These Doors Have Keys

You Could Even Heal Me

Chelsea had finally talked Brent into going home, telling him he didn’t need to be with her every minute of every day, and as much as she loved the fact that he wanted to be there for him, she knew that he wasn’t comfortable sleeping in a chair at her bedside. The chemotherapy had once again made her sick, and no one was telling her the results of her blood tests yet, which was starting to scare her. They were making her stay in the hospital another night, and they told her that she might be able to go home the following day.

Brent had gone home at Chelsea’s request and he was currently sitting in his kitchen, eating a bowl of cereal when he heard the doorbell ring. He stood up and opened the door, his jaw dropping when he saw who was on the other side.

There was a girl that looked identical to Chelsea, minus the fact that her hair was a dark brown. Yes, he knew that Taryn and Chelsea were twins, but he never knew they were identical twins. “Well, are you just going to stand there or are you going to let me in?” Taryn asked rudely, and Brent immediately knew that the only similarities between Chelsea and Taryn were their looks.

“Sorry,” Brent apologized, moving aside to let her in, still staring at her, surprised at how much she really looked like Chelsea. “I thought you were coming tomorrow, though,” he said. “I bought you a plane ticket for tomorrow,” he recalled.

“Yeah, and I traded that in for a ticket for today. I hope you can get a hotel room for me for tonight. Though, I wouldn’t mind staying here with you tonight,” she said suggestively, putting her hand on his chest. “I never could have imagined that Chelsea could get a guy that’s as good looking as you. How did she manage that, by the way?” she asked, taking a step closer towards him.

Brent took a step away from her, pushing her hand off of him. “I love Chelsea,” he informed Taryn. “She’s everything I could ever ask for. And, I can get you a hotel room for tonight. You’re not staying here,” he said.

Taryn looked at him surprised but quickly let that feeling disappear. “You look familiar,” she spoke out loud. “Where have I seen you before?” she asked.

“I’m a hockey player for the Chicago Blackhawks,” he answered, figuring she would still have no idea who he was. She didn’t exactly seem like a die-hard hockey fan or anything.

“That’s it!” Taryn exclaimed, snapping her fingers, and Brent’s eyes widened in surprise. “I’ve seen you when you came to LA to play the Kings. I have seats right behind the bench,” she explained. “I have to say, I thought you were awfully sexy out there on the ice, too,” she said with a smirk.

“And, do I need to repeat that I am completely in love with you sister?” Brent asked.

“Are we back to her?” Taryn asked, annoyed.

“That is why you came here,” he reminded her. “To help Chelsea.”

“I never said I was going to help her,” Taryn told him. “I wanted you to shut up so I agreed to come. Plus, who says no to a free trip to Chicago?” she asked. “I came here for you, not Chelsea. And, let me say, you haven’t disappointed me yet,” she said with a smirk.

Brent rolled his eyes. “Let’s just talk about Chelsea,” he said. “She’s the only reason why I called you.”

“That’s another thing,” Taryn said. “Why did you call me after all? Why couldn’t she pick up the phone and call me?” she questioned. “Is she too sick?” she asked in a baby voice, obviously not caring about her sister’s health at all.

“She doesn’t know you’re here,” Brent admitted.

Taryn’s eyes widened. “Really?” she asked, a smile creeping across her face. “You claim that you love her and blah, blah, blah. And, yet, you’re keeping secrets from her? I don’t think this relationship has much potential if you’re keeping things like this from her.”

“Chelsea and I have been together for nearly two years,” Brent informed her.

“And, how long have you been lying to her?”

“Listen,” Brent began impatiently as a knock on the door interrupted him. “Excuse me,” he told Taryn, walking over to answer the door, seeing Patrick on the other side. “Hey, Sharpie,” he said. “What’s up?” he asked, letting his teammate in.

Patrick opened his mouth to answer him before he saw Taryn, and his jaw dropped. “Chelsea, new hair?” he asked her, and Taryn turned around, a scowl on her face. “Wait a minute. I thought you were supposed to be getting chemo today,” he said, looking between Taryn and Brent.

“This isn’t Chelsea,” Brent informed him.

“What?” Patrick asked, confused.

“This is her twin sister, Taryn. Taryn, this is one of my teammates, and a good friend of both mine and Chelsea’s, Patrick Sharp,” Brent quickly introduced the two of them.

“Twin?” Patrick asked in shock. “I didn’t even know Chelsea had a sister, let alone a twin!”

“That’s because we don’t exist to each other,” Taryn told him.

“What?” Patrick asked, confused by her statement.

“Chelsea and I don’t talk, and we haven’t in over ten years. We pretend the other one doesn’t exist,” Taryn explained. “And, what the hell is up with Chelsea having a lot of hot guys around her?” Taryn asked, looking Patrick up and down. “Are you single?” she asked him.

