She's Only 17.
When's the Baby Gonna Sleep?
A month whizzed by, now it's the first game of the season. Rylee is nervous. For Jamie, for Tyler, for the whole team actually, because she knows how pivotal this season is for everyone. She has met a few players, through her dad. What was irritating was that every time she was introduced, the player’s eyebrow would raise. Rylee frequently cursed Jamie’s name in the instances. The ball was almost dropped when Roussel, the idiot, had said “Ooh, so this is Rylee. Makes sense..okay.” Luckily Jordie stepped in and explained to Joe that those crazy Frenchmen make “shit..uh..crap up all the time”.
It’s just now 8 in the morning. Rylee talked her dad into letting her skip school today due to her excitement over the impending season opener, which isn’t entirely untrue. Rylee texts Jamie: HEY THE STARS HOME OPENER IS TONIGHT, WANNA GO? Jamie: WOULD LOVE TO, BUT I’VE GOT TO WORK. She can’t take it anymore, she dials his number and Jamie picks up on the first ring. “Was I not clear enough in my text?” He laughs. Rylee smiles from ear to ear, she would never get over that laugh.
“Yeah, but I was thinking since you are being a party pooper..what are you doing right now?”
“Right now? In bed, just woke up, you?” A mental image of Jamie in bed flashes into Rylee’s mind. Not what friends do, Ryles.
“I was thinking I would meet my really good friend for brunch since he has to work tonight and I won’t get a chance to see him until late?”
“Sounds like a plan. Pick you up around 10:30?”
“See you then.”
Rylee has a spaz attack and throws herself back into her own bed. She buries her face into a pillow and screams into it. This is what happens inside of her every time she even talks to Jamie.
“Was that who I think it was?” Jordie pokes his head into Jamie’s room. “Yeah..damn I can’t stop thinking about how much I want her. It makes seeing her so much harder.” “But haven’t both of you been doing better about the whole PDA thing?” Jordie pushes his way into the room and sits on Jamie’s bed. “Yep, we haven’t kissed since the day we left for training camp.” Jordie laughs. “You should’ve seen the look on your face when you said that.” Jamie kicked him and then sat up. “I’m gonna call Seggy. Ask him if we can do something at his place after the game tonight.” “Have a friendly gathering? Yeah, sounds like a good Friday night plan.” Jordie always tries to remind Jamie of the boundaries he has to have with Rylee. Jamie is appreciative of it, but it can get irritating. “Yeah, right,” Jamie stands, grabs his phone, and heads for the living room.
When Tyler sees its Jamie, he practically knows what he’s going to be asked before he picks up the phone. “How are you feeling, man?” Tyler plops down on his couch, Marshall and Cash sit at his feet staring. “I’m good, everything’s good. Hey..so do you have plans after the game tonight?” Tyler could hear the red creeping up Jamie’s face.
“Not particularly. Why?”
“Well, I..dammit you really are going to make me ask. I want to see her after the game.”
“Who?”
“Fuck you, Segs, you know who.” Jamie snaps.
Tyler bursts into laughter, “Chill out, bro, I’ll see what I can do.”
“Thanks.” Jamie’s voice is softer, quiet. The hope of seeing the person Tyler knows he holds so dear is renewed. “Sure,” Tyler clears his throat. “So I’ll talk to you later and I’ll text Ry details.” He hangs up and paces for a minute. Then Tyler knows what to do. He dials a number that is only drawn for special occasions.
“Hey, Johnny, it’s Tyler Seguin. Yeah..what’s up?..I have a favor to ask..”
Rylee walks out of her house in jeans with holes in the knees and a dark green tank top. A bonus to fall in Texas: you can still get away with tank tops. Her sandals clack against the pavement as she makes her way to Jamie’s truck. “Hey,” she smiles as he stands, holding the passenger door open for her. “Hi,” there is the perpetual red that seems to be on Jamie’s face when Rylee is around. She finds it endearing.
They talk about everything. That’s the great thing about their relationship. Rylee doesn’t even feel weird talking about school, Jamie just makes it normal. He talks about practice yesterday, how he almost shitted himself when he remembered that the first game is today. She laughs when Jamie tells her about how Jordie slipped and busted his ass on the hardwood floor in the apartment because Jamie squirted some on the floor doing dishes.
Brunch turns into a meal plus wandering around the busy downtown street for two hours.
Jamie looks at his watch and realizes what time it is, “Damn, we need to get going.” Rylee’s face fell a little. “I’m nervous for tonight. I’m nervous for you..and Tyler.” “I am too.” Jamie always gets quiet when he is nervous, Rylee is learning this. “You better score for me.” Jamie smiles warmly at her. “I’ll try.”
They get back to Rylee’s house. Rylee lingers in Jamie’s truck. She wants to kiss him so bad, but knows she shouldn’t. She starts to get out when Jamie says “Ry.” Rylee turns and Jamie places a tender kiss on her forehead. “Thanks.” Rylee squeezes his hand, “Of course.”
