Sure Feels Right

Chapter Four

When fall semester started, I had taken a week off of work so that I could maybe go on vacation to Vancouver before class got too serious, but that plan fell through. Robert had started practice, so he wasn't always over here like he had been.
"Where's lover boy?" Katie asked as I cooked the four us lunch.
"Probably at practice or sleeping. I don't really know. Most likely sleeping, to be honest."
"You two have been attached at the hip since the baseball game and it's been almost two months."
"I'm sorry I've found someone that respects that right now all I really want is someone to talk to."
"We just miss Scar," I felt like I was in the middle of an intervention. A Robert Bortuzzo intervention.
"None of you are ever here. You can't get mad at me because you all of you have been with your boyfriends," I took the chicken out of the oven and set it on the stove. I wasn't hungry, so I took one of the pieces and put it in a tupperware container then placed it in the fridge.
"I don't have a boyfriend," Taylor seemed offended that I would assume such a thing. I rolled my eyes and filled up my water bottle.
"But really. We think you need a break from this guy. You've been spending way too much time with him," Rachel finally came out and told me.
"So you want me to stop hanging out with Rob because I won't be here to cook and hang out with you when it's your convenience?" They all looked at me, confirming what I had just said, "Fuck you guys. I'll see you later."
"Where are you going?"
"The studio," I grabbed my duffel bag and my keys before heading out the door.
When I'm pissed I drive too fast. Or faster than I usually do, I guess. It would be a miracle if I didn't get pulled over. Then again on the freeway, everyone speeds. I weaved my way through traffic, Kesha playing a little louder than necessary.
I got to the gym and prayed that the dance studio wasn't being used. I had to park a ways away because apparently everyone decided to work out today. Walking into the building, it was obvious that there was some sort of tournament there. The studio was open though.
Once I was in the mirrored room and the door was closed, I shed my sweats and long sleeved shirt to reveal a pair of spandex shorts and a loose tank top. It had been a while since I had been here so I took my time with stretching. The guy working said I had a few hours before it was going to be used.
I plugged my iPod into the speakers and started one of my dance playlists. This one was all my lovey, slow kinda songs. I don't know why I chose this, but I was in the mood for a little Ed Sheeran. I think I had gone through the entire playlist, or close to it at least. My ponytail was slowly starting to fall out.
The remake of I Need A Hero had started playing. I remember when this song first came out, I fell in love with it. I choreographed my sister's senior dance and it was probably my favorite piece I've ever done. I had started dancing like I always did, but I kept falling over. It took me four times to get it right. By the time I finished, I figured it was time to go. Once the music stopped, I heard someone clear their throat. I looked up to see Rob leaning against the door.
"Holy shit. You scared me."
"That was amazing, you know. Why didn't you tell me danced?"
"Because I don't," I grabbed one of the water bottles in my bag and finished it's contents then grabbed another.
"And I don't play hockey," I tried getting around him and through the doorway, but he wouldn't let me, "Seriously. You aren't that good if you weren't a dancer at one point."
"Yeah, well, shit happens."
"What's wrong?" His eyes were filled with concern.
"Apparently I've been spending too much time with you."
"Your roommates say that?"
"Yep."
"Yeah they didn't seem too happy to see me when I dropped by. Do you think you're spending too much time with me?" I shook my head.
"I love spending time with you. They're just mad I'm never around to cook anymore. Now that I have someone that actually wants to be around me, I'm not going to say home alone just so they have the option to come home and hang out with me. I'd rather be with you anyway."
"Will you cook for me?" I sighed, not really in the mood to cook again, "You don't have to, I just thought I would ask."
"Can I spend the night?"
"Of course."
"Okay."
I followed him back to his house. It was almost like I went there automatically, as of recently. I brought my bag in and set it by the door.
"Hey Robert?"
"Yeah?"
"Can I take a shower and then make dinner?"
"Yeah. Of course. Let me get you a towel," I grabbed what I needed from my bag and followed him to the bathroom. Rob showed me how to turn on the the water and left me alone. I was glad he wasn't expecting me to hurry or anything. I turned off the shower and stood there for a few seconds, trying to get as much water out of my hair as I could.
"I um, I put a towel in the dryer so you wouldn't be cold when you got out."
I smiled at the gesture. Robert really was a sweet guy. I feel bad for making him wait for a relationship..
I stuck out my hand for the towel and quickly wrapped it around my body, taking in the warmth.
