Crossing the Line

Chapter Fifteen

Jackie sighed and accepted the fact that she was trying to fit Logan’s bra on. Walking across the hall after finishing getting dressed she tossed the bra on Logan’s bed and went back to finish her make up. “Jackie do I look pretty?” Logan asked bursting into Jackie’s room and pulling her best friend from her thoughts. “Just like Judy Garland,” Jackie said with a smile taking in her old style outfit. “Thanks, we’re going dancing because he promised me we could back in Buffalo. Text me if you want me to stay at Tuukka’s again tonight,” Logan said with a wink. Jackie rolled her eyes but knew she would probably end up texting her. “That goal deserves a lot of sex. Plus they’re going on a road trip,” Jackie said laughing when Logan cringed. “Alright I’m heading down since he’ll be here any minute,” Logan told Jackie who protested and told her to let him be gentleman match the outfit. “It’s just because we’re going dancing, real dancing not clubbing,” she laughed leaning against the door and offering her help while Jackie got ready for her date. Their talking and laughing was interrupted by a knock on the door. “That’s your gentleman, mine won’t be here for another twenty minutes,” Jackie said checking the time on her watch. “Alright be good, use protection, and I’ll see you in the morning love,” Logan blew Jackie a kiss and ran down the hall to the door in her heels. “You look beautiful,” Jackie heard Tuukka compliment and knew from his tone he was blown away. She rolled her eyes and went back to applying her mascara. “Tazer stop that,” Logan chastised from the hall getting Jackie’s attention. “What’s he doing?” she asked walking out to see. “He keeps growling when we go to leave but he’s not growling at either of us, he’s growling at the door,” Logan said with a confused frown. “I’ll soothe him while you two slip out,” Jackie offered getting grateful looks from both Logan and Tuukka. “Alright Tazer you need to relax, come help me get ready. We can sing together,” Jackie joked bringing the dog back to her room with her.

“What’s got you all smiley?” Tuukka asked poking Logan’s cheek only making her blush while she kept smiling. “I’m just really happy. We’re going out even though you met my crazy hockey family and Pat called me today to say that Mama wouldn’t shut up about you and Dougie and he promised to call me more. Even Jon was in contact to tell me he thought we were good together even though we’re not dating. It’s a good feeling when your family likes your favorite person,” Logan said her smiling growing as she spoke. Before Tuukka could respond to her cheesiness Frank Sinatra’s Fly Me to the Moon began to play. Knowing it was Logan’s favorite song to dance to Tuukka stood and offered her his hand with a slight bow. Fighting the urge to giggle Logan followed him from their table to the dance floor. Not holding back Logan started to laugh as they danced the foxtrot around the floor drawing looks at how well they danced together for a couple with a little less than a foot height difference. “I wonder how many people recognize the big bad Bruins’ goalie out here dancing like Fred Astaire,” Logan teased her hands on his shoulders as he lifted her for a turn. “I wonder if they know the little red head out here with him has two Olympic medals and two NHL teams wrapped around her finger,” he mused back pulling her close for the finish at the end of the song. “I’m so glad Cam stopped going dancing with me,” Logan said kissing Tuukka on the cheek when he stayed on the dance floor as Build Me Up Buttercup started to play. “You’re lucky I love you so much or you would’ve had to take out an ad, there’s no one else on the team willing to learn to ballroom dance with you,” Tuukka said smiling as they danced the east coast swing. Logan laughed making him grin down at her, he would learn to do anything to make her laugh out of pure happiness as often as possible. “I’m going to miss you,” Logan said after the dance when they walked over to get drinks from the bar. Tuukka smiled sadly at her and pulled her into his side, planting a kiss on the top of her head. “That lady in the corner keeps smiling and sighing when she looks at us,” Tuukka said and Logan knew what he meant, the lady thought they were a perfect couple. Everyone seemed to think that but Logan knew Tuukka only loved her platonically, and he would only ever love her platonically.

