Sure Feels Right

Chapter Three

Robert offered to drive to Toronto because his car got better gas mileage.. And after we went to breakfast the other morning, he was scared of my driving. We've been together pretty much the whole time since the game. My friends were getting tired of him, but I was really enjoying it.
Since we had already slept together, there was no rush. He knew it might take me a while to completely open up to a relationship. He wasn't pushing anything just yet, I think he just wanted to spend as much time with me as he could before training camp started.
"Do you really want to stay with your family?" He asked.
"Not really.." I mumbled.
I have a great relationship with my family, better than most college kids. I just didn't really like this whole idea of this wedding. To be honest, I felt like my family would be comparing me to my cousin. She was only a few years older than me so that meant I was the next one in line to get hitched.
I have no problem with getting married at a somewhat young age, but I just turned 21 a few months ago. Yeah, I could date Rob for a couple months and then get engaged like my cousin then have a wedding within four months of being engaged. Or I could graduate from college first and then see what happens from there.
And frankly, I didn't want to have to sleep on the floor.
"Okay, we'll get a room at one of the hotels downtown," He got off the interstate, already knowing his way around.
"How far is Thundar Bay from Toronto?"
"Like 17 or 18 hours," He told me as he pulled under the awning of what looked like a fancy hotel, "I'll be right back."
Robert left his car running and ran inside. I turned on my phone for the first time since we've been in Canada. Calling anyone right now would make me cry the next time I opened my phone bill, so I stuck with recieving messages. There would be a lot less tears.
"Okay, we have a room for tonight and tomorrow."
We walked up to the room together and I threw my bag on the floor. The bed looked so comfortable, I went over to it and curled up in a ball.
"All you do is sleep," Robert laughed at me.
"It's called being a college student. I'm always tired."
"You should really get ready so that we aren't late."
"Yeah. I could get ready. Or I could take a nap and be late," I smiled and pulled Robert down on top of me, hugging his neck.
"I'm trying to impress your family, I don't think they would appreciate us being late."
"Oooo. Someone thinks they're my boyfriend," I joked with him.
"Just go get dressed, damn it."
I grabbed the jeans and shirt I was going to wear out of my bag and paired it with my gladiator sandals. I straightened out the crease the ponytail holder left in my hair and didn't bother with my makeup. I don't think I even brought any.
"Alright, let's go," I shoved a pair of studs through the holes in my ears. If we left now, we would only be a few minutes late.
Robert was always so focused when it came to driving. Sometimes he hummed along to whatever was playing on the stereo, but not very often. I was usually singing my heart out or dancing. Probably not the safest thing to do, but it hadn't caused me to wreck. Yet.
Most of the people were sitting down by the time we got there. My parents, however, were still up mingling with other relatives. I went up to give my parents a hug and was met by the inevitable 'you're always late' lecture.
"I told you to be in town by 5," my mom said after giving me a hug.
"Oh we were. Then we went to get a hotel room.. And it took me a while to get ready," I explained to her, "Anyway. Mom, dad, this is Robert. Robert, these are my parents."
"Nice to meet you, Mr. and Mrs. Evans," he stuck out his hand for them to shake. My dad was visibly impressed with Robert.
"So, Robert, what do you do for a living? Are you still a student?"
"No sir, I'm a professional athlete."
"What sport?"
"Hockey, for the Pittsburgh Penguins."
My dad turned to me and joked, "You couldn't have found yourself a Canuck?"
"Robert kinda found me first," I laughed. It was a lie, but I wasn't going to say that any time soon. I was really glad my dad was a hockey fan, it made this a lot easier.
"What position do you play?"
"I'm a defenseman."
"Ahh. Easy to teach someone offense, but defense is somewhat of a natural ability. Ask Scar," Robert looked at me, silently asking what my father meant.
"Oh I um played hockey for a few years and was on defense.. I was really good too," I admitted. It wasn't something I liked talking about.
"I thought you didn't like hockey," my date asked me.
"Yeah. I don't mind it. I've just had bad experiences with hockey players."
"You can finish this conversation in a while," my mom stopped us, "I think we should get in line for food."
Being the typical Canadian family we are, everyone was asking Robert about hockey. He didn't seem to mind, I think he was just happy my family liked him.
As soon as we got to the hotel room, my hair went up and the sweats were on. Or more specifically, Robert's sweats were on.
"Are those mine?"
I looked down at the two sizes too big sweats and nodded, "Yeah, is that a problem?"
"No. You're just swimming in them," he laughed as he motioned to the bottoms, where probably half the fabric was pooled around my feet.
"Not all of us can be six four, ya know."
"You're right, just the lucky ones," he winked at me. I rolled my eyes and went to brush my teeth.
