Don't Tell Me
Chapter Eight
"Hey dad, where's the tent?" I searched through the storage room, not finding anything that I needed.
"I think it's in the garage. Why do you need it?" He yelled down the hall.
"Sister bonding time in the mountains."
"So you're all gonna get drunk and roast some marshmallows?"
"Pretty much. No one is bringing letters, no one has to worry." I ran out to the garage to grab everything I needed and threw it in the backseat of the truck. I went back up to my room and packed a duffel bag full of clothes I might need for the weekend. My sisters wouldn't be here for a while so I took that opportunity to dance alone in my room. Thirty second dance parties help a lot.
"Gabriel, what's up?" I answered my phone and took a break from the jam session in my room.
"Are you going to get pissed if I talk about you and Matt?"
"No." Probably. "Why?"
"Because he's freaking out and worried that he messed things up with you."
Okay, I would have appreciated if he said something other than, "Oh." Before leaving me to cry in my room after I told him I was falling for him. The worst part was there is no recovering from this fall. Either he was going to catch me or I'd be messed up for a while.
"I'm pissed, yeah. He just has to do some ass kissing before I want to see him again. He would have to do a lot more to ruin things."
"Well, obviously. You're still dating that one kid after you caught him cheating."
"Landy," I whined. I wish people would just drop it already. I'm fine with dating Aaron for now. It's not like I would immediately go to Matt after it was over.
"I'm just saying."
"I'm just saying that if I break up with-"
"When, Maggie. When."
"Alright. When I break up with Aaron, I'm probably just going to push Matt away because some guys only want what they can't have and what if he doesn't want me when I'm single."
"He will, trust me. You're all he talks about." I felt my cheeks warm up.
"No, I think he'll get to know me and want to leave. Or cheat. Apparently guys are into that now. Especially ones that are good at whatever they do."
"Matt stays faithful. Unlike someone.."
"Well Gabe, this has been a great chat. I have to go finish packing. I'm sure I'll see you soon."
"Bye Margaret."
Okay so I didn't get pissed, but I wasn't exactly happy with the situation I had to deal with.
"Maggie Sue, where are you?" I heard someone yell down the hallway.
"Sarah!" I ran out my door to hug her.
"How's my favorite little?"
"I'm great. How is your internship at the equine center?"
"It's good. I love it there, they've been talking about giving me a job after I graduate next year."
"Sarah that's great!"
"Yeah, sure. Tell me about your summer though!"
"I will once we get to the campsite." I grabbed my pillow, duffel bag, and rain coat. "Do you want anything before we leave?"
"No I don't think so." My phone started ringing, but it was the song I had set for Aaron so I let it keep playing.
"Aren't you gonna get that?" Sarah followed me out of my room and down the hall.
"No, I'll call them back later."
Aaron has been trying to talk to me for two days straight, but honestly I haven't wanted to talk to anyone since I poured my heart out to Matt and all he could say to me was, 'Oh.' Since then I've gone to work and sleep, for the most part.
"Hey dad I'm leaving. I should have cell service, if not I'll be home on Friday before work. Love you!"
"Be safe ladies."
"We will!"
I tossed the rest of my stuff in the back seat and we were on our way to the mountains. Sarah and a few other girls had already been camping, so they had tents and what not set up already. Aaron called three times on my way there. Matt called too and as much as I wanted to answer, I ignored it.
"Hi mom."
"I just want to remind you of the Avalanche fundraiser on Saturday."
"Right. I work until 5 so I'll get there as soon as I can."
"Remember it's formal too." Fuck. I don't know where my dress is.
"Alright. I'll see what I can do. I'm going to lose service here soon. I'll talk to you when I get back from camping."
"But Maggie-" I hung up, not really caring what she had to say about the dinner. It was some stupid off season fundraiser or something for the team. My mom was trying way too hard to get me and Matt together. Everyone was and it was starting to get annoying.
"Margaret Benson, how are you?" One of my sisters yelled as I got out of my truck.
"I'm doing good. Boys are stupid, but hey. What's new with that?" I grabbed a beer out of the cooler and sat down in an open chair. "How's everything with you?"
We all caught up on each others lives. Which mean to explain to everyone the whole situation between Matt and Aaron.
"So are you going to break up with him?"
"Yes. I think so. I mean, when I kissed Matt, I felt something. And it's never been like that with Aaron. Like have you ever craved someone's touch? And I feel like an idiot for already being in too deep."
