02: Could It Be

"Could it be the end of just friends, and the start of something more..."

Jamie and Jordie’s house was spectacular. Definitely nicer than any of the houses Cassidy ever grew up around. Everything was decorated modernly yet still had a homey feel to it. But it was definitely a bachelor pad, made obvious by the game room, which contained a massive selection of video games as well as a pool table.

Tyler sat down on the couch in the living room and pulled Cassidy into his lap. She immediately bit her lip nervously as she felt the bulge beneath his jeans, and she rattled her brain for any topic of conversation.

“So do you live here with Jordie and Jamie?” She shook her head slightly at her ridiculous question. Like it even mattered.

Tyler smirked and brought his hand down to her thigh, tucking his fingertips beneath the bottom of her dress and slowly worked them up her leg. “No, I have my own place. We can go there if you want.”

Cassidy shook her head immediately, offering a small smile with the gesture. Tyler leaned in and cupped the side of her neck with his other hand as he kissed her slowly. As his hand continued to move up towards her core, Tyler changed his position so that Cassidy lay against the couch with him on top of her.

She bit his lip absently; still nervous with where this was going. When Tyler’s hand finally made contact with her lacy thong, she gripped onto his tattooed arms, taking a sharp breath in.

“Not on the couch Ty! It’s new, the last thing I want on it are your cum stains.” Jamie tossed a pillow at Tyler’s head.

Tyler sat back on his knees, pulling his hands away from Cassidy, and she sat up as well, thankful for the interruption. But it didn’t last long as he tugged on her hands and led her upstairs into a bedroom she assumed was his for the night.

Cassidy came tiptoeing down the stairs, carrying her shoes in her hand as she walked into the kitchen, looking at her cell phone to call Kennedy. When she looked up, she stepped back as she saw Jamie staring at her.

“Sorry, I didn’t think anyone was up,” she murmured, setting her shoes down on the floor.

“Between you and Tyler doing God knows what, and hearing my brother and some girl go at it, it’s kind of hard to sleep.”

“Jordie’s your brother,” she asked disregarding everything else Jamie had said. When he chuckled and nodded, she continued. “Tyler and I didn’t do anything.”

Jamie shot her a quick glance and set his phone down on the counter, “why not?”

“Do you want me to list out the reasons?”

“You have a list?”

“I’m kind of awkward,” she began. “Among other things.”

“You mean you’re a virgin. You didn’t want your first time to be with some random guy from a bar. That’s your only real reason.”

Cassidy bit her lip and looked down at the counter, dragging her fingers over it slowly. “I don’t have much going for me…”

“Are you kidding me?!” Jamie leaned against the counter. It was then that Cassidy noticed he also had a tattoo sleeve in the process of being completed. “You’re like every guy’s wet dream. Long blonde hair, mysterious gray eyes… rockin’ hips.”

Cassidy blushed and turned her head to the side, reaching down to pick up her shoes, “I think I’m gonna get going.”

“Let me take you home. I’d feel bad if you took a cab.” Jamie stood up and tapped his pockets before he tucked his hand into one of them and pulled out his car keys.

By the time they were in his car, Cassidy really began hoping that he was as harmless as he seemed. Jamie seemed less forward than Tyler, and she prayed that she would make it home without another guy feeling her up.

“If you didn’t have any intention of sleeping with Tyler, why’d you come home with him?” Jamie glanced at her before returning his stare to the road. She had already given him her address, and he put it into the GPS.

Cassidy shrugged and looked at her fingernails, “maybe mostly because I didn’t want Kennedy to give me a hard time about not going. I think it kind of bothers her that I’m as shy as I am.” She paused and looked over at Jamie quickly, “you must get it. You seem pretty shy too.”

Jamie tilted his head to the side and set his arm down on the center console, “I’m actually not too shy. I just wasn’t having a good night, so…”

Cassidy sighed loudly as they turn onto the street of her apartment, and she began digging through her purse, looking for her keys. When the car stopped moving, Cassidy looked up to see Jamie sitting with his hands in his lap as he parked in the driveway.

“Thanks for driving me home Jamie,” she smiled and reached over to touch his arm quickly. “If you could just not mention you took me home… I kind of want Tyler to forget all about tonight.”

Jamie nodded quickly, biting his lower lip as Cassidy pushed open the passenger side door, preparing to get out. “There’s no shame in being a virgin.”

Cassidy looked back at Jamie as she stepped out of his car, a sly smile spreading across her face, “don’t tell me you’re one too.”

Jamie chuckled and shook his head, “I’m not. But I think it’s noble that you want to wait for someone you actually care about. I think it speaks volumes of the person you are.”

She smiled and readjusted her purse on her arm, “maybe we’ll run into each other at another bar, and you and I can be the ones dancing together.” She blushed and shut the door, running up to the gate of the apartment building. Before she disappeared inside, she looked back at Jamie and waved.

Two days after her birthday, Cassidy and Kennedy were in their small, cramped bathroom getting ready for the night. Cassidy’s father had gotten her tickets for the Dallas Stars game as a present. Although he was thrilled she’d be going to her first hockey game, Cassidy knew it was just because Dallas was playing her dad’s favorite team: the Nashville Predators.

It didn’t matter much to Cassidy, she’d go to the game, rant and rave about it to her father and then go on living life, allowing her memory of the game to vanish.

