Save Me
So what do you say?
I had been back from Chicago for a couple of weeks now. But things between Geno and I weren’t back to normal quite yet. When I got to Chicago and saw the Bentley that Geno had gotten me I almost had a heart attack. He got an earful from me, that’s for sure. I had to admit the little baby Bentley car seat was adorable. I wasn’t so sure I wanted to put the baby in a Bentley. I had finally gotten my dream car, but it kind of felt like a hush gift. It had been bugging me for a week now.
“Sidney, do you think Geno got me a hush gift? Like he wants to keep us quiet.” I asked Sidney. The look that came across Sid’s face told me that I was thinking too much into his gift.
“Keeley, Geno loves you and the baby. He isn’t ashamed of you or trying to hush you up. I don’t think he would be that stupid honestly. Stop overthinking this. Now, go sit down and relax!” Sidney said shooing me towards the couch. A few minutes later he handed me a plate with apples, grapes and some cheese cubes. Since I got pregnant I was constantly craving fresh fruits and vegetables. I quickly ate what was on the plate and laid my head on Sidney’s shoulder. Sidney was watching SportsCenter, like he usually did. I knew something was wrong when they started talking about my boys in Chicago. Sidney quickly picked up the remote and was about to turn the channel when Patrick’s face appeared on the screen. I snatched the remote out of his hand and turned it up.
“Breaking news, Patrick Kane has left the game against the Panthers with an injury. We don’t know much at this time but we will update you as we learn more.” The broadcaster announced. My heart stopped and I felt like I couldn’t breathe. Patrick was hurt and I didn’t know what was wrong. I turned the channel and hoped that they would show a replay. Patrick was skating up the boards with the puck when a Panther player came out of nowhere and checked him into the board. I knew he fell awkwardly. He laid on the ice for what felt like minutes not moving. I saw their trainer come out and start talking to him. Patrick moved his feet and I breathed a sigh of relief, he wasn’t paralyzed. I felt Sidney grab my hand and give it a gentle squeeze.
“Patrick will be okay, he’s tough.” Sidney said trying to comfort me. I heard my phone beep in the kitchen, I quickly jumped off the couch and ran to retrieve it. Patrick’s face appeared.
“Patrick! Oh my god! I just saw what happened. Are you okay? You aren’t seriously hurt, are you? Oh my god, I’m going to kill that player. He better watch his back next time he’s in town. I will hurt him twice as bad as he hurt you. I swear.” Patrick’s chuckling on the other end of the line stopped me mid-sentence. Why in the world was he laughing?
“Keels, I’m okay. I have a broken collar bone but other than that no injuries. I have to have surgery. Doc is going to see if it can be done tomorrow. The sooner it gets done the better. They’re saying that I’ll be back by the playoffs.” Patrick truly sounded excited.
“Let me know when they schedule your surgery. I’ll be on the first plane out of here. I’ll take care of you until you can return to practice.” I told him. Patrick was my best friend, and I’d do anything to help him get back to the game he loves.
“Momma Kane would like that. She’s been blowing up my phone since I got hurt. I’m sure she’ll want to hop on the first plane with you. She’ll be glad I at least have you to help take care of me.” I could hear the smile in Kane’s voice.
“Don’t get used to it. I’m not staying forever.” I joked.
“I know. Look I have to go. Our trainer just walked in. I’ll text you the details on your flight and my surgery.” I could hear the disappointment in his voice. Before I could tell him that I could buy my own flight he had hung up the phone. I cussed under my breath. He would do that. Even though he never let me buy anything myself I still loved him. Though the one thing I wasn’t looking forward to was telling Geno that I was leaving for a while and I wasn’t sure exactly when I would be back.
“Sidney!” I yelled. “I need your help!” I heard something drop and Sidney run down the stairs.
“Are you okay? What’s wrong? Is the baby okay?” I couldn’t help but laugh at him. He had shaving cream on half of his face while the other half was cleanly shaven.
“I’m fine and so is the baby. I’m going to Chicago and I need help packing my bag. Patrick broke his collarbone and there isn’t anyone else that can take care of him. He needs me.” I pled with him.Sidney’s face dropped.
“You couldn’t wait until after I was done shaving to tell me this? I could have cut myself!” He said dramatically.
“Alright drama queen. Are you going to help me or not?” I asked starting to walk up the stairs.
“I’m coming.” Sid whispered in my ear, while picking me up in his arms. I let out a little surprised scream.
“Put me down before you break your back! I’m too heavy for this.” I said smacking his chest lightly. Sidney gave me his captain look and I knew to never say something like that again.
“Sidney, my flight leaves at 8 tomorrow morning. Do you think you could drop me off at the airport before you go to practice?” I asked as we were sitting on the couch watching some movie.
“Yeah, I can. Have you told Geno yet?” Sid asked taking his eyes off the television.I started to play with the chipping nail polish on my thumb.
“Keeley. Have you told Geno yet?” Sidney asked again muting the television. I groaned.
“Not yet. I don’t know how to tell him. Either way he’s going to be mad.” I said avoiding making eye contact.
“You guys might not be on the best of terms right now but he’s the father of that baby. He deserves to know where you’re going to be in case god forbid something happens to you or the baby. He doesn’t have to like that you’re going but he deserves to know.” Sidney spoke. “I’m not taking you anywhere until you tell him.” Sid turned off the tv and went upstairs.
Groaning I picked my phone up off the coffee table and sent a text to Geno.
“Are you busy? We need to talk.” I sent. Minutes later I got a reply.
“No busy. Come over?” I read his text a few times before finally replying.
“Come over to Sid’s. The front door is unlocked.” I sent back.
Five minutes later I heard the front door open. “I’m in the living room!” I yelled.
“You no leave door unlocked pretty. Bad people in world.” He said sitting on the couch next to me.
I rolled my eyes but smiled anyways. “I don’t think anyone would be smart enough to just walk into Sidney Crosby’s home. Heck I don’t think a lot of people outside of the team and administration know where he lives.” I said.
“You not know. Things happen. You be careful. What you need to talk about pretty?” Geno asked sitting on the Lazy boy across from me.
I sighed and took a deep breath. I wasn’t quite sure how he was going to take this. “Okay, well you know how Patrick got hurt today?” I waited for Geno to nod his head. After he did I continued on with my story.
“Well, he asked me if I could come to Chicago and help him for a few weeks. Jonny won’t be around much with their road trip coming up soon. Patrick will need help doing normal things after his surgery. I told him I would go. My plane leaves tomorrow morning.” After I finished I had to catch my breath, I was talking at hyper speed.
Geno stayed quiet. Both of us just looking into each other’s eyes.
“If you want do it, I’ll support you. I not happy about it but if make you happy then I’m happy.” Geno finally spoke. I smiled.
“I have one question. Can I take to airport?” Geno sheepishly asked, his eyes on the hardwood floor.
“Of course! Why don’t you just stay the night here? I’m sure Sid won’t mind.” Before Geno could tell me to double check with Sidney, I told him I would make sure it was okay. I climbed the stairs and knocked on Sid’s door. I heard him yell come in.
“So I told G. He’s actually sitting in the recliner in the living room.” I told Sid, sitting down on his bed. He nodded his head in response.
“He wants to take me to the airport in the morning, but I was kind of hoping that you would be okay with him staying here tonight. It’s already almost one. It doesn’t really make sense for him to go home and come back.” I was playing with the nail polish on my fingers, afraid of what Sidney would say.
“So Sid, what do you say? Can he stay?” I asked finally looking at him.