“No,” Patrick said flatly. “I’m actually engaged,” he added.

“Damn, that’s a shame,” Taryn muttered. “Anyways, Brent, can you call the hotel and make sure they can have my room ready in the next half an hour. I want to head over there. Unless you’ve changed your mind and want me to stay here.”

“I’ll call the hotel, but I thought we could go over to the hospital and see Chelsea,” Brent told her.

“You actually think I want to see Chelsea?” Taryn questioned, and Patrick looked over at her in shock. “Like I already told you, I came here because you asked me to, and it was a free trip to Chicago. I didn’t come here for Chelsea, and I wouldn’t get your expectations up. There’s next to no chance that I’m going to give her my bone marrow,” she continued, and Patrick looked over at Brent, confused. He didn’t know anything about a bone marrow transplant. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’d like to go to the hotel. Can you call them?” she asked.

“I’ll call them now,” Brent said through gritted teeth, trying not to lose his cool.

“Thanks,” Taryn said, eyeing him. “I’ll just call a taxi. Which hotel are you getting me a room at?” she asked him.

“The Hilton,” Brent answered.

“Okay. I’ll talk to you later,” she told him, putting her hand on his chest once again. Brent promptly pushed it off as she walked out the door. “Bye, boys,” she called after them.

After Brent got off the phone with the Hilton, explaining that Taryn had come to town early and begging them to have a room ready for her when she got there, Patrick stared at him, waiting on him to explain the situation at hand. “What?” Brent asked when he saw that Patrick continued to look at him.

“I don’t even know where to begin,” Patrick told him. “The fact that Chelsea has a twin sister, that you’re talking about a bone marrow transplant, or that Chelsea’s sister is the exact opposite of her.”

“Let’s start with the bone marrow transplant. It’ll help you to understand everything else,” Brent told him, and Patrick nodded. “Chelsea’s doctor has been talking about a bone marrow transplant, saying that if the chemo doesn’t cure the cancer that she might need to have one. They say that the best option for a donor is a blood sibling. That’s where Taryn comes into play. She’s the only sibling of Chelsea, but she and Chels haven’t talked in over ten years. Chelsea didn’t even want to call her and explain that she has cancer. So, I went behind her back and called Taryn myself.”

“Okay, so you said that Chelsea and Taryn haven’t talked in ten years. What’s up with that?” Patrick asked.

“I don’t know the whole story,” Brent admitted. “Chelsea’s never been very open about that. I did know that she had a twin, and that they stopped talking after their parents divorced and Chels went to live with their mom and Taryn went to live with their dad. But, I don’t know what happened or what caused the big falling out.”

“And, seriously, how different is Taryn than Chelsea?” Patrick asked.

“I know!” Brent told him. “Besides their looks they seem to have nothing in common.”

“Yeah, Taryn seems to be a bit of a bitch,” Patrick said bluntly.

“And, you weren’t even around her that long. You should have seen her before you came in here. She doesn’t even want to help her own sister. She knows that Chelsea has leukemia, and all she kept asking was what that had to do with her. She doesn’t even care about Chelsea. And, honestly, I can now see why Chels didn’t want to call her in the first place,” Brent told him.

“We were lucky to get the nice twin,” Patrick laughed. “But, seriously, can you imagine how different our lives would be if Taryn had been the one to start working at the rink instead of Chelsea?”

“Well, I can tell you that I wouldn’t have a girlfriend right now,” Brent told him.

“Taryn did seem awfully friendly with you,” Patrick said with a small laugh.

“Chelsea’s my world,” Brent told him. “And, if she wasn’t sick right now, then I wouldn’t have even talked to Taryn.”

“I know,” Patrick told him. “I know you love Chelsea and you’d do anything for her. I’d do the same thing if it was Abby. So, how bad is the cancer?” he asked.

“We don’t know,” Brent told him. “They’re waiting to see if the chemo will do anything, but no one knows for sure.”

“Well, I hope she beats this,” Patrick told him. “You said that you went behind her back and called Taryn?” he asked, and Brent nodded his head. “When are you going to tell her that you called her and that she’s in Chicago right now? From the way Taryn acted, I wouldn’t say that Chelsea’s going to be excited that she’s in town.”

“Chelsea’s going to kill me,” Brent told him. “I kept trying to get her to call Taryn herself, and she refused to do it. We actually got in a fight a few days ago because I kept asking her to call Taryn. I know she’s going to hate me for doing it, but I’m going to do everything in my power to make sure she has the best chance at getting better. And, if she gets pissed about it, then it’s okay as long as she’s healthy in the end.”

“Chelsea loves you,” Patrick said. “And, while I’m sure she’s going to be furious with you, she has to know that you’re doing it out of love.”

“I hope so,” Brent muttered.
