Seeing Stars

47: Riot

"Breakin' up my heart I'd try to fight it,I could go out every night but I'd be lyin' if I said I could live and breathe without you..."

The end of January signified a few things for Cassidy and Jamie. Their life together was changing on the daily and with so much going on, it was easy to lose track of time, only to see that weeks had flown by.

The short stretch after the all-star break consisted of a three game road trip, and as promised, it was one Cassidy had attended. Not only did the trip allow her to stay close with Jamie, but Kennedy had also gone along for the three-city tour of Canada. For whatever reason, whether it was for Tyler or not, Cassidy was glad to have her friend along for the ride. Things felt less lonely when they were together, and the extra hours together gave them time to catch up on all the things they’d missed talking about in the past month or so. Since announcing the pregnancy to her, Kennedy had stayed pretty well clear from all things considering the future Benn couple and their future child.

“So what’s been up with you?” Cassidy asked as innocently and unassuming as possible, despite the fact that it was suspicious that Kennedy was tagging along on almost every hockey function.

Kennedy shrugged and leaned back against the pillows. The girls were hidden away in Jamie’s hotel room, waiting for the boys to get back from their night out in Ottawa. “I’m just trying to figure things out. You got engaged, graduated, got pregnant… and I’m still trying to figure out which way is up.”

Cassidy tore open the wrapper to a king sized Milky Way and bit into the chocolaty goodness. “If you think I know which way is up, you’re sorely mistaken. In the past month I’m pretty sure I’ve eaten my way through a candy store. This baby Benn everyone is talking about is really gonna come out looking like a chocolate bunny.” When Kennedy rolled her eyes, Cassidy offered her the chocolate bar, “so what have you figured out?”

“That school was a waste of my time and money. I dropped out… and don’t go all mama bear on me, because I’ve already played devil’s advocate. I’ve already thought about the lecture your dad would’ve given me, but my decision is final.” She paused and reluctantly took a bit of the Milky Way, “it worked for you Cassidy, and I’m glad that it did because you always wanted a degree. But all I ever wanted was to get away from Tennessee, and once I did, the degree never seemed so important.”

“It might seem a little more important when you can’t get a job without one,”

“Cassidy don’t you see that we’re different? You always wanted to believe that we were the same and we were going to travel down the same path, but we’re not. I’m never going to be the perfect girl like you, and after living in that shadow for years, I finally think I’m okay with that.” She sat up with her legs folded in front of her and flicked a fuzz along the duvet, “I’m excited to see where your life goes. And please try to have faith in me even though we’re taking different routes to the destination.”

The hotel room door clicked open and Jamie shuffled in. He was already yawning as he loosened his tie, nodding at the two girls as they remained seated on the bed. He paused and looked down at his shirt, taking a moment before lifting his hands to undo the buttons, then allowed his dress shirt to slip off his shoulder and lay in a crumpled pile on the floor.

“How was dinner, Jame?” Cassidy set her head down on the pillow and pulled Kennedy down with her, “who’d you go with?”

“Ty, Daddy, Jordie, and Klinger… it was good, had some steak. But now I’m ready for some sleep.” He flopped down onto the bed, between the two girls, “you staying here tonight, Kennedy?”

Kennedy shook her head and shimmied out of the bed, gathering her things, “no I should actually get some sleep too.” She smiled and leaned back in to kiss Jamie’s cheek, “goodnight. Cassidy I’ll meet up with you before the game tomorrow.” Without a moment’s hesitation, she was out of the hotel room in record time.

Jamie turned to face Cassidy, who was still on her back, hands clasped over her stomach. Her lips were pursed, and as Jamie reached for her, the words left her mouth like vomit, “she dropped out. Can you believe it? It’s not like I can tell her that because she’d flip, but what the hell’s she thinking?”

“I didn’t go to university,” Jamie mumbled. His eyes had shut the moment his head hit the pillow, and now he was on his way into a deep sleep.

“Because you had some redeemable skill and talent. And not to say Kennedy isn’t talented, she’s a smart girl, but dropping out was not one of her smartest decisions. She needs guidance, clearly.”

Without opening his eyes, Jamie reached out, touching his fingertips to Cassidy’s mouth, “she will find her way.” He peeked past his eyelids and pulled his hand back, getting into a more comfortable position. “Do not mother her; it’ll just drive her further away. Plus you need to save up all your mothering for the human inside of you. That person’s going to be much more dependent on you than Kennedy ever has been. She will find her way.”

