Sure Feels Right
Chapter Nine
Even though my house was in the same neighborhood as Robert's, I was there more than I was home. Lately, we'd get done with practice or school and one of us would cook before relaxing and doing homework for the night.
Taking 18 credits was something I had done before, but something made it worse this semester. Trying to juggle a relationship, friendships, work, and school wasn't easy. It was actually starting to be too much.
I sat at Robert's kitchen table trying to finish homework that I didn't understand. After around 20 minutes of being stuck, I broke down. I pulled my legs to my chest and hurried my face. I usually don't cry in front of people, but I didn't expect him to walk in when he did.
"Scar, what's wrong?" He pulled out a chair and sat next to me. Saying he was worried is an understatement.
"I can't handle this. It's all too much," I sobbed, refusing to meet his eyes.
"Then take a break," he suggested, "Go to sleep and finish the homework in the morning."
"I can't."
"Okay, then let's go do something tonight. I will stay up with you and help once we get back, but you need a break," he looked at me with pleading eyes. The clock on the mircrowave said 11:38, but my body was trying to convince me it was after 2 in the morning.
"What are we going to do?"
"Drive around. Get shitty gas station coffee. Whatever you feel like doing."
Good enough for me. I really just needed a break. I slipped on my winter jacket and put on my uggs, sweats half hanging out of the top of them. As soon as I got in the car, I started the seat warmers. That was the best part of Robert driving instead of me. My truck was shit during the winter, but somehow I still made it around.
He pulled out of the driveway and started driving without knowing where we were going. I started flipping through the radio stations, tying to find a song I wasn't tired of hearing already when I gave up and connected my phone to bluetooth.
"Merrily we fall out of line, out of line, I'd fall anywhere with you I'm by your side," I quietly sang along with the song that filled Robert's car, "I'm not afraid anymore, I'm not afraid. Forever is a long time but I, wouldn't mind spending it by your side."
This had been one of my favorite songs in high school, but only now does it have some meaning in my life. Except I am afraid. I'm scared shitless to be real honest. But isn't there a saying, something along the lines of "If it doesn't scare you, its not real love"? I'm probably just making that up.
"Can we go for a walk in the park?" It was late, but I didn't really care.
"Its cold out."
I gasped, "And you call yourself a Canadian."
"Fine, but don't complain to me when you get cold."
"If you don't keep me warm, you aren't doing your job."
Once we got back to his place, I tried doing my homework once more before deciding my best bet would be to just go to my professor's office hours before class.
"I love sleeping with you," Robert mumbled as he pulled me closer to him.
I laughed, "You're not such a bad lay yourself babe."
"That's not what I meant."
"I know, I just thought I was funny."
"You're hilarious Scar, now go to bed. I don't want to deal with your crabby ass tomorrow."
"You'd rather deal with just my ass?"
"Yep."
"You are a piece of work."
"Shhh," his hand covered my face, "It's Scarlett's bedtime."
The next day was interesting, to say the least. My class was cancelled, as were my professors office hours. I would've gone home and slept all day, but Beau was having a minor breakdown the day his girlfriend was returning from California and Robert needed a lot of help.
"Drew wants to have a baby," Beau ran his hands through his hair. It was obvious the kid didn't know what to do.
"Yeah. I know," Robert sighed, "You've been freaking out about this for a while."
"Why would she want to have a baby with me? Like we're not even 25," He got up from his chair and started pacing around the living room. There was a slight breeze because of him.
"Maybe it's because she trusts you and wants marry you. Although I'm not sure why she would want to.."
"Can you tell your girlfriend not to use her psychology degree on me," Beau looked at Robert, not too pleased with what I had just told him.
"I was speaking purely from experience of being a girl. Take it as a compliment. She loves you and wants to have your children."
"Weren't you all for the whole children thing? I'm pretty sure you told me that after the two of you babysat the Kunitz children and after that night at your parents house.." Robert added.
"I was. I am," he corrected himself, "I just, she lives in California. She has her dream job. I don't want to make her move across the country if she's happy over there."
"Well I hate to break it to ya, but you need to grow the fuck up before you have a child. Stop flirting with the other girls. It just makes you look like a tool," I told him. He didn't seem to appreciate my honesty.
"I stopped doing that," he growled.
"Was that before or after your teammate punched you?" I challenged.
"Wait," Robert took a break from him roommate and turned to me, "if you're speaking from experience, whose children do you want?"
"Didn't you know? I'm madly in love with Geno and want to have his children," I shrugged, taking another sip of tea.
"Oh good. I'll be sure to tell him," Robert said. Beau looked at the two of us like we had six heads.
"Actually I can tell him. In his native language."
"Hello, my girlfriend wants to have children," he huffed, "That's a little more important."
"Dude, my girlfriend is going to run away with the Russian. You're lucky." Robert's joke just made Beau more upset.
"I hate you both," Beau mumbled.
"I'm sorry Beau, but what do you want me to do?" I asked him, "I told you what I thought and you got mad because I was apparently using my psych degree on you."
"Well, what would you do?" He asked Robert.
"What would I do? If Scarlett wanted children?" Beau nodded his head, hoping his roommate would say something useful, "I'd probably tell her we need to spend all our free time trying."
"He would too," I tried not blushing, but I couldn't help my cheeks getting slightly red.
"Quit," Beau whined.
"Yeah because whenever you and Drew see each other, you don't constantly have sex."
"That's different. We live on opposite sides of the country," Beau started pulling at his hair. The poor kid was going to lose his Cali blonde hair if he kept it up.