“Dating a hockey player is hard,” Jackie whined waiting for the kettle to boil. As if he knew she was feeling lonely Tazer had rarely left Jackie’s side since Dougie left; the only time the puppy strayed was when he stood guard by Logan growling at an invisible threat. Logan chuckled and made Jackie’s tea for her, pitying her best friend. “I know how you feel. Kind of. I’m so used to sleeping with Tuukka when I have an early shift that I couldn’t sleep last night,” Logan said smiling softly, something Jackie noticed. “Dougie calls you every night though which is easily the sweetest thing ever,” Logan continued handing Jackie her favorite mug. Jackie sipped on the tea hoping it would help ease the soreness in her back. “So we have tomorrow off, want to watch a movie?” Logan suggested knowing they still had time before Dougie called. “I love having one full day in common. Thursdays are our day. We have most of other days in common too but Thursdays are the only guaranteed day I have to interact with you,” Jackie rambled walking to the living room with Tazer close on her heels. “You can pick out a movie I’m going to change quickly,” Logan said setting her cocoa down on the coffee table and heading for her room. “Alright Tazer what do you want to watch? Something stupid and funny,” Jackie suggested to the pup who wagged his tail in response. Taking that as encouragement Jackie flipped through Netflix to see if anything caught her eye. Chuckling she selected a movie that she knew Logan would love and let it play through the opening credits so Logan wouldn’t know the title.

“You better have chosen something good,” Logan threatened plopping on the couch in her favorite Northeastern sweats and one of Tuukka’s tee-shirts. “And she says they aren’t dating,” Jackie muttered playing the movie so Logan wouldn’t hear her. When they got far enough into the movie and Logan realized it was a Robin Hood parody she started to laugh. “You picked this because Robin Hood was our favorite movie right up until we graduated high school,” Logan accused. Jackie couldn’t deny it and began to laugh with her. They were clutching their stomachs laughing and talking about stupid things they did in high school when Dougie called. Jackie answered the phone but couldn’t stop laughing to actually say anything so Logan took the phone. “Did you know when we were sophomores in high school Jackie and I had the house to ourselves for the weekend. Papa Kaner had taken Pat and Cam to a hockey tournament, Mama had taken Jessica and Erica to visit family but Jackie and I had hockey practice and couldn’t go to either so we stayed home. We decided to have a party one night because you know we were popular being on the hockey team and all. Both hockey teams, the soccer teams and some of the swimming team came over and we ended up watching Disney movies all night. The cops showed up because there were so many cars they wanted to see if there was a party and they laughed so hard when they saw us watching Robin Hood that they didn’t even tell Mama and Papa Kaner we had people over when we shouldn’t have,” Logan said tears rolling down her face from laughter. On the other end of the phone Logan heard Dougie cracking up and relaying the story to whoever was around him, most likely Matt Fraser, David Pastrnak and the other young guys on the team. “Logan shut up and let me talk to my boyfriend,” Jackie said snatching the phone back. “Just for that I’m puppy napping Tazer, he’s sleeping with me tonight!” Logan exclaimed running into her room and calling Tazer who followed her eagerly. “She’s stupid but I love her,” Jackie said to Dougie. “More than you love me?” he teased getting a chorus of ‘ooh’s in the background. “Never,” Jackie smiled into the phone.

“Logan I need you,” Jackie announced bursting into her room. “Sorry goalie, she has to go,” Jackie said taking the phone from Logan and hanging up. “What’s wrong? Jackie is everything okay?” Logan asked starting to worry when she saw the look on Jackie’s face. She shook her head. “Everything is most certainly not okay!” Jackie exclaimed tears welling in her eyes. Logan followed Jackie out to the living room where Tazer was sitting next to her laptop waiting for them to come back. “I was checking in around the league and I got curious so I clicked Boston and found this,” Jackie said pointing to her laptop. On the screen was a tumblr blog that both girls followed that was dedicated to the wives and girlfriends of the NHL. Though they would never admit to anyone but each other they used it primarily to spy on Chicago and see if the boys had girlfriends they weren’t telling the family about. It took Logan a moment to realize what she was looking for but then she noticed a familiar name on the list. Next Dougie Hamilton where it once read ‘Single’ it now said ‘Jackie Kane’. Logan crinkled her brow in confusion. Ignoring the other familiar name on the list, her name, she turned to Jackie. “Why is this so awful? This makes you officially official and now girls will stay away from him,” Logan rationalized not understanding why she was worried. “But now everyone is going to hate me and what if he changes his mind? Then I would have to be taken off and that’s more than I care to think about right now,” Jackie said freaking out. Not knowing how else to calm her friend down Logan wrapped her in a hug and held her until her breathing returned to normal. “Better?” Logan asked rubbing Jackie’s back. Jackie nodded her head but didn’t trust herself to say anything. “Dougie clearly loves you. You two have been ‘seeing each other’ since preseason and you’ve been dating for reals for about two months even though you’ve been on the same page for a few weeks. You’re the most disgustingly cute couple I’ve seen since I got used to the WAGs. So don’t even worry about being on the blog,” Logan said trying to reassure her friend. Jackie sighed and nodded her head. “If you say it’s true then I believe you. You wouldn’t lie to me to make me feel better,” Jackie said. “On the bright side, he’ll be home Sunday night after the game tomorrow,” Logan said hugging her best friend tighter.

