 6:30." I looked at the clock and realized it was only noon. "Love you!"
"Love you too."
I wasn't sure what he had planned, but I figured I could get away with skinny jeans or leggings. I was in the middle of cooking my lunch when Rachel called.
"Scarlett, I need your help." Her voice was filled with distress and I wouldn't be surprised if she was crying too.
"What's going on?"
"I need 200 cupcakes by 6."
"You what?" I dropped my fork, making a loud noise.
"Can you please help me? Katie and Taylor have the 200, but I need 400 total." I got up to raid the cupboards, hoping there were some cake mixes that I could start right away
"Yeah. Go get me about 10 boxes of mix, whatever kind you want, and cupcake wrappers and tins. Oh and a shit ton of frosting. Eggs might be good too." I didn't ask what she needed them for because I'm sure she would tell me while we were baking.
I found a big enough mixing bowl to put both of the boxes in and started on our ridiculous project. I turned up some music and got lost in the baking. Until my friend walked in with arms full of grocery bags.
"Let's do this." She set everything on my table.
"We need more help." I told her after I realized how many cupcakes we still needed to make and frost after an hour. "I'm calling Drew." I picked up my phone, getting frosting on the case. "I really hope you aren't doing anything, so I hope you can come make us cupcakes." I didn't give her a chance to reply before hanging up and switching out the batches in the oven.
"So why exactly do you need this many cupcakes?" I asked her as we frosted the ones that had cooled down.
"Because my office is doing this kids night thing with the Pirates and it's huge and the bakery backed out last minute."
"That's a shitty thing to do. Oh well, it wouldn't be this much fun." I got up and smeared frosting on her cheeks.
"Scarlett," She whined, "You're going to ruin my makeup." Then got up and did the same thing to me. Soon, there was a mess of frosting all over my kitchen.
"When you said you needed frosting, I assumed that you needed it because you ran out. Not because it was going to be a kitchen decoration." Drew appeared in the kitchen with Hudson on her hip.
"Oh you're a live saver." Rachel walked to her and grabbed the grocery bags from Drew. "Thank you so much."
"Yeah well, we don't do much to help the Pens wives, so I figured I should probably help a Pirate out." She took the seat next to me, setting her little boy on her lap. I started making faces at him, making him giggle.
"Do you guys ever talk to the other girls?" Rachel looked between the two of us with a confused expression.
"Well, the married moms are really chill and sweethearts. We like them. But then there's the girlfriends. Like I'm not a fan of Jay's girl and I called out some girl that was using Olli. Sutter's girlfriend is really cool though. They've been together forever. But other than that, we're kind of the outcasts of the group."
"Were you actually trying to be friendly?" Rachel asked.
"Surprisingly, yes." I dipped a piece of graham cracker in a container of frosting and ate it. "Neal's girlfriend didn't like me. I wonder why."
"James didn't like you. That's probably why." I laughed, remembering the day before I left on spring break. We really did not like each other and it was pretty funny. I mean now that he was in Nashville, who was I going to harass?
We sat around talking and frosting cupcakes, passing the child around so that we could get our fill of baby until the next time. We still had at least 50 to make and frost when I needed to get in the shower. I quickly got ready and let my hair air dry, hoping it would just dry normally so I wouldn't have to do anymore.
>> Coming to get you early. Be there in 20 minutes.
I looked at the clock and it was only 5:15. My hair was going to be wet and the cupcakes wouldn't be finished for a while. I ran out to my kitchen with one boot on and started to worry.
"Robert is going to be here in 20 minutes and I'm not going out with wet hair and we still need more cupcakes."
"Go dry your hair, we have this covered. Katie and Taylor made extras." Rachel tried calming me down. I don't know why I was the one freaking out. It really wasn't my place to be.
"I'll clean up when we're done." Drew offered.
"I love you both." I took a deep breath and went back up to my room. I guess things were going to work out for everyone.
Robert picked me up and brought me to the riverfront park before dinner.
"Why here?" I asked as we walked along the riverside.
"I love walking down here and I was getting tired of losing to Beau on xbox, so I figured I'd bring you down here."
"It's beautiful." I murmured before promptly slipping and falling on my ass. "Damn."
Robert laughed and helped me back to my feet. "I can't take you anywhere."
"Yeah, yeah. Whatever. At least I didn't break something this time."
"That's true. I didn't exactly want to spend our date night in the emergency room." He laughed and gently brushed his lips against mine, "But if I had to, I'd want to be with you.
I was curled up in bed with our growing puppy. Not only did he make it past eight weeks, the vet says he's going to be a full size, healthy dog. I almost cried when she said that, I was really happy that he was going to be a part of the family. It just shows that a little faith can go a long way.
"I told you, I don't want him in our bed." Robert mumbled as he put away some clothes.
"What's wrong with Stanley on our bed?"
"It's not just him on the bed. I ask you to do something and you don't listen to me." He started to raise his voice. He was getting really irritated over something so small.
"What?" I sat up and our puppy jumped off the bed, running downstairs.
"You don't do anything I ask." He snapped.
"You're right. I haven't been planning this wedding or doing laundry or cleaning the house or hey, going to grad school."
"It would be nice if we could spend some time together." He wouldn't look at me. I tried to get his attention, but he kept ignoring me.
"We went on a date tonight." I whispered, hoping he would just let this go.
"That's not what I mean." He said through a clenched jaw.
"Then what do you mean, Robert. Cause it seems to me like I'm just not good enough for you."
"You're just so damn moody and emotional and my god, can you be a bitch." I grabbed my pillow and went downstairs. I grabbed my candy from the kitchen and a bottle of dr. pepper then locked myself in the bathroom until I heard him stop walking around upstairs.
I went to the guest bedroom and put clean sheets on the bed before grabbing blankets and making a nest with my puppy. There was no use crying. Out fights never usually lasted long, but I wasn't sure when this one would be over.
