A New Leaf
Chapter 2 - Meet Mila
My name is Mila Jacobsen, I'm 24 years old and I live in my dorm room at the University of Toronto. I'm in my fourth year, aiming towards getting my MD. I have a near perfect GPA and a clean record. But it hasn't always been that way.
As soon as I got out of high school, I knew I wanted to be a doctor. I wanted to help people, I was a people person and felt like I was on earth to please. In my third year, and final year of obtaining my bachelors degree in science, tragedy struck. My parents were both in a fatal accident on the way to the ceremony where I, their only child, would receive my degree.
As as soon as I found out that it was basically my fault, I gave up all dreams of being anything in my life. I had no family, and felt so alone. I lived with my then-fiancé, Jonathan, who tried to help me through everything. However, as you can see from my horrible nightmares and flashbacks, his help wasn't much use to me. I never left my room for anything in the few months after my parents passed away. If I got up it was only for a another bottle of alcohol. I was a heavy drinker, and eventually an unfaithful bitch.
I knew that Jonathan didn't deserve my shit, but he put up with me and gave me a place to live. Until of course, he caught me cheating, on multiple occasions and eventually threw me out of the apartment that we had shared ever since high school graduation. I really didn't mean to cheat, but I made me feel wanted. After Jonathan ended things with me, I decided that it was time to get my life back on track. I didn't have my high school love with me any more. I was on my own, and ready to grow up.
So, I applied to universities. I was still extremely determined to become a doctor. Even though things in my life had crashed down, I wanted to help save and rebuild others. That brings me to where I am now, at The University of Toronto. In my dorm room. About to be late for class.
I rushed to get all of my books together in my back pack and decided that I would be showing up to this god-awful 8am lecture on anatomy in my frosty the snowman pajamas and a hoody, even though it was March, and Christmas was well over. I wanted to be a doctor, not a fashionista, what can I say?
Quickly, I threw my long blonde hair up into a high ponytail and ran mascara over my eyelashes to brighten up my boring brown eyes. That'll make it look like I gave a shit. But really, who am I trying to impress?
With my coffee tumbler and one hand and book bag in the other, I ran across campus to the lecture hall, where I sat for two hours. I sat at the front of the room, because I truly wanted to absorb as much information as possible, and I was a bit of a nerd. Once the lecture was over, I headed to my next class which was a lab, and then I was free for Spring Break.
Well, not actually free. I would be working at a sports rehab clinic for the next two weeks, trying to gain experience for my future. It also let me try out some new things, as I wasn't sure what to specialize in after med school, but right now sports medicine seemed to be in high demand, so I was going to try it out.
------------------
When I got to my what should have been empty dorm room, I was surprised to find my best friend, Erin, (who is also working towards her MD) sitting on my bed, decked out in a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey. She was a huge fan of the leafs, and knew everything you could ever want to know about them. I was the opposite. Sure, I watched their games with her, but I didn't care too much for any of the players. Spending time with my friend when she was happy made me slightly less upset with life, so we had a tradition of watching the leafs game in either of our dorm rooms.
"Erin why are you here so early?" I asked her, as I put down my books at the white desk beside my door.
"I got tired of waiting for you to come out of class, and plus, your bed is about a million times comfier than mine!" She bounced up and down, with her curly brown hair following.
"When's the game on anyways?" I ask as I joined her on the bed, looking over to the tv, which was already on Sportsnet.
"7:00 but they're announcing this new guy onto the team and I thought we could watch that." She said, in reference to whoever the player was on the screen. A guy with dark brown hair and brown eyes. For some reason I couldn't shake the fact that I knew him from somewhere.
