Sure Feels Right

Chapter Twenty-Nine

"Scarlett, Scarlett get your phone." Robert mumbled as he rolled over. Both of us were excited that we could sleep in and we were taking full advantage of this rare day.
"That's not my phone. Let me sleep."
"That's not my ringtone. Answer it." He was now shaking me, trying to get me to pick up the ringing phone.
"Fine. I'll get it." He reached over the top of me, laying on my midsection and making it hard to breath.
"Damnit Robert."
"Scarlett's phone. Oh yeah. She's right here. It's Megan." He handed me the phone and rolled off me, snuggling into my side.
"Hey what's up?" I started running my open hand through my fiancé's hair. He's going to be out in five minutes, tops.
"I'm keeping the baby."
"Oh that's great." I was surprised it had only taken her a few days to decide. I was almost sure it would have taken her over a week.
"I just- can you go to the appointment with me? Jay planned on it but something came up. If-if you can't I'll call Drew." She was tripping over words from being so nervous. I would most likely be the same way.
"Yeah, yeah of course. When is it?"
"Oh-"
"If you can't make it, that's fine." She interrupted me.
"No I can. I'll bump back plans with Robert and I'll pick you up." Robert groaned in protest, but I think Megan needed support more than he needed lunch right at 11:30. "Are you at Jay's?"
"Yeah. I am."
"Okay I'll be there around 11." That still gave me at least two more hours to sleep.
"Thank you so much Scarlett."
"Yeah, you're welcome. Try to sleep a little before the appointment."
"Okay I will."
I ended the call, putting my phone on the night stand.
"There's going to be a baby Megna isn't there?" Rob murmured into my chest.
"Yep."
"Good. That'll keep us busy until you want to have kids."
"I feel old-ish." I wasn't really sure why. Of all the people I hang out with, I was one of the younger ones.
"You're two years younger than me. I feel old."
"I mean, everyone is having kids or getting drunk. I'm sleeping in and planning a wedding. "
"We always get drunk." It's true. Some nights we had cuddling sessions on the floor, other nights we definitely got drunk and danced around the house.
"Throw a party." That actually wasn't a bad idea. I mean, it was a Friday. The Pens didn't have a game until Sunday. It was perfect.
"Send a text to everyone. We're going shopping after lunch."
"Yeah, sure." He rolled over, attempting to go back to sleep.
When I picked up Megan, she looked terrified. As she put her seat belt on, I could tell her hands were shaking.
"Everything is going to be fine." I reassured her, pulling out of my parking space.
"He- he's talking about getting a house. An- and getting engaged. It's all just happening so fast. I don't know what to do."
"You don't have to get engaged. Beau and Drew have known they would be parents for over a year and she just now got a ring. If you aren't ready for that, you need to tell him. I cannot stress that enough." She took a few deep breaths, trying to calm down. I finally found the place I was looking for and parked in the first spot I could find.
"My parents don't know yet. I don't know how to tell them."
"How do you think they'll react?"
"They love Jay.. I think they might wish we would have waited, but I think they'll be supportive." That's always good. The last thing she needs is parents that are going to grill her about getting pregnant before finishing college.
My parents, however, want a child 9 months after we get married. They would also accept 6 months. They just really wanted a grandchild and Lilly wasn't giving them one any time soon. Kenzie wasn't exactly available either.
"You'll be okay. Let's just get through this appointment first." I squeezed her hand, hoping it would make her feel a little better.
After the appointment, she came with me and Robert to lunch. Megan said she would be at the party for a little while tonight, but we all knew she would make an appearance with Jay and then leave. Hockey players were extremely protective of their pregnant wives or girlfriends. Robert was already at that level, I didn't exactly want to find out what it was like to be carrying his child.
"What all do you want?" Robert asked as we wandered around the liquor stored I used to frequent. "I told everyone to bring what they wanted, but we are running pretty low."
"Jack, Jim, and Jose. Maybe some Johnny too." I told him, grabbing a couple bottles of flavored vodka.
"Jack yes, you don't drink tequila."
"It made my clothes fall off one night. Freshman year was not good to me." I cringed, remembering the night I lost my skirt and had to walk across campus in spandex. "But Drew drinks tequila."
"She can also put away smirnoff like it's water."
"Country girls can out drink pretty much anyone." I grabbed a few bottles of wine and a bottle of Jack before looking for a bottle of Kraken.
"Drew isn't really country anymore. She lives in the city with Beau. The most California Californian." I stopped and gave him a funny look. I knew what he meant but didn't really understand why he said it the way he did.
"You can take the girl out of the country but you can't take the country out of the girl. If Drew has a daughter, you can bet your ass she's getting a horse and learning to rodeo."
"Jesus. My wallet hurts every time I bring you in here."
"When was the last time we came here?" It was a real question, I really had no idea when the last time we actually bought alcohol other than a bottle of wine at the grocery store or some beer here or there.
"It's been over a month, so I guess that's not horrible."
"My wallet hurts every time I go grocery shopping so we're even."
"Hey Scar." Smith greeted me as we started putting the many bottles on the counter.
"Hey, haven't seen you in a while. How is everything?"
"Great. I'm taking a year or two before getting a real job. Just going to work here and mess around. How's grad school?"
"Hell. But we're having a party tonight if you and a few friends wanna join." We had a decent sized house for the two of us, but it might be a little crowded tonight. Yay for basements.
