A New Leaf
Chapter 3- Meet Tyler
I woke up on Saturday morning, to the bright Toronto sky, and an unexplainable weight on my chest. When I looked down, I saw that Erin had passed out on top of me, and the TV was still on Sportsnet from last nights game. I dug through my white sheets until I found the remote, and flipped through the channels until I reached the news.
They were reporting the leafs win over The Avalanche and talking about their new recruit Something-Zak. I didn't quite catch the name, but I still couldn't stop thinking that I knew him from somewhere. It was probably just my mind playing tricks on me. After watching the weather forecast, I decided to get up from bed.
Originally I was going to be gentle with Erin, but she crushed my ribs last night when she could have easily walked across the hall to her own room. Gentle was not an option.
"WAKE UP ITS TIME TO SEE THE DAY WAKEY WAKEY WEEEOOOWEEEEOOOO"
"Mila what the hell it's like 5am" she cried.
"Actually Erin, it's 9:30." I said matter of factly, pushing her off of me, and then beginning to gather all my things so I could take a shower. "Hey do you want to go out for breakfast before I have to go to the clinic?"
"Yeah sure, that sounds great!" She said rubbing her stomach to show her apparent hunger.
"Awesome. But get ready you need to shower." I gagged jokingly throwing a bottle of shampoo at her.
After we were showered and ready to go, we headed to Tim Hortons for coffee and donuts. Erin and I have always called donuts the breakfast of champions, no matter what any lecture about healthy eating told us, nothing could stop us from eating three every Saturday morning. Once we finished, Erin offered to drive me to the Athletes clinic and pick me up, as she would be doing absolutely nothing for all of spring break, while I would be in for the medical internship of a lifetime.

When I arrived at the sports medicine clinic, otherwise known as "Cleveland Clinic" I was greeted by a pale woman with short, orangey-red hair.
"Good morning Ms. Jacobsen, I'm Dr. Williams!" She stuck out her hand and I shook it firmly, hoping to make a good impression.
"Good morning, I'm extremely excited to start helping out here!" I exclaimed.
"That's fantastic to hear," she smiled, "follow me to my office, I'll explain your job to you and then you can get started!"
She turned and I followed her from the reception desk to a large hallway with white walls and white tile floors. The doors were dark oak, and there were a few sports related pictures on the walls. Once we got to her huge office, I was greeted by Toronto Maple Leafs memorabilia everywhere. I looked at all the flags, posters and jerseys and wondered how jealous Erin would be. I guess Dr. Williams saw my awe when she let out a soft laugh.
"Oh don't mind all the blue and white, we're actually the clinic for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the players always bring me plenty of items to decorate this place with, because they know I'm such a big fan." She then motioned for me to take a seat at on of the chairs that surrounded a coffee table, and she sat opposite to me.
"So, since you're in your last year of medical school, I'd assume you know the fundamentals of doctoring, the goal of this internship is to enhance your learning, and hopefully help you along the way to a career in sports medicine. Our clinic treats plenty of top name athletes, so you're in the right place if you want to learn anything about sports medicine." Dr. Williams said to me, with a huge smile on her face. She was obviously very proud of the clinic she had established.
We spent the next hour going through different situations I might encounter on a typical work day, basic things about the clinic, and their safety procedures. Before I knew it, I was ready to shadow Dr. Williams with her first patient of the day.
Dr Williams and I had just finished setting up a therapy room for her patient, who would be working to rehabilitate his knee, apparently. She handed me the patient chart and asked me to collect him from the waiting room, while she typed away on her computer, preparing some sort of treatment plan.
I walked led out into the waiting room to see a few people sitting in the vinyl black chairs. I looked down at the chart and called out the name, "Mr. Bozak? Dr. Williams is ready for you."
I saw a small smile to the right of the room and recognized him as the leafs newest player. He was no longer Something-Zak, according to the file his name was Tyler Bozak.
"That's me!" He said, walking over with a small limp.
"You're the leafs newest centre aren't you?" I asked, remembering the press conference from last night.
"Yeah, but I'm doing some rehab on my knee before I start playing. Wanna be in top shape for my debut, ya know." He said with a wink. He was definitely a charming guy, I could honestly see him being one of Erin's big NHL heartthrobs.
He followed me to Dr. Williams' room where she proceeded to have Tyler lay down and do some knee stretches and other exercises, and eventually let me do some with him on my own. He seemed oddly comfortable with it, given that I was a total newbie. Once the appointment was over, Dr. Williams had me walk Tyler to the receptionist so he could book daily appointments to help his knee heal even faster.
The walk to the reception desk, however, was quite interesting.
"Honestly best therapy session I've ever had for this damn knee." Tyler stated.
"Well, Dr. Williams is the top doctor for sports medicine in this area" I smiled.
"I'm not talking about Dr. Williams' work, you're pretty good yourself." Tyler said, smiling and raising one eyebrow suggestively.
"Oh, haha, thanks." I smiled nervously before leaving him at the front desk.
"Hey, I hope to see ya around!" He said, as I quickly darted into the hallway, back to Dr.Williams, office, not allowing him to see the blush forming on my cheeks.
Was he flirting with me? Usually guys don't ever make me feel nervous. No way an NHL player would be flirting with a loser like me. I quickly shook it off and proceeded on with my day alongside Dr Williams, treating various patients, all in need of different treatment. Needless to say my day was never dull.
Love it :)