"You're the best," I stepped out of the shower before he could leave the bathroom. He stared at me for a while, looking me up and down. I bit my lip, not sure what to say
"Oh I'm sorry. I'll leave," Rob quietly told me. He was embarrassed that I caught him staring. I waited until the towel had cooled before I started to get dressed.
I walked into the den to find Robert on the couch. I sat down next to him and he draped his arm around my shoulders. He was watching a rerun of Criminal Minds.
"What do you want to eat?"
"What do you want to make? Or do you want to order in?" He finally turned his attention to me, "It's up to you."
"I would like steak."
"We could go out to get steak or I can make it," He offered, "We hardly ever use the grill."
"Yeah because I'm definitely dressed for a steak house."
"Then we'll save that for another night," Robert kissed my cheek and got up, "Are you coming with me or what?"
I sat on the back porch while Rob made our dinner. When he was almost finished, I went back in the kitchen to mix the salad and grab the drinks. I had left my phone in my bag by the door, I could hear it ring from the other room.
"Where's your roommate?" I asked between bites of food.
"Beau? He's probably with some of the guys."
"Why didn't you go with them?"
"I wanted to see you," he shrugged, like it was no big deal.
"You always see me."
"But soon, you'll be in school and I'll have hockey. Then I'll be spending way too much time with them and not enough with you. Why did you quit dancing?"
"Shit happens, I told you."
He let me finish eating before he started to ask anymore questions. He was rinsing off a dish when he brought it up again.
"What happened that made you quit dancing?"
I took a deep breath and tried not to yell, "You know what happened? My best friend was in the hospital more often than not. I'd get up, go to school, and then go to the hospital until her parents told me I should go home. You're only allowed to miss 3 practices so once I had missed a weeks worth, my dance teacher said I had to go or I'd be choreographed out of the dances. I wasn't going to leave Tori alone. I mean it's not like she didn't have other friends, but they were all in dance with us. I was the only one who didn't care about my spot on the competition team. There was a lot of politics behind it."
He stared at me. I couldn't tell what he was thinking, but he looked shocked.
"You gonna say anything or what?"
"I guess I don't really know what to say."
"Not many people do," I went back to helping him clean up.
Once we were finished, we went back to watching Criminal Minds. The sun was starting to go down and I had an idea of something fun to do.
"Wanna go look at the stars? Like out in the country somewhere..."
"You have class tomorrow and I have to get up for practice, maybe some other time."
I sighed and tried brushing it off. It was The middle of September and this wasn't something we could go do for much longer. I stuck around for another episode before getting up and gathering my things.
"I'm gonna head home," I said quietly from the doorway.
"I thought you were going to stay the night."
"Yeah, but I'm going to do some laundry and hopefully work things out with my roommates. Are we still on for lunch tomorrow?"
"Yeah of course. I'll pick you up at 12:30."
"See you then."
The three girls I live with didn't seem to move much since I last saw them, they just had gotten their books.
"Hey Scar," Taylor was the first to greet me, "We're sorry about earlier. We're glad you found someone like him."
"Yeah well you'll be seeing more of me," I mumbled and grabbed a few popsicles out of the freezer.
"Why? What happened?" Rachel looked concerned.
"Nothing. Season starts soon and I have class when he has free time. If any of you need me, I'm going to go watch Supernatural until I fall asleep."
I finished my popsicles and fell asleep. At around 10, my phone started ringing.
"Why are you calling at this hour?"
"If I come over can we take your truck out?"
"Rob I'm already in bed.."
"I just feel bad for saying no, Scar. I'll drive."
"Fine. I'll grab the blankets," I hung up the phone and grabbed every tie blanket I owned and a few pillows.
"Where are you going?"
"Apparently I'm going to look at the stars. I don't know when I'll be back," I walked outside and met Rob at my truck. I tossed him the keys and he drove for almost an hour to get away from the light pollution.
We sat in the bed of my truck without talking. I was pissed at him for saying no in the first place and now it's even later.
"Dating a pro hockey player sucks," I didn't realize what I said until I saw his reaction.
"What?"
"Oh. Uh.. Sorry. I didn't mean. I want to but I just don't know yet. I know you're not going to be around very often come October and I don't know if I want to date someone that is never here. I like being able to share a bed with someone."
"You mean attach yourself to them and not let go until you wake up?" He smirked and brushed a piece of hair back behind my ear. I mumbled an apology and wrapped my legs around his, "You're like my own little space heater. I love it."
