Because of Him

Chapter 3

“So, how was James?” Veronique asks me, popping up out of nowhere.
“He was busy.” I said shrugging.
“Well, he just moved here so im sure he is really busy.” She says sympathically.
“Yeah. I guess he is.” I smile.
“When did you move here?” Veronique asks.
“3 weeks ago.” I reply as we walk down the never-ending hall of the Consol Energy Centre.
“From where?”
“LA.” I reply.
“You don’t seem like one of those snobby LA girls.” She says.
“No. I’m not snobby at all. Trust me.” I reply back smiling.
“Didn’t think you were.”
We walk further until we are outside the locker room. Veronique opens the door and points to a man sitting in goalie gear.
“That’s my boyfriend.” She smiles wiggling her eyebrows.
I turn and look at her surprised.
“His in the NHL?”
“Well, yes.” She laughs. “I moved her from Montreal when he got drafted. Have been dating since we were 15.” She giggles.
“That’s amazing.” I remark.
“Yeah, his alright.”
“Evelyn! That’s where you wondered off too!” My father says grabbing my arm from inside the locker room.
“Always wondering off this girl.” He says smiling to Mario.
I gulp and force a smile.
“I want you to meet some of the team Evelyn.” My father instructs, opening the door wide and letting me in.
“Nice to meet you all.” I say, smiling and waving my hand. My eyes scan the room looking for those big blue eyes. When they lock, neither of us move our glances.
“Evelyn.” My father repeats himself.
“Yes daddy.” I smile.
“We have to get going. Say goodbye.”
“Bye.” I wave again. I walk out the door, but Veronique stops me.
“Phone.” She says extending her hand. I take the phone out and give it to her. She adds her number and says she will text me tonight and we will go for coffee. Well at least if James can’t do coffee then she can I sigh.
My father and I get into one of his many expensive cars. We have dinner as a family as usual, and as usual there is little conversation. Maybe because I never do anything exciting, or maybe because my parents are never bothered to ask. Either way, I don’t mind. Its something I have become accustomed to.
After dinner, I shower and go to bed. Again, I lay up for ours, slowly tosses and turning every few minutes. I take a deep breath sighing. Maybe James wasn’t interested in me.

Then again, who ever was?

“I am more then happy to have coffee with you every single day. Things are so boring when Marc is training.” Veronique smiles.
“Well, I am more then glad to accompany you on these coffee dates.” I smile back.
The conversations go back and forth. Between my time in LA to Veronique’s time in Montreal.
“You know, James doesn’t have a girlfriend.” Veronique laughs with a smirk.
“Oh really?” I smile twirling the straw in my milkshake around with my finger.
“Then how come he practically refused to come to coffee with me then?” I ask.
Veronique’s eyes widen and her mouth forms an O shape.
“He didn’t?” She says.
I don’t reply, just shrug my shoulders.
“He did! Oh my gosh.” She exclaims.
“It was nothing important. It was just an offer to get some coffee. I guess he doesn’t like coffee.” I laugh.
Veronique giggles at my statement.
“Maybe your father has him on a very strict diet.” She says sarcastically.
“I wouldn’t be surprised.” I say bluntly rolling my eyes.
“Not a daddys girl?” She asks.
I take another sip of my milkshake, avoiding the topic. Veronique doesn’t speak though, as she waits for my reply.
“It’s complicated.” I shrug.
“Why is everything always complicated?” She says.
“If I knew, then I would have no worries in the world.” I smile causing her to laugh.
“Your really funny-“
“For a rich girl?” I finish her sentence.
“Not exactly in those words, but something like that.” She smiles.
“Im not a rich girl. My parents are the rich ones.” I say.
“Then what does that make you?” She asks.
I pause. I didn’t really ever know what that made me. I wasn’t like them. I didn’t want to be like them. I loved them, I truly did. I just didn’t want to be the same people as them.
“There daughter who wants to have her own life.” I sigh.
“Then, who is a better person to help you start that life?” She smiles.
“I think im looking at her?” I ask.
“Oh, I think you are too.”