"Wait, this is Matt Douchene you're talking about, right?"
"Yeah."
"Olympic gold medalist. One of the best players on the AVs. The one who has a gorgous body and amazing eyes? You are crazy for not wanting to be with him." Mariah told me. She has definitely been drinking since she woke up.
"No. I want to be with him, more than anything. I just don't know how to leave Aaron. "
"Can we talk about something else? This isn't fun," Carrie slurred. We were all a little past wasted at this point and probably wouldn't have a sober moment until we leave.
Joining a sorority was the best decision I have made in college. I might be biased here, but a professional sorority was so much better than a social one. All these girls are laid back. That might also be the fact that it's because they're all farm and ranch kids. We all came from different places, but it's nice to know that there are many like us.
I barely made it home in time to shower and grab what I needed for the weekend at my mom's then speed to work. Luckily, I was stuck in the back most of my shift, unloading and what no so that I didn't actually have to deal with customers today. I was far too hungover to do that.
My manager let me leave 5 minutes early because I was on the verge of tears about my hair. Always working hard pays off. I braided my hair as fast as I could and changed into the dress I was going to wear. I didn't realize I forgot my heels in the car.
"Muddy boots it is," I said to myself as I walked through the break room door with a fancy dress and shoes that I should probably replace sometime soon.
"Cute outfit," Joe laughed as I slipped past him.
"Bite me."
Thankfully, I only got there a half an hour after my mom wanted me to. I walked in trying not to kill myself in the heels that I have only for sorority functions. Patrick came out to get me since I didn't actually have a ticket. The first thing I saw was Matt talking to some really attractive girl.
"Maggie! Come here, I want you to meet someone." He smiled, motioning for me to join him and the girl. "This is my cousin, Katie."
"Maggie, I've heard so much about you already!" I nervously laughed, shaking her hand. This was weird, but I'm glad it was just his cousin.
"Oh good." I mumbled.
"I'm going to let you two catch up."
Matt started to say something, but I interrupted, "I'm breaking up with him." He stared at me, completely taken aback by that. I don't know why. Everyone should have seen this coming. "I swear to God, if you don't say anything other than 'Oh' I will hook up with one of your teammates instead."
"No need for that," He laughed, "I don't want to influence your decision, but I do think you deserve better."
"Right now, I feel like I deserve James Marsden."
"Well, you do look stunning, as always."
"Yeah, yeah I know. You should buy me a drink."
"Yes ma'am." He left me alone, only for Nate to come over and pick me up.
"Dammit MacKinnon. I'm trying to be a lady and you're making that real hard." The hockey players in front of me gave me funny looks, as if I wasn't being serious.
"Since when are you a lady?" Gabe asked, still laughing.
"Since I put on heels and a nice dress for this."
"Lady's don't fall out of truck beds completely wasted." Ryan added.
"Hey, I'm pretty sure Clint pushed me. I really do have to go find my mom so I'll talk to you guys later."
I had to wander around for a while until I found her and Patrick. They seemed to be talking to someone important, so I stood a few feet back until they were done.
"I didn't know what you wanted, so I figured you can't go wrong with beer." He handed me over a bottle of Bud Light.
"Well you're right."
"You know you can go up and talk to them, right? That's only the GM."
I shrugged, not really caring to break up their conversation, "Yeah. I can talk to them later. I am staying at her apartment."
"What if you stayed at mine?" I sighed. I wanted to, but I unfortunately still had a boyfriend.
"Maybe next time."
"Come on, I'm going to introduce you to the general manager." I grabbed my hand and lead me over there. When there was a pause in the conversation, he started talking. "Mr. Sherman, this is Mrs. Benson's daughter, Maggie."
He shook my hand and started asking me about college and the such. "So are you two?"
"No." Matt said.
"Not yet." I told him, smiling. My mom gave me a 'we will be talking about this later' look and that's when I decided it was probably best to find someone else to talk to.
Aaron kept calling and I kept hitting ignore, but Matt eventually spoke up about my vibrating pocket.
"You can answer that you know, no one really cares."
"You're assuming that I want to talk to him, which I don't. He's probably off screwing that girl again. Which is why I'm done with him." I finished my beer and tossed it in the bin. I looked up at him, studying his face for a moment. "Have I ever told you that you have gorgeous eyes?"
There's a lot of other things I wanted to tell him, but they weren't exactly appropriate.
