Hawks Are Meant to Fly

A Kazer Wedding

A month later,

Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane are scheduled to get married. It is a nice and rare four day break, so they figure it will be the best time to handle the wedding. They have already come forward down the aisle and are now standing under the Chicago arch on a platform, admiring the event and smiling enough to make their cheeks hurt with the effort. It is even sunny outside. The gorgeous day allows for the two players to enjoy their moment and know that they are doing the right thing.

And they can’t be happier to be officially coming out.

Two rows of clusters of chairs are before them. Up front on the left side, sit the rest of the team. Most of them are crying tears of joy and a few look nervous...maybe unsure if this will work out. But it will. Jonathan has tossed the idea of getting married to Patrick more than a puck in his blade and he knows this is what both of them want. And they will have support from the staff and boys. They can do this!

On the right side, up front, is the happy and sobbing Kane and Toews families. They are dabbing their eyes or conversing with each other. They are proud of their two sons or brothers. It is evident on their faces. Though they are firm believers in straight marriage, between a man and woman, they cannot deny the pleasure in seeing their sons/brothers madly and happily in love. They have wished for nothing less and nothing more.

Jonathan finds his hands lightly circling and stroking Patrick’s, in an attempt to grab at them and hold them in his own. The blond is blushing behind his veil, which he wears atop his head. It is a silky feminine material, which he’s had attached to the princess crown or tiara. The object is no longer Patrick’s sister’s, but his own. (A gift from sister to brother.)

“You ready? You sure you want to do this?” the brunette Captain asks his younger partner, seriously.

“I’m positive Jonny. We can’t conceal our emotions anymore. We are madly in love and this way, Kessel can’t do anything to mess this up!” Patrick states, raising his head up proudly. He gives a little toss of his head to move the veil out of the way and then blinks, gazing into the Captain’s shimmering amber eyes.

Jonathan dips his head. He takes Patrick’s hands into his own and faces him. “Let’s do this then, Patrick Timothy Kane-Toews!”

Patrick chuckles, his smile growing each second.

They turn to the priest, who is dressed in the classic catholic marriage attire, consisting of a white gown and a hat. He is holding a book, open in his hands and begins to “read” from it, glancing up at them every so often.

“Patrick and Jonathan we are gathered here together to witness the love and respect that you have for each other. Are you entering into this marriage freely, voluntarily and without any conditions?”

“Yes,” both respond, sharing a look with each other. Jonathan winks to Patrick, who blushes reddish pink again.

“Get some Tazer and Kaner!” Andrew’s boisterous chirp rings on. “YEAH!”

“Happiness in marriage is not something that just happens. A good marriage must be created. The little things are the big things. It is never being too old to hold hands. It is remembering to say "I love you" at least once a day.”

“It is never going to sleep angry. It is at no time taking the other for granted; the courtship should not end with the honeymoon, it should continue through all the years.”

“It is having a mutual sense of values and common objectives. It is standing together facing the world. It is forming a circle of love that gathers in the whole family. It is doing things for each other, not in the attitude of duty or sacrifice, but in the spirit of joy.”

“It is speaking words of appreciation and demonstrating gratitude in thoughtful ways. It is not expecting one person to wear a halo or the other to have the wings of an angel. It is not looking for perfection in each other. It is cultivating flexibility, patience, understanding and a sense of humor. It is having the capacity to forgive and forget. It is giving each other an atmosphere in which each can grow.”

“It is finding room for the things of the spirit. It is a common search for the good and the beautiful. It is establishing a relationship in which the independence is equal, dependence is mutual and the obligation is reciprocal. It is not only marrying the right partner, it is being the right partner.”

“Marriage also bestows enormous private and social advantages on those who choose to marry. Civil marriage is at once a deeply personal commitment to another human being and highly public celebration of the ideals of mutuality, companionship, intimacy, fidelity, and family…..Because it fulfills yearnings for security, safe haven, and connection that express our common humanity, civil marriage is an esteemed institution, and the decision whether and whom to marry is among life’s momentous acts of self-definition.”

“Patrick and Jonathan please face each other and repeat after me,” the priest says, as both Blackhawk forwards turn to one another, happily grinning. They gaze into one another’s shining eyes. The priest says the following lines, which are then repeated by each man. “Jonathan, I come here today to join your life for years, I pledge to be true to you, to respect you, and to grow with you through the years. We are many things to each other, may only those best qualities continue to shine and may our bond continue to grow stronger time may pass, fortune may smile, trials may come; no matter what we may encounter together, I vow here today that this love will be my only love. I will make my home in your heart from this day forward.”

“Jonny, I come here today to join your life for years,” Patrick repeats. “I pledge to be true to you, to respect you, and to grow with you through the years. We are many things to each other, may only those best qualities continue to shine and may our bond continue to grow stronger time may pass, fortune may smile, trials may come; no matter what we may encounter together, I vow here today that this love will be my only love. I will make my home in your heart from this day forward.”