It was getting late, but neither of us went to sleep. I just played with his hand, tracing the lines of his palm with my fingers. Every once in a while, his hand would jerk back and he would itch it before letting me start again. I laughed every time he did. Apparently even big hockey players can be ticklish.
"I think you're a great guy," I started thinking out loud, "These past few days have been amazing, and I'm sure tomorrow will be too. I just- I've had so many bad experiences with hockey players, I'm scared you'll be the same way."
He looked at me for a while before answering, "I can't promise you I'll be perfect. I'll probably piss you off more than not, but I can promise you that I won't cheat on you with other girls while I'm at away games. Or with girls in Pittsburgh for that matter."
I want to believe him, I really do.
"Just give me a chance and if you don't want anything to happen, I'll leave you alone."
I thought about his offer. I knew that once I agreed to it, I would have to admit that I had feelings for him. I knew I did, but moving on at this point would be easy.
"Okay. I will. Nothing official for now though. Give it a month or two. Then I'll see how I'm feeling," he laughed at my response.
"Are you always this brutally honest?"
"Always."
"So how did you end up in Pittsburgh if you're from Vancouver?"
"I really have no idea. I came here when I was younger and fell in love with the town so I applied for a couple of the colleges around Pennsylvania and here I am."
We ended up only getting a few hours of sleep My alarm went off at 9 and I groaned.
"Go get ready. If you're late again, you'll never hear the end of it," Robert mumbled, "Get me up when you're out of the shower."
I quickly hopped in and out of the shower, not bothering to shave my legs. I'm had planned on wearing a maxi dress so that wouldn't matter. Still wrapped in a towel, I went over to Rob to wake him up. After a couple failed attempts, I had to resort to water.
"Alright, you asked for it," I squeezed the remaining water onto his face.
"What the hell," he shot up wiping the water from his face. I giggled and started combing out my hair, "You are something else."
I put some product in my hair, hoping it would dry straight instead of with random waves everywhere. Rob got out of the shower and I was still in my strapless bra and spandex.
"Put on some clothes," I told him.
"You put on some clothes," he laughed, "I just got out of the shower."
Since Rob was actually awake now, I could turn on some music. Getting ready without it just didn't seem right.
I'm not sure why my cousin decided on a 1 o'clock wedding, but it really messed up my eating schedule. My stomach was growling on the drive to the church and it was growling loud.
"Do you want some food?"
"Yeah that would actually be great."
"What do you want?"
"Whatever we see next."
"Easy enough. Looks like it's McDonald's."
"Medium fry and a large ice tea," This might ruin my appetite for lunch or dinner, but I wasn't a huge fan of fish anyway. I hope I got the chicken..
We quickly ate in the parking lot before going into the church. We were there over half an hour early, which was surprising.
We were almost to the door when Robert stopped me. He placed his hand on my cheek and kissed me. It made my head spin and my knees go weak.
"Whoa," I said after we broke apart.
"You have no idea how long I've been waiting to do that," I tried to think about the last time we kissed and I couldn't remember. Then it hit me. We hadn't since our hook up. Sure, I had kissed him goodnight but that was on the cheek.
"It was definitely worth it," I bit my lip, trying to hide the fact that I was blushing.
"Oh and by the way, you make that dress look good."
The ceremony was long and the church was ridiculously hot but I guess that's what happens when you have a wedding in August. I whined to my parents about having to stay for pictures, telling them they could photoshop me in. My family didn't think I was funny.
The reception was outside. It was beautiful, I had to admit. It kind of reminded me of the wedding in the Harry Potter movie with the tents and such. Maybe it was more like a circus.
I ordered a glass of champagne for myself and Robert a beer. It was an open bar but I don't think I'll be taking advantage of it tonight.
"So how's school going, Scarlett?" One of my great-uncles stopped to asked me. Here come all of the university questions..
"It's great. I only have a year left before I hopefully go onto grad school."
"Your grades are good and everything?" No. I'm failing out and that's why I plan on going to grad school...
"Yeah, I have a 3.5 right now."
"What's your major again?"
"I'm doubling majoring in dietetics and psychology."
"Oh that's right. Is that young man you're with your boyfriend?"
"It's complicated," I somehow managed to get away from him before he asked any more questions.
It had been a few hours since I ate and you could definitely tell. I started snapping at everyone when they were talking to me, including Robert.
"You're kind of mean when you're hungry," he joked with me.
"You're kind of annoying when I'm hungry."
"Wow."
"Just being honest," I shrugged and took a sip of my water.
"Yeah. Brutally honest," He shook his head, laughing at the fact that I wasn't going to spare his feelings.
