Prove Me Wrong.

'Kieran's POV'

With the impending test date coming up for both Lauren and I we had set a date to get together and study, as well as catch up. The guys were on yet another roadtrip so I took one myself, bringing Marshal and I to Arlington to see my girl. Setting up camp in Lauren's loft apartment we had bottles of wine, pizza on the way and enough medical books to build a library around.

What a fun night for a couple of twenty something's right? We ate the pizza, danced around in our socks to music that was far too cheesy, and played with Marshall and for the most part we did get a lot of studying done. But Lauren, being my best friend also wanted to know everything about my relationship. How it was going, where it was going, if I was happy. The kicker of all questions was "How is he handling all of this?" she asked gesturing to the mountain of books.

It took me a minute to decide how to answer, because well Jamie played it off like it didn’t bother him. But if I really thought about it I guess I could see that he wasn’t exactly enjoying my intense studying. "Uhh, I think he's okay.." I started swishing the wine around in my glass, the red liquid swirling like a tornado "I mean I'm sure he wishes I wasn’t so preoccupied but, he's not complaining. At least not to me." She nodded, but I could see it in her face she was thinking about Ryan, and hoping that Jamie didn’t turn into him. And frankly I hoped for the same thing, but he had promised.

Getting back into our books we quizzed each other, knowing the oral exam was going to be the most difficult part of the boards. Talking in hilariously proper voices with cheesy British accents, we questioned each other back and forth, Dr. Ashbie versus Dr. O'Reilly. We were in the zone until my phone rang with a FaceTime request from Jamie. "Take it," Lauren demanded and I answered, "Hey babe!"

He smiled on the other end but he wasn’t alone, behind him stood Tyler and Cody "Hey beautiful, how's the studying?" "Ehh, it's going.. Hey guys," I waved to the two men behind my boyfriend. Lauren came over to look at the screen, her lips curling into a smile when she saw Cody. I wondered if there was still something going on there after New Year's, "Hey Cody, Ty long time no see." Cody's face blushed. After a group conversation the guys had to go, it was dinner time in California. "Get back to the books babe, I'll text you later." I smiled at Jamie through the screen, "Eye-eye captain, I love you." He shook his head, "Love you too, bye." I blew him a kiss and ended the call.

Putting the phone down I turned back to Lauren who was typing away furiously on her iPhone, "Cody?" I asked and she grinned. Picking up a pen and book off the coffee table, I got back to work humming along to the music in my head.

Two bottles of wine and a whole season of Sons of Anarchy later it was 2 am and Lauren and I were laying in her bed with Marshall at our feet. Both of us tired but fighting it, enjoying the time we had together staring at the ceiling tiles contemplating our futures. "What if we don’t pass?" I asked and Lauren shushed me, "Don't talk about it, we're going to ace this and be the hottest doctors ever." I wished I could be as optimistic as Lauren but I was always this way, I saw the bad in everything. We evened each other out, I was the dark and she was the light, we needed each other to function.

"What are you going to do while Jamie's in Canada?" Lauren questioned, and I had no clue how to answer her. I hadn't thought much about how long Jamie was going to be gone, depending on if they made playoffs or not he could be gone from May to September. Rolling onto my side I looked at my best friend, "I don't know, all I know is when I get back from Ireland we're getting the puppy, well I am.. I know he'll be back in Canada by the time I get back." She sat up, "So you're going to spend 5 months away from each other? That's not healthy Kier.."

She was right, Jamie and I needed to talk about how this whole summer thing was going to work. When I returned from Ireland I would either be going to work full time at the clinic or be on the hunt for a job somewhere between Dallas and Ft. Worth. I wouldn’t be a college student anymore, I'd officially be a doctor with a career that needed to grow. Laying back on the pillow I stared at the white ceiling once more, "I guess I need to talk to him, I can't just run off to Canada for the summer. My job doesn’t stop like his." Lauren turned the bedside lamp off, and snuggled into the blankets "Don't think about it right now Kier, go to sleep." If only it were that easy, but nothing about this life is easy. Life throws you curveballs when you're not expecting them.