The priest nods. He turns to Jonathan now. He reads out what the brunette is to say, which is the same thing.

“Kaner, I come here today to join your life for years, I pledge to be true to you, to respect you,
and to grow with you through the years. We are many things to each other, may only those best qualities continue to shine and may our bond continue to grow stronger time may pass, fortune may smile, trials may come; no matter what we may encounter together, I vow here today that this love will be my only love. I will make my home in your heart from this day forward,” Jonathan repeats, as he gazes deeply into the lovable baby blues.

“Please, get out your rings for one another.”

Jonathan and Patrick both withdraw their rings, which are more like wedding bands. Patrick is still wearing his Blackhawk-themed one on from the proposal. But nevertheless, he gets the second ring, being the one with the veil and the slight feminine side.

Patrick slides the band onto Jonathan’s finger, as he recites, “Jonny, what I have to give you is the promise to take you as my only love from this day forward, to stand by your side, to listen when you speak, to comfort you when you cry, and to join your laughter with my own. Take this ring, and be part of my life forever.”

Jonathan takes Patrick’s hand delicately into his hands and slides the second band onto his finger, as he says, “Kaner, what I have to give you is the promise to take you as my only love from this day forward, to stand by your side, to listen when you speak, to comfort you when you cry, and to join your laughter with my own. Take this ring, and be part of my life forever.”

They return to holding both of their hands before them.

“Your gift to each other for your wedding today has been your wedding rings. The wedding ring is a symbol of the vows taken here today…….a circle of wholeness perfect in form. The unending circle of a ring is a sign of fidelity, the pledged faithfulness of a couple to each other. These rings mark the beginning of an unending journey together filled with wonder and surprises, laughter and tears, celebration and joy. May these rings glow in the warmth and happiness of you both today.”

“There may be times filled with happiness, sorrow, tears or laughter, whatever it may be, remember love has given you wings; your journey begins today; Jonathan and Patrick, if there is anything you remember of this marriage ceremony, remember the love that brought you here today, it is only love which can make your marriage a glorious union, and it is by love that your marriage will endure.”

“Patrick Timothy Kane Jr., do you take Jonathan Bryan Toews as your lawfully wedded husband?”

“I do,” Patrick responds, still smirking and laughing.

“Will you love, respect and honor him throughout your years together?”

“I will,” he responds again.

“And Jonathan Bryan Toews, do you take Patrick Timothy Kane Jr. as your lawfully wedded husband?”

“I do,” Jonathan responds, grinning from ear to ear with joy.

“Will you love, respect and honor him throughout your years together?”

“I will,” he responds again.

“Jonathan and Patrick, as you have consented together in lawful wedlock and thereto have pledged your faith to each other, and have declared the same by joining hands and giving and receiving of rings and exchanged your first gifts as a married couple and by the powers vested in me as a Justice of the Peace for the Commonwealth of Chicago, Illinois, I now pronounce you as husband and husband and are now happily married!”

Patrick tears his hands free from Jonathan and throws them around him in a big, excited embrace. “My Jonny!” he chants.

The brunette struggles to lift his hands up to hug him back, but finally succeeds. And the two of them hug on the podium, taking in the magical realization that they were no longer friends or best friends...they were a couple.

The priest closes the book he was “reading” from and addresses the crowd once more. “If anyone is opposed to this marriage, let him speak now.” No one makes any movement to oppose them. Not even the people who were nervous about them. Everyone is happy for them and wishing them the best.

The two finally break apart and resume chuckling, blushing and grinning, as they hold hands to finish off the ceremony.

“If you wish to seal this marriage with a kiss, you may now do so.”

“Kiss him!” chants rise up from the gathered crowd.

Jonathan waves his hand in a “settle down” motion and then takes Patrick’s head into his hands, cradling him, cupping his hands on either side of the blond’s face, under the veil and leans forward, pressing his lips to the blue-eyed blond.

Patrick purposefully lifts his leg up in a joking manner, playing up the “female” role and lets his arms dangle to his sides. A collective laughter and awe ignites around the area and then they pull apart and rush down the aisle, holding onto one another.

Another picture that I found and I have captioned that relates to this story:

Kessel: I'm going to get to Kaner, one way or another.
Jonny: *heartily chuckles* Not on your life, Kess. You're on my team now.
Kessel: We'll see about that, Jonny Boy.

You laugh now, but just wait for tonight and tomorrow...I hope Kessel and Kaner aren't on the same line, for the sake of Kazer. XP

"I was heartbroken about that one," Toews said with some sarcasm. "It's part of the business. Sometimes you've got to part ways with guys and players that you feel strongly about. That was the case there." - Jonathan Toews on "trading" Phil Kessel, All-Star Draft 2015
(Honestly, I read this out of context and cracked up...think about Jonny talking about it in a bad way and about Kanerboo in this story. :P)
More fuel to the Kessner/Kazer fire.
