Long Way Home
Dallas
Sara POV
Leaving Montreal leaves me with a mixture of emotions, everything happened so fast that it’s hard to register. I was teaching a class at my dance school and everything was perfect and now. almost overnight everything went downhill and I was on a plane headed to Dallas.
I watched the flight attendant prep the plane for takeoff I couldn't help but think that maybe it was a bad idea. Maybe running away wasn't the best solution; maybe it wasn't my only one. I couldn't turn back now though, Holly was expecting me and I couldn't let her down, not again at least.
Holly POV
"What time did you say her flight landed at again?" Jamie asked as he drove through the streets of Dallas.
"Umm I think 1:30,” I said while trying to find the email with the flight information.
"Do we know anything?" Jamie asked softly knowing it was a touchy subject.
"Nothing new" I answer and turn to look at him. After so many years together I would have thought he wouldn't take my breath away anymore but he still managed to give me butterflies
"Makes no sense to me babe" Jamie said and I know he's worried about how this will affect me.
"She's like a sister" I answer as if that was enough of an explanation. Jamie says nothing more but I know he's just biting his tongue. He grabbed my hand and starts to massage small circles, it's a silent way that he lets me know that he's worried.
“She calls in the middle of the night after disappearing for almost 2 years and the next day she’s on a plane coming to Dallas? Something weird is happening.”
The rest of the ride is quiet until we pull into the parking lot of the airport.
"You don't have to come in,” I say as I unbuckle myself.
"Who else is going to carry all the luggage?" He laughs but I know he just wants to come for support.
We walk together hand in hand quietly. Jamie pulls down his cap but it doesn't stop him from being asked for pictures and autographs.
We finally arrive in the waiting area and that's when it hits me.
"Is this a bad idea" I turn to look at Jamie. I can tell he's not sure what to say because there's a tenseness in his jaw, he's holding back something.
"Who knows?" He said with a forced shrug "sometimes we have to make mistakes for family though" he added as an afterthought.
“I know but with your season coming up I didn’t think of the stress this might put on you” the panic started to set it, I could lose control so easily in this situation and that scared me more than anything.
“Babe it’s too late now to change anything her flight just landed. Don’t worry about it okay, we’ll deal with it together.” Jamie answers as he brings my hand to his mouth where he places a kiss.
Sara POV
I can see Holly bouncing on her feet in the arrival section of the airport. Jamie is behind her with the front of his cap pulled down, his frame appearing so much larger behind Holly’s petite one. She spots me and before I know it she’s running. It’s like we were kids again, running to each other as if we hadn’t seen each other in years except this time we really hadn’t.
“Sara!” I’m so glad you’re here,” she says before wrapping her arms around me.
“Me too” I laugh as I let her get her hug out of the way. She was always one for hugs.
“Welcome to Texas” Jamie says and like the gentleman he always was, takes my bag from me and swings it onto his shoulder. It then that I notice the sleeve tattoo poking out from under his shirt.
“That’s new,” I say. I had been a long time since I had seen either of them. Holly moved to Dallas when we graduated university to live with Jamie and I hadn’t seen my best friend since the wedding.
“It’s Tyler” Holly said, as if that was a useful enough explanation. We start walking back towards the parking lot getting stopped a few times along the way. I watched as Holly smiled at every fan that stopped Jamie, volunteering to take pictures for all who noticed the team captain.
“Does this happen often?” I asked Holly as we watched Jamie chit chat with two younger boys.
“Yeah” she said with a smile.
“Ever get annoyed of it?” I asked knowing I probably wouldn’t be able to do it.
“Some days it’s hard but it’s his job and it means a lot to his fans so it’s worth it in the end” she said and did something unexpected. She grabbed my hand and gave it a light squeeze. I know why she did it but it unsettled me just a little. How could I be lying to someone who loved me unconditionally? I hesitated for a moment before squeezing her hand back, causing a small to spread across her lips.
The ride was quiet, Jamie and Holly breaking it occasionally to ask questions.
“How’s everyone at home?” Holly asks and it hadn’t occurred to me till then that she probably misses everyone.
“Everyone’s great” I lied, I hadn’t seen anyone in months “Andrew finally got that job working for the Habs marketing team.”
“Oh I’m so happy for him, he must be really excited. I won’t lie I love the American Airlines Center and the Stars but I miss the Bell Center and Montreal sometimes” Holly says with a smile.
“Still haven’t converted?” I ask genuinely surprised that she hasn’t let go of her home team yet.
“Oh no” Jamie laughs “Last time the Habs came down she was wearing her Prust shirt under my Jersey, she thought I didn’t see it.” Jamie answers with a grin.
“Yeah lets just say the guys weren’t too happy about it” Holly laughs “It’s different here though, like the hockey culture. Its not worse or anything but it’s different in comparison to the overwhelming dedication of Montreal”.
“The Bell Center is special though” Jamie agrees, “are you a hockey fan Sara?”
“Not really, I used to watch it with Holly but when she left it was hard to keep up” I said not realizing my words. There was an awkward silence that filled the car. Holly never left; I was the one who ran away.