Cassidy stared at him quietly ultimately knowing he was right. Whether she liked it or not, Kennedy was going to make and live by her own decisions. She slid closer to Jamie and tucked into his side, slipping one of her hands onto his back, rubbing it softly as he drifted further into a state of rest. All the while, rubbing his back served to keep her mind off of Kennedy, and the frustration that that inevitably led to.

They sat beside the Dallas penalty box, both girls somewhere between the mix of actually watching the game, and being too preoccupied with their conversation. However, they didn’t miss the chance to root on their boys, and boo when Ottawa stepped onto the ice.

“You’re right, I should trust you more. We’re taking different routes to the destination, but we’ll both get there eventually,” Cassidy reached over and held onto Kennedy’s hand, squeezing it reassuringly.

“Thanks Knoxious. And all it took you was one conversation with Jamie to figure that out,” Kennedy joked back, knowing fully well that Cassidy had mentioned the entire thing to her fiancé.

“I just thought you wanted a degree. I thought that was important to you. And I suppose I’m just trying to figure out where that all changed.”

Kennedy went silent, and Cassidy looked over at her as she looked down at her lap, obviously contemplating whether or not she should say something. “I just really want to be a mom. And I think I realized that’s the only job I’ve ever really wanted… To take care of someone the way your parents took care of me,”

“What made you realize that?”

Both girls cringed as two men came barreling towards the glass, checking each other equally as hard. Kennedy glanced at Cassidy, “I’ve kinda been seeing Jason…”

Cassidy stared at her friend in mild disbelief. Up until this point, she thought she’d still been sleeping around with the team. “You mean Daddy? What do you mean kinda seeing?”

Kennedy looked out at the ice, and presumably at the Dallas bench, where Jason was sucking wind after his last shift. “We hang out and talk, but there’s no… penetration,”

“Okay, yeah, I didn’t need to hear that word.” Cassidy shot her a playful glance, but then nudged her shoulder, trying to get more out of her. “So like no sexual stuff at all?”

Kennedy shrugged, “we kiss and stuff but he doesn’t touch me like that… and when I touched him, he made me stop… I don’t know, now that I’m talking about it, it’s kind of weird right?”

“Maybe he just wants to make sure it’s real? Let’s not lie to ourselves; you’ve slept with like four of his teammates. Maybe he just wants to take it slow with you?” She paused and looked out at the ice to watch the action, “you are worth that, Kennedy. Having a guy go slow with you to harness a real relationship… you’re worth that, and I think he wants to make sure you know you’re worth that.”

“All he’s doing is driving me insane. Do you even know how long it’s been since another human has touched me in a non-PG13 way? It’s been awhile, Knoxious! I think the last one was Antoine, and it was barely pleasurable.”

Cassidy shook her head and brought her hands up to her ears to cover them. The last thing she really wanted to hear was a detailed account of the sexual encounters Kennedy had had in the past weeks, or lack thereof.

With the game ending positively for Dallas, both girls knew the team would be buzzing. For Cassidy, she knew that despite the team having to get on a plane for Winnipeg, Jamie would be exceptionally affectionate after having such a stellar game.

The girls had been given passes to meander through the back hallways of the arena, and just as soon as they could, they were waiting by the visiting team locker room, waiting for the boys to come out.

“Wait, so should I say something or am I supposed to pretend like I don’t know that y’all are sort of seeing each other.” Cassidy readjusted her purse on her shoulder and then clasped her hands in front of her as her excited nerves began to overwhelm her.

“I don’t know,” she gasped equally as nervous. “I guess I’ll have to see how he reacts when he comes out.”

Cassidy smiled at Kennedy. It was really the first time she had ever seen her nervous about a boy. And the fact that Jason had that effect on her was promising that what they had could be real. The remainder of the waiting period was done in silence. But thankfully it didn’t last very long.

The team came bustling out, hollering and chirping at each other, all in good fun. Jason came out before Jamie, and when he spotted Kennedy, he made a beeline for her. Cassidy stood back as she watched everything unfold, from the sight of Jason running up to her, to the way he lifted her tiny five foot three body in the air to kiss her. Whether or not each player had made a significant impact on the game, the fact that the Stars were able to double up on the Senators and beat them six to three, had everyone buzzing.

Cassidy was in her own world, happy that her friend had found someone who seemed worthy. She was so caught up in it, that she was taken by surprise when she was being nudged backwards, a large body blocking her view from everything else. When she looked up at Jamie, he was beaming from ear to ear.