“Jackie I can’t find any tampons,” Logan complained walking into Jackie’s room in a towel. “There are probably some under my sink,” Jackie said and then paused. She normally got her period before Logan and then they overlapped for a day. “Logan, how long have you had your period?” Jackie called out already pretty sure she knew the answer. “I got it Thursday so thank god it will be done tomorrow. God bless four day periods,” Logan said walking out of the bathroom with a box of tampons. “Logan, I should have had my period already,” Jackie told her looking up nervously. Logan paused for a moment considering Jackie’s words. “I’m going to get dressed while you think about when you had sex and then we’re going to make a game plan,” she said carefully before hurrying out of the room. Jackie did as she was told and tried to remember how many times she and Dougie had had sex. Her blood ran cold when she remembered they had been too caught up to remember a condom the first time. “After the Sens game we had sex but we were a little distracted and forgot about using a condom,” Jackie said twisting her rings nervously when Logan came back into the room. “Have you been sick? Had any abnormal soreness or bloating?” Logan asked trying to cover all the normal early symptoms. “Sick not really. I felt gross the other day but that was just a one-day thing. Soreness yeah my lower back has been sore for a week or two now,” Jackie paled more than Logan thought possible. “Alright you’re going to sit here and drink your tea and think calm thoughts and I’m going to go buy every pregnancy test at CVS. So maybe you should drink a lot of water because you’re going to be doing a lot of peeing,” Logan said with a smile.

Jackie tried to do everything Logan suggested drinking a cup of tea and a water all before Logan came back with a bag bursting with boxes. “Alright it’s time to start peeing!” Logan sang walking into the condo. Jackie couldn’t help but crack a smile at Logan’s attempts to ease the tension. “So I just pee and then we wait?” Jackie asked looking at the boxes. “Jeez girl, you’re the maternity nurse, shouldn’t you know?” Logan teased as Jackie disappeared into the bathroom. “How long do I have to wait?” Jackie asked after re-emerging from the bathroom. “It’s five minutes for the longest one so we’ll just check them all in five minutes. But we’re going to go make cookies in the mean time,” Logan announced pulling Jackie to the kitchen with her. “Of course we are. In time of a crisis what does Logan do? She bakes!” Jackie said sounded slightly crazed. “You forgot to breathe!” Logan sang waltzing around the kitchen and getting out everything she needed. “Here,” she said tossing Jackie a bag of chocolate chips to munch while they made cookies. “What if I’m pregnant and he decides not to stay with me? What if he wants nothing to do with the baby? What if-“ Jackie started to cry with a mouthful of chocolate chips. “Come here hun,” Logan abandoned her cookies and wrapped her arms around Jackie. “It’s normal to worry about that since you haven’t been together for very long and weren’t trying for a baby. It’s as normal as sleeping with someone and then dating them. Both things happen all the time so don’t worry. He’s going to do the right thing though. If I know anything about Dougie I know he’ll do the right thing. If I were you I would be more worried about telling Pat and Papa Kaner. And Mama will probably cry. A lot,” Logan said starting to laugh at thinking about how they would react. Jackie couldn’t help but laugh with her picturing the looks on everyone’s faces if she was pregnant. The two were on the floor dissolved in a fit of laughter when the timer went off. “You ready to find out what the pee stick says?” Logan asked wiping the tears of her best friend’s face. Jackie nodded her head and the two headed for the bathroom with all the pregnancy tests waiting to be read.

My heart hurts for what's happening to Logan :( the drama is a very good driving force though. I'm so happy that Tuukka finally vocalized his feelings, and I hope that he gets her home soon so they can be together and happy.