We got back to the house and put all the alcohol in the garage freezer. I was sitting in the kitchen with my head on the table as Robert searched the fridge for who knows what.
"Why don't you go take a nap."
"That requires me to walk upstairs and I'm not about that life." I mumbled. He closed the door and pulled my seat out from the table before kneeling down in front of me. I climbed on his back and he brought me up the stairs.
Robert dropped me on the bed and left me alone in our room, "Hey. Get back here. I need you to sleep."
"Fine." He didn't put up much of a fight. I knew he felt the same way. "How do you sleep when I'm away?"
"I either don't or take zzquil if I have to."
I was out cold. I wasn't sure why I was that tired, maybe it was having to constantly reassure Megan that everything would be alright. Maybe it was all that liquor shopping we did. Either way, I slept until after 7.
"Sleeping Beauty is finally awake. Just in time for food too." He set two plates on the table, turning around to get silverware.
"I feel like death. I frickin' hate naps like that."
"Red bull is in the fridge."
After cleaning and taking a long shower, people were already starting to show up. Robert was talking to Andy and Smith when I walked downstairs looking like a frat boy with the backwards hat and the tank top. I don't think they would wear leggings though.
"Sassy, classy and a little smart assy? More like a lot."
"Damn straight." I took Robert's drink from his hand and finished it off then handed him the cup.
I stood in the kitchen, mixing my own drinks and watching the people start to gather around my house. I had a pretty good buzz going by the time that Beau and Drew arrived with Sutter and his girlfriend.
"Drew! I have a present for you!" I jumped off the counter and went to the freezer to grab the bottle of Patron we had. "Just try not to make out with my fiance this time. I will beat your ass and make you cry."
"That was one time. You weren't even there." She whined, taking the bottle and taking a pull. She had already been drinking. A lot. So had Beau.
"Oh my God. It's Sidney Crosby." I joked as he joined us in our kitchen. "A very, very, sober Sidney Crosby. We are getting you drunk."
"No, no." He tried protesting but I wasn't taking no for an answer. I wanted to experience him being drunk. There was no way I was the only one, either. I poured him a glass of coke and put a little more whiskey than I should have. I stuck around him until he drank it all, then poured him more.
Drew's POV
I was thankful that Chris and Maureen offered to take Hudson for the night. It had been a while since Beau and I had been able to have a night to ourselves, which I didn't really mind. Drinking is great, but I wasn't exactly 21 anymore. Beau however, could go like there was no tomorrow.
I was sitting on Scarlett and Rob's kitchen counter, watching everyone drunkenly talk to each other. The hosts of the party were in the corner, flirting with each other like they had just met. It was adorable, really. For once in his life, Sid was drunk. He was hitting on one of Scarlett's friends who was really enjoying it.
Frankly, I would too. But I prefer for the blonde, surfer looking Californians.
Beau was making his way across the room, stopping every once in a while to talk to people, but was determined to talk to me.
"Hey love," He grinned. He's been completely gone for a while now, but he's been attached to my hip for the most part. "Why don't we get drunk more often?"
"Because we have Hudson."
"Right. I'd rather play with Hudson than get drunk." His face lit up whenever someone mentioned our son and it was adorable. "I love you."
"I love you too, Beau."
"I'm sorry I'm such an idiot sometimes."
"We all make mistakes."
"I'm trying my best to change."
"Don't change. Just make smarter choices."
"You're the best, Drew. Let's go get more drinks." He helped me off the counter and went to one of the rooms where Beau stored our bottles. He grabbed the cup from my hand, pouring in some rum.
"Oh shit. That's a lot. Sorry." He slurred, drinking a little of what he just put in there then made himself something much, much stronger.
He had his hand on the small of my back as we joined the rest of the crowd. Sid was still with that girl, only they were attached at the lips now and Scarlett was walking towards the two of them.
"Hey this is great and all, but if you could keep my secrets a you know, secret this time. That would be awesome. We don't need another incident like the last player, mmkay?"
Huh. Wonder who the last one was.
I rested my head on Beau's shoulder as he talked to Phil and Olli about who knows what. I would participate, but I was so intrigued with the way that Robert and Scarlett acted around each other that they were taking all of my attention.
Whenever he looked at her, it was like he didn't care about anything else. He always had a huge smile on his face. They seemed to be inseperable, especially tonight. Beau was right, they are perfect for each other.
"I'll be right back, Drew." Beau left me alone on the back of Robert's couch and went off with the two baby Pens.
I sat there, finishing my drink up. It would probably be smart to start drinking water right about now, then again more alcohol seemed like a great option too.
"You look lonely." Scarlett hopped up on the couch with me.
"Do you ever notice the way Robert looks at you?"
"I notice that he watches me, yes. Why?"
"Just the way he looks at you. All the time." I wanted to say more, but I couldn't get the words out. "You're his world and I don't know. You two are perfect."
"Perfect? No. Far from perfect." She laughed, I guess she would know better than anyone else, "We're good together and we work on our problems. We both just really love each other. I know you've been told this before, but Beau looks at you the same way. Robert says all he can talk about is you and Hudson and how he can't wait to get married now."
There was something different about Scarlett tonight. Well, not different. Just a side of her no one really sees. Especially when she's drunk. She was so sincere and quiet. "Yeah, I can't either."