“Congratulations on your goals!” Cassidy shrieked, and jumped up to wrap her arms around his neck. As he giggled and caught her, she leaned in to kiss his cheek, slowly moving towards his earlobe, “you’re so sexy when you celly… I just want to rip your clothes off,”

Jamie turned his head to look down at her, lust in his eyes. He kissed her lips slowly, like he was taking the time to taste her, but it was cut short. And when Cassidy pulled back to see the interruption, she blushed at the sight of Lindy Ruff, tugging on Jamie’s shoulder to get him moving. For him, it didn’t matter if they were dating, engaged, or married, he wanted his team to stay focused so they’d be able to repeat what they’d done tonight. And to Lindy, now wasn’t the time to be displaying acts of affection.

Jamie nodded to his coach and then turned back to Cassidy, “I’ll see you at the hotel, get you naked, and make love tonight.” He grinned again and brushed his fingertips through her blonde hair, tucking it behind her ear.

“Sounds perfect,” she smiled and wrapped her hand around his, squeezing it excitedly. “See you baby,”

Jamie kissed her again quickly, and then turned around and gripped onto the collar of Jason’s dress shirt, pulling him away from Kennedy and out the door. And just like that, the girls were left alone again; granted they’d soon be on a flight, and then three hours later be in Winnipeg. But overall, it was nice to have a friend to travel with.

Landing at nearly two in the morning was a shock to the body, especially since Cassidy had felt like she’d been up for days. Once getting their luggage, she and Kennedy took a cab over to the hotel, excited to see their men again; hopefully for a longer amount of time.

The hotel looked like a ghost town by the time they got there. The front desk staff spoke quietly to each other as they really had nothing else to do, while on couches just across the lobby, Jamie and Jason were talking to each other. When the girls got to them, both men stood up, greeted the woman they wouldn’t be spending the night with, and then went into the elevator to get to their respective rooms.

One wing of the fourth floor seemed to be devoted entirely to the team, as some players lined the hallway, still laughing and joking to each other. By tomorrow, they’d have to practice, but for now, the win had them wired. And they all stared at their captain as he walked down the hall with Cassidy. They weren’t idiots; they all knew what was going to go down, and maybe that’s what made her so nervous by the time Jamie closed the hotel room door behind them. Just on the other side of the wall, a hockey team knew their business.

“So the captain doesn’t have to share a room?” Cassidy smirked as she sat on the edge of Jamie’s bed.

He shook his head and walked towards her, “I told Tyler to give us an hour.”

Cassidy closed her eyes and smiled. “Tell him to come on in. He’s got to be tired; you’ve got to be tired.” When Jamie opened his mouth to object, Cassidy reached for his hand, “I’ll do you a little favor tomorrow.” After making it clear, she stood and kissed him quickly, “I’m gonna go change.”

She slipped into the bathroom, shutting the door behind her. And then midway through changing into some pajamas, she could hear Tyler and Jamie talking from the bedroom. It wasn’t anything important, probably just about Sportsnet, as Cassidy could also hear noise now coming from the television.

When she got back into the room, both boys were propped up in their own beds and each of them also in their underwear. Cassidy shook her head as though she had just walked into a frat house. And at first she didn’t realize the stares she was getting from Tyler.

“Hey,” Jamie snapped quickly at Tyler.

Cassidy came out of her slight daze, and looked up, realizing that Tyler had been staring at her as she walked towards Jamie, wearing nothing but a small cotton dress. She became self-conscious, tiptoeing towards the bed before she could curl into Jamie’s body.

Once his big frame mostly hid her, she glanced over at Tyler, who had since returned his attention to the TV as though he really hadn’t seen anything at all. She scooted further down into bed, laying her head in Jamie’s lap and moaned softly as she got into a more comfortable position. With one hand tucked beneath her head, she curled her fingers around the bulge in between his legs, and looking up at him, she could see his expression turn to into amusement although he didn’t look down at her.

Jamie set his hand down on Cassidy’s waist, gripping her tightly as her hand tightened around his shaft. She could feel him start to get hard, and just when Tyler began to stir to get settled in his bed, she stopped moving her hand, trying to conceal what they were doing.

After getting situated, Tyler clicked off the TV, “I’m putting my earphones on now, so you can give him a proper handy. Or blowjob, I don’t care.” He turned on his side away from them, and that was the last they heard from Tyler for the rest of the night.
