девятка! Devyatka! (I Want It!)

The Dallas Stars were playing the last game before the Winter Break. Christmas was the next day and Tyler Seguin, Jamie Benn and I, Valeri Nichushkin were all hanging out as a family to celebrate it together. We were shaping up to be a pretty incredible first line...if not the best first line in the NHL.

We were fast and deadly. But we were backed by a good team. All the drama that had happened between Dallas and Boston was gone and it was time to end the Break with a bang.

Oh, and the NHL loved to make its stars make fools of themselves in these bloopers/behind the scenes videos. It was Dallas’ turn. I was still struggling with English when they had recorded the video and I knew people would love it and whatnot, but hey, it was me.

I was stuck with Jamie and Tyler, trying to wish people “Merry Christmas” but the pressure of being on the camera and the distraction of my mind was too much. I was just caught grinning the whole time. We were wearing Christmas/Santa hats and had a red scarf material draped around our shoulders. The way we were sitting mirrored our line look. It took plenty of takes, but we eventually got it. But it was nice and funny.

One of the people in charge, a woman, leaned over the camera and looked at Tyler, who was trying to figure out what to say. “Hi, I’m Tyler Seguin.”

Jamie leaned over to me, “Hey, you gonna say ‘Hi, I’m Val Nichushkin?’”

Tyler had ahold of the microphone and he moved it from Jamie to me.

“Hi, I’m Val Nichushkin,” I said, looking around, bewildered, as everyone laughed, including Tyler and Jamie.

“I thought it was Val? Wal?” Tyler looked at me, curiously.

“What?” Jamie and I questioned.

Tyler turned back to the camera and was doing something equal to jiggling the mic in his hand. He mouthed “I have no idea.”

“Val! It’s Val!” Jamie stated, after the camera cut off.

“Oh, right. My bad.” Tyler shrugged.

“Stop messing up Segs!” Jamie chuckled, shaking his head and stroking the end of the red scarf.

“Hi, I’m Val Nichushkin!” I stated, glancing around again with a lost puppy dog look. What was so funny?

“You sure?” Tyler questioned, laughing.

There was more laughter, as Jamie lost it too. It took some time to get control once more and Jamie had to keep telling himself, “dead puppies.” But Tyler didn’t like that at all, so he punched Jamie in the shoulder and that made him behave. I watched them, unable to stop from smiling. I stroked the end of the red scarf with my hand, out of nervousness.

After ten minutes of giggles and trying to get ready once more, we finally did. Tyler clutched the mic in his hand and was in charge, given that he was in the middle. He held it up as the woman behind the camera called action once more.

“Hi, I’m Tyler Seguin…”

He tilted the mic over to Jamie. “And I’m Jamie Benn.”

He put it back up to his mouth. “We want to mish you a Merry Christmas…”

It was titled back to Jamie. “And a happy holidays.”

Then the mic was tilted to me. “Hi, I’m Val Nichushkin! С Новым Годом! (Happy New Year!)”

Instantly, Jamie burst out with laughter and stumbled to the side, off camera. Tyler bent forward, chuckling. I wasn’t sure, but the excitement and good humor was infectious, so I smiled sweetly and cluelessly.

Another fifteen minutes later, Tyler clutched the mic in his hand once more and was still in charge, given that he still sat in the middle. He held it up as the woman behind the camera called action yet again for the tenth take or so. It was alot that was for sure.

“Hi, I’m Tyler Seguin…”

He tilted the mic over to Jamie. “And I’m Jamie Benn.”

He put it back up to his mouth. “We want to wish you a Merry Christmas…” (He emphasized the “w” in “wish.”)

It was titled back to Jamie. “And a happy holidays.”

Then the mic was tilted to me. “Hi, I’m Val Nichushkin! С Новым Годом! (Happy New Year!)” I kept my grin going, looking toward Tyler.

There was a pause, before Tyler said, “That’s it.”

He jiggled the mic in his hand again, smiling that big cheesy grin of his. The one that was for the media and classic Tyler Seguin. Jamie smiled as well, as did I. I couldn’t break the smile. I’d been smiling the whole time. Smiling was my favorite. (Cause he’s like Buddy the Elf!)

I reached up and removed my santa hat, as Tyler turned to me and held up his fist. I fist bumped him, as he exclaimed, “Atta boy!”

“Perfect, that’s a wrap,” a man behind the camera said.

I stood up from my spot and walked over to where my stuff was. I had brought Klyushka with me and I’d leaned it against the wall. I grabbed my hockey stick from my stuff and hugged it. Jamie and Tyler came up to me and hugged me. “Why were you two laughing at me?” I asked, as I gripped Klyushka in my hands.

“You did good. You’re perfect. It was just funny,” Tyler explained. Jamie nodded beside him.

“Okay,” I replied in a thick Russian accent.

And with that, we all huddled together and hung out, wasting time until practice began. It was a good time and a good feeling to know that the three of us could overcome anything. And it was nice to know that Tyler was okay and that Jamie didn’t have to murder anyone on the ice because of it.

The three of us continued to light lamps all through the 2013-2014 season.

Do I want the Cup? Who doesn’t? Yes...Devyatka! I want it!