"Okay, I'm being serious now. If Scarlett wanted children, we would sit down and have a serious conversation on whether or not its a good idea right now with the current situation and decide if and how long we should wait."
"Beau, just tell her how you feel about the whole situation. From what I've heard, the soccer team here needs another trainer. If she wants to be with you, she'll make sacrifices. Just calm down," I tried making him feel a little at ease, but he was still pretty tense.
"Right. Well I have to go pick her up soon," Beau slipped on his jacket and grabbed his keys without saying another word.
"You don't want children, do you?" Rob turned to look at me.
"I'd like to at least make it through my undergrad fetus-free. Preferably grad school too, but who knows what'll happen," I got up to pour more hot water in my mug, "Do you want children?"
"I want you to have a ring before we have children."
"Fair enough, so what are the Christmas plans?"
"I figured I could make dinner and we could go look at lights or stay in and watch movies. I wasn't planning anything too big, unless that's what you want."
"No, that sounds great." I still had no idea what I was gonna get him for Christmas, but I had two weeks to figure it out.
"I'm kinda hungry," he told me as he took the mug from my hand and set itit on the counter next to me.
"Make yourself some food. I already ate," he raised an eyebrow, apparently he wasn't having my innocence this morning. "OH. That's what you meant. Yeah that sounds great but-"
"I'll make it fast."
"That's a lie and you know it. You would go painstakingly slow but I can't."
"Why," He strung out the word like a little kid that wasn't getting his way. He had the pouting face and everything. I simply pulled a tampon out of the pocket of my oversized sweater to make him stop, "That sucks." He mumbled.
"You're telling me. My uterus is falling out," I tolled my eyes and picked up the mug sitting next to me, "You're acting like its the end of the world that you aren't getting laid."
"That's actually not what I had in mind.."
"Yeah but we all know where that leads.." He rolled his eyes and left me alone in the kitchen.
"Wait," I called out, "Does this mean I'm meeting Drew today?"
"Yeah, unless you don't want to. She's a sweet girl, wouldn't hurt a fly. I think you'll like her."
Somehow that didn't make me feel better. I don't know why I was nervous. From what I've heard from Beau, she's one of the nicest people that has worked for the Penguins organization. Always wanted to help everyone.
Drew's POV
I touched down in Pittsburgh right around noon. I told Beau I landed at 11:45 so he would hopefully be here on time. It was only about a month and a half since I had been here, but it seemed like an eternity.
I met Beau at baggage claim. He met me with open arms and I didn't want to leave his embrace.
"Come on, let's get your stuff and head to my place. Rob's girlfriend wants to meet you."
"What's she like?" I asked. For some reason, meeting other girlfriends was scary. Even though I've heard nothing but good things from Brandon, I still was uneasy about the whole situation.
"She's sarcastic and witty. They're perfect for each other, in all honesty. Scarlett has a good heart though. She puts the brutal in brutally honest, so watch out for that. Oh and she broke her wrist by dancing on the table while she was drunk."
We walked into Beau and Robert's place to see Robert carrying his girlfriend around over his shoulder.
"Let me down," she shrieked and started hitting his back. Beau cleared his throat and Robert turned around, girl still on his shoulder.
"Hey Drew," he smiled.
"I'm Scarlett," she waved and lifted her light brown hair out of her face, "Seriously. Let me down."
He dropped her on the couch, making sure she landed on the right side of her body. That's when I saw the bright orange cast still on her arm. She stood a few inches taller than me, but still looked tiny next to Robert. She was average looking, but pretty enough to make the fangirls jealous of her dating Robert.
Just like me.
"I'm sorry about that," she stuck her hand out for me to shake, "I've heard a lot about you."
"Yeah, its nice to finally meet you," I matched her friendly tone, "I heard you've been giving Beau a hard time."
"Yeah well someone has to keep him in his place."
Robert's face lit up every time he looked at Scarlett. I could tell he was happy with her, which he deserved. The poor kid lives with Beau.
"We were just going to lunch, do you want to come?" She offered and I looked to Beau to see if he had different plans.
"Yeah, of course," he told them.
"Sweet, buffalo wild wings good? I'll drive."
Scarlett's POV
We all piled into the truck and were off. Drew seemed like a fun person to be around. She was quiet, but it felt like something was off. Maybe that's just the way she is. I guess I wouldn't know.
"Good Lord, your driving is horrendous," I could see Beau rubbing his temples in my rear view mirror. I rolled my eyes and turned the music up louder, hoping to drown out his complaints.
"I knew the first time should've been the last time I ever let the whiskey touch my lips, cause the devil wears black and he goes by Jack and he's really good at helping me forget," I sang out loud, just to annoy Beau.
"Did he push you off the table that night too?" Before I could reply, his girlfriend was singing along, just as loud as I was. As soon as I parked, I turned around to look at her.
"I like you. You would be fun to get drunk with."
She gave a nervous laugh, "Yeah. We'll definitely have to do that some time."
Something is definitely up.
While we were waiting for the food, we mainly talked about Drew's job in California. She could probably go in for days about how much she loves it. Beau seemed to have calmed down since our talk this morning. It was obvious the kid is head over heels in love with her. I'm glad he finally got his shit together. She deserves someone who isn't distracted by blonde hair and big boobs.
Thanks do much for the link. Beautiful gown. She's being quite the B**h about everything. So he made the wrong choice. Grow up. Not sure if want to be around her either.
