Chapter 34

Christmas Eve at Grandma Reeves was not something to be reckoned with, and this year was no exception. That meant people everywhere, people scattered in the living, people running around the kitchen, even people on the computers in the back room and I loved my family but don’t get me wrong at this point I just needed a minute alone.
So that is how I found myself in my Grandma’s bedroom with the door closed and my phone in hand. Nearly 2 dozen people filled this house yet the only person I wanted to talk to wasn’t here. That was stupid, right. 962 miles away and that boy was still the only thing I could think about.
Yet as temped as I was to call him I knew I couldn’t do that because he was with his family and he deserved time alone with them, plus I could go one day without talking to Tyler. It wasn’t going to be the end of the world, or so I told myself.
A knock at the door pulled me from my thoughts. My head snapped up as the door opened and Breanna stuck her head in, the silence of the room broken as muffled voices filled the air.
“You know everyone’s out here…” Breanna joked as she pointed out the door.
“Yea,” I cleared my throat not having used my voice in a while. “I know, I just need some time alone.”
Breanna didn’t say anything as she closed the door behind her and sat next to me on the bed.
She broke the silence a couple second later, “Are you okay Brittany?”
“I’m fine,” I took a deep breath, “why do you ask?”
“Because you’ve been kind of zombie like.”
I nodded because I knew what she meant. It wasn’t the first time I ‘zombied out’ like Breanna calls it, but at the same time I didn’t really feel depressed just a little… lonely.
“That person you were talking too yesterday, it was a boyfriend, wasn’t it.” She didn’t look at me as she spoke just stare at her reflection in the mirror that my grandma had on the back of her door. “Or a boy you really liked?”
“Why would you say that?” I tried to disguise that fact that she was right with a laugh.
“Because I heard you on the phone last night…”
“You heard me on the phone last night.” My heart pounded in my chest, because I wasn’t sure if Tyler and I were at that stage, the stage were we tell are family.
“Not purposely.” She rubbed her hands on her pants. “I went to your room last night because I wanted to hang out but I heard you on the phone so I didn’t want to bother you.”
“What did you hear?”
“Not much,” she shrugged, “I just know you said somethings, things that I don’t think you would be talking to Tori or Vanessa about.”
“Oh.”
“Yea,” Breanna shallowed, “you know you can talk to me Brittany, I mean I know we don’t see eye to eye on everything, but you can talk to me. I promise I won’t tell anyone if you don’t want me to.”
I nodded, a lump in my throat. I knew it’s been a while since Breanna and I talked but I didn’t realize how much it hurt her. “I think I’m falling for someone Breanna.”
“Really?” Her hazel eyes widened as she turned to me.
I nodded, not sure how much I should tell her. “Really.”
“Why do you think that?” Her hazel eyes studied mine as she stared at me.
“Because I can’t stop thinking about him,” I confessed, “and I just talked to him yesterday yet I feel like I haven’t talk to him in ages and I really, really want to call him right now.”
“When you see him does your stomach do somersault and your heart go pitter patter?”
“Yea.” I confirmed as I thought about Tyler.
“Wow Brit,” Breanna laughed. “You sound like such a girl.”
“Shut up Breanna,” I slightly push her shoulder with a shake of my head, but she was right, I did sound like a girl and that was defiantly new territory for me.

Breanna and I talked a little while longer after that, until it was time for dinner. After dinner presents were opened and not soon after that everyone said there good – byes and it wasn’t too long after that I found myself lying in the bed at my Aunt’s house.
I wrapped my arms around one of the fluffy pillows on the bed, it wasn’t Tyler, but I could at least pretend it was and with that thought I drifted off to sleep.

I rolled on to my stomach and my eyes fluttered open as the yellow glow of the sun streamed through the high windows. I groaned and squeezed my eyes shut again as I wrapped my arms tighter around the pillow under me. Yet no matter how much I tried I knew I wasn’t going to be able to go back to sleep.
I sighed as I opened my eyes and glanced at my phone that lie on the night stand next to me. The green LED light flashed indicating that I had a message. I yawned as I reached for my phone, turned it on and smiled to myself as Tyler’s name popped up on my screen, one missed call and one text message.
I shook my head, because did he really expect me to be up before 10 if I didn’t have to be, as I opened the text message. Merry Christmas Brittany.
I smiled to myself as I typed out a message in reply. Merry Christmas Tyler.
There was a knock at the door before Breanna poked her head in. “Mom wanted me to come and see if you were up yet.”
“Well I am.”
“Good, well we have breakfast ready and then presents to open,” she cheered, “so in other words hurry up.”
“Okay, okay, I’m coming.” I assured her as she shut the door with a roll of her eyes and with one last glance at my phone I got out of bed.