Kennedy had insisted that they look good tonight. As she put it, you never know who you might find. So here they were, putting on makeup, already dressed in tonight’s outfits. Kennedy had opted for a long dress, while Cassidy just threw on a pair of dark jeans and a nice blouse. She definitely didn’t plan on looking too good tonight, knowing she’d be sitting in a chair for two and a half hours.

Twenty minutes later they were out the door, heading to American Airlines Stadium to pick their tickets up from will call before they grabbed dinner before the game. When they parked, they split up; Kennedy going to grab a table at the restaurant, and Cassidy to pick up the tickets.

After she had gotten the tickets and was crossing the street, she noticed a man in a suit walking towards her, carrying a bag at his side. He had his head down, so it wasn’t until she noticed the slicked back hair, did she call out to him.

“Jamie?!” She said it just loud enough for the man to hear, hoping that if it wasn’t him, he would ignore her.

But he look up, and to Cassidy’s surprise, it actually was Jamie. He looked almost petrified to see her, but continued walking until they had met each other halfway.

“You look nice,” she motioned to his suit and tie. “What are you doing?”

Jamie stared down at her for a moment, smoothing out his suit jacket with his free hand as his other hand clutched at his bag tighter. “I have a work thing,”

Cassidy squinted her eyes and nodded at his cryptic response.

“Are you going to the game?” He asked almost inaudibly as if he didn’t really want to know the answer.

“Yeah my dad got me tickets for my birthday. He’s a huge hockey fan and I guess Dallas is playing Nashville, so he wanted me to go.”

“Where are your seats?”

Cassidy glanced up at Jamie, as he now seemed interested in the conversation. She shook it off and shrugged as she handed Jamie the tickets.

“Right next to the Dallas penalty box; nice seats.” Jamie inspected the tickets and then handed them back to Cassidy.

She giggled and shook her head, “I have no idea what that is.”

Jamie smiled and tilted his head to the side to look at her. “It’s where the players go when they’re being naughty.” He looked past her quickly and then murmured, “listen I have to go. But maybe I’ll see you later? Are you going out after the game?”

Cassidy bit her lip and shrugged, “I don’t know. I hope I see you though.”

Jamie smiled and bit his lower lip again, nodding his head before he walked past her. She didn’t look back at him, but instead just kept walking until she got to the restaurant and met up with Kennedy.

When the two girls had made their way back to the stadium and sat down in their seats, one thing became apparent. The fans around them wore one of two jerseys: number 91, Seguin. Or number 14, Benn. Cassidy figured they were the stars of the team and made a point to look for them throughout the game.

Although they were close to the ice, with how fast the game moved, Cassidy could only see the numbers of Seguin and Benn. It wasn’t until number 14 got a crosschecking penalty that Cassidy finally had a chance to see what the star player looked like.

He skated towards the penalty box, screaming at the ref that led him there like a petulant child. He continued to bang his stick on the ice until the ref herded him into the box and he sat down, still screaming things from his new resting place for the next two minutes.

When the game resumed, Cassidy looked back at the ice, trying to enjoy the action in front of her but was still curious to see the star player’s face. A whistle blew, stopping play, and Cassidy looked to her left, to get a glance of the player. She had to blink a couple of times, but soon it was just her and the player making eye contact with each other.

Realizing that she was staring at Jamie in the penalty box, her cheeks went red and her mouth dropped open. He offered a subtle smile before he turned to look back at the ice, still yelling as he felt a penalty should have been called.

Cassidy slowly looked back at the ice, burying her face in her hands, embarrassed by the entire situation. Just two hours prior, she had been talking to Jamie, making a fool of herself by not knowing who he was. And he let her. His ‘work thing’ was a hockey game, and he had every opportunity to tell her that and still chose not to.

The more she thought about it, the more worked up she got. And even as Jamie stood up and exited the penalty box, getting right back into the action, she could barely look at him. This was made even worse by the fact that she soon realized number 91 was Tyler, as well as seeing both Rich and Jordie on the ice as well. Cassidy felt like a whole hockey team had played her.

As the game ended, resulting in a win for Dallas, Cassidy explained the situation to Kennedy; how the men they’d met a few nights before were actually hockey players. And still believing in Cassidy’s well-kept lie, Kennedy praised her friend for getting it in with an athlete. If only she knew nothing had happened.

They were practically the last people to exit the arena. Their conversation had been so imperative that they almost hadn’t noticed the emptiness around them until an usher approached and asked if everything was all right. To which they responded by leaving the stadium.

Cassidy cursed herself under her breath once they walked outside. The Dallas air in the middle of February was just a bit too cold without a jacket. While Kennedy had brought one along, Cassidy hadn’t. She’d been fine inside the arena, surrounded by thousands of other people to keep her warm, but outside exposed to the environment, she was chilled.

Kennedy offered to run to the car and pick Cassidy up, allowing her to stay inside the building as long as possible. And so off she went, and Cassidy was left making her way inside. Her fast attempt mixed with her unsteadiness in the high heels didn’t bode well for the person she ran straight into. She prayed it wasn’t a woman, who would easily be sent to the floor by the impact.

Thankfully the body she ran into didn’t budge and being too embarrassed to look into the eyes of the person, she quietly apologized and tried to go around, but the person wouldn’t let her, and they clung onto her arms tightly.
