Overtime
Chapter Seven
Once Emma and I had gone through a few runs on the half pipe, we decided that we were ready to compete in tomorrow’s, and our final, event. My plan for the night was to just curl up in my bed and watch TV, so that I was completely rested and prepared for tomorrow, but all that changed when Emma and I entered my room to find an envelope on the ground. I walked in before Emma, and picked up the envelope, which she peered over my shoulder to read.
Abbey,
Don’t think I forgot. Game’s at 8, hopefully you can come and it won’t keep you up too late! ;)
Jamie
I opened the envelope to find two tickets for tonight’s hockey game against Norway. I totally forgot that Jamie had asked me to go to the game last night. I guess I could make time to go, but I really did need the sleep. My thoughts were quickly interrupted with Emma jumping up and down.
“Abbey don’t you dare say no. We’re going; our event is at four tomorrow, it’s fine to go.” She said, grabbing the tickets from me and flopping on her stomach onto my bed.
“But I need slee-” I began.
“No, Abbey. FUCK your weird sleeping schedule. How often does the cutest”
“I know, the cutest player in the NHL, blah, blah blah.” I laughed, sitting on the corner of the bed beside her.
“I don’t care; if you don’t go then I’ll go and snatch him up.” Emma joked. Although she was joking, it made me feel something. Jamie wasn’t mine per-se but I still felt he was, well, mine.
It was settled, Emma and I were going to the game tonight. I’d just make sure to get to bed immediately and hope to god that the hockey players beside me either lost and were quiet, or at the very least didn’t celebrate their win at Jamie’s. With my luck, they’d be winning and partying loud and clear just inches from my bed. Forget what the media was reporting about the hotel rooms not being in working order and stuff- these guys were probably way worse than a broken toilet.
Emma went back to her hotel room to get ready, around 6:00 and we decided to meet back up at mine before heading to the game. I showered, let my hair air dry to give it natural waves, and only put a bit of mascara on. What are you even supposed to look like going to a hockey game?
With a towel wrapped around myself, I opened the wooden dresser drawer beside my bed and searched for something to wear. Deciding that a simple pair of black skinny jeans would be fine, I slipped into them and before I could even find a shirt I heard Emma’s rapid knocks against my door.
“Abbey you better not be dressed yet!” She yelled.
“That’s a bit awkward Em, but come in!” I yelled back, and quickly put a white v-neck on, before Emma opened the door.
“I saw the guys leaving for the rink and Jamie asked if we were going to the game and I said yes so he gave me this.” She said quickly, handing me a red Team Canada jersey.
“Did he give you one?” I asked, laying the jersey on my bed.
“No, he said he had one lying around and to give it to you.” Even though it was probably one of the generic sports store ones, it still proved my suspicions from earlier- Jamie was definitely gushing about me.
After quickly throwing the jersey on, we were ready to go. Emma was wearing a black Canada sweater with the letters in red and gold, with her blonde hair pulled into a ponytail. We were on our way out the door, when I decided to put on a Canada beanie to match the jersey. Looking in the mirror behind the door, I pulled my hair forward so that it all fell on my chest. That was when I heard giggling coming from Emma behind me.
“What, do I look bad? Should I not wear the beanie?” I worried.
“No, but did you read the name on the back?” Emma questioned.
I turned around in the mirror and glanced at the back of the jersey, which read BENN in bold letters. Obviously he didn’t just have this lying around. This was thought out. I couldn’t help but crack a smile at the dorky Jamie Benn, who had given me one of his jerseys to wear to the game. Breaking me out of my daze was Emma’s squeal.
“Oh my god, Abbey!” She yelled, “That’s so adorable. You’re basically married now I think.”
“Oh jeez.” I laughed, walking out of the room, with a sense of pride in my Benn jersey, and a touch of excitement, as this would be my first official time seeing a hockey game in person.
Jamie POV
I skated around the rink for warm-ups; I focused on my skating and shooting but occasionally looked into the crowd, trying to spot Abbey. I knew her seats were right against the glass, but I wasn’t sure exactly where. After a few laps, I finally spotted her, standing up hands on the glass, with a huge smile on her face. She waved when our eyes met and I smiled back, before circling around and taking a shot at Carey Price, which he stopped. Good sign for him, bad for me. Hopefully I’d be able to get an assist at the very least in this game; being completely honest, to impress Abbey.
The horn sounded, signalling the start of the first period. There were some scoring chances, but ultimately nothing went in, on either end. It was during the second period where things finally started to pick up. Shea Weber opened the scoring six minutes in, and the Canadians in the crowd went wild. The energy was insane, and I wanted to get my own taste of that, which followed about ten minutes later when I scored the second goal of the game.
I received the pass from Patrice Bergeron and saw my chance to shoot. The puck beat Norway’s goalie and once again the Canadians in the crowd went insane. As I was skating to the bench to celebrate, I passed by Abbey and screamed something to the extent of “that one’s for you, babe.” Something I’ve honestly wanted to always do. Laughing at myself I got off the ice and took a seat on the bench beside my line mates. The rest of the game went smoothly, with Doughty scoring in the third, and Price only letting in one from Norway to give us a 3-1 win.
After the game, a few of the guys were going out to celebrate the win, and in any other game of the season I would go out with them, but I thought about what Abbey said; how getting sleep helped, and I decided to call it a night. This was a surprise for a lot of the guys, who were amazed that I could play so well with a hangover, but I thought that I’d see how well I could play when I felt like a million bucks. Not like I was losing anything throwing the towel in early, right?
Abbey POV
“That one’s for you babe!” Jamie yelled, after scoring Canada’s second goal of the night and pointing directly at me.
“Oh god. Emma why? Why is he such a dork?” I said, pulling my beanie over my eyes. People were trying to figure out who he pointed at and the giant letters reading BENN on my back kind of gave it away, which made me even more embarrassed.
“Abbey that’s so cute. So many girls would kill to be in your position right now!” Emma gushed.
“Well, I’ll trade with any of them.” I said laughing.
Okay, Emma was right. That actually was pretty adorable of him. I mean; the first guy to actually like me and he scored a goal for me? I could live with that. Emma and I stayed for the remainder of the game, and were relieved when Canada secured the win. Even though this was only preliminary, it was one step closer for Jamie to get to gold, which I knew he wanted, no matter how humble they were all being in their postgame interviews.
Upon returning to my hotel room, I was relieved and confused to hear silence. No hockey parties after the big win, hosted in Jamie’s room? Strange, but I’ll take it. I really did need as deep of a sleep as I could get. I threw my jersey onto the dresser and quickly changed into a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt to sleep in, and got comfortable in my bed, ready to drift off to sleep. Or so I thought.
As soon as my head hit the pillow it started racing with thoughts of what Jamie said on the ice. He called you babe that means he reallllyyyy likes you. It must have just slipped out; I mean he’s known me for what? A week? Yeah but even you said he made you feel special. What do I know? I’ve never even really had a boyfriend. My mind kept me up until I decided to confront Jamie, for yet another night. I knocked and the door was opened quickly by a shirtless Jamie in basketball shorts.
“Okay, I don’t even have the TV on is my breathing too loud?” He joked.
“No, no not that. Can I come in?” I asked. Jamie more than happily agreed, and lead me into the room. He sat on the end of his bed and I joined him.
I played with my hair, twirling it between my fingers. I don’t know why I was so nervous to talk to Jamie about what he was looking for out of the two of us. No one ever made me shy, hell; he never made me shy before. Was I actually having feelings towards him?
“Thanks for coming to the game tonight.” Jamie said, trying to break the awkward silence that had formed between us.
“Okay yeah about that,” I began, “what you said on the ice to me after your goal what like… what was that?”
“What did I even- oh after I scored the goal? I don’t know I saw you in the crowd and then scored you helped me score, what about it?” Jamie asked, confused.
“No, not that. You added the babe part. Do we have like… a thing?” I asked, looking away from Jamie, picking at my nail polish.
“I don’t know do you want us to have a thing?” He questioned.
“We could. But like, it would never work after the Olympics…I mean you live in Dallas and I live in Montreal.” I said, still looking down.
“How about it’s just a thing until the end of the games, then?” Jamie smiled.
“Okay. I like that idea.” I began to get up, and head for the door, when Jamie stopped me.
“Wait, we’re having a thing. We’re going to be a thing right now.” He said, getting into bed, “I’m going to make sure you get a good night’s sleep and don’t worry your little head before your competition tomorrow.” He patted the pillow to the right of him, and I smiled, turning away from the door and getting into bed with Jamie.
“Keep this attitude up, and I’ll keep my promise from our kiss last night up.” I teased.
“You better. I blew off the entire men’s hockey team just to have it quiet here.”
“What a gent.” I laughed, before giving Jamie a quick kiss, and resting my head on his chest, falling asleep to his steady heartbeat. Needless to say, I was very well rested for my event.
