The Friend Zone

chapter one - intro

"Special delivery!" I called, knocking loudly on my next door neighbours door. I heard feet shuffling to the door, pausing for a brief moment. "I know you're there, I can hear you" I added with a laugh. I heard a soft chuckle before the door flung open, revealing my well dressed, handsome best friend.

"So what's the special delivery?" He asked, a coy smile playing on his lips.

"Me, obviously" I replied, as if the answer was obvious.

"Meh, I'm okay, thanks though" he shrugged, pretending to close the door.

"Wow ouch- love you too Benn" I rolled my eyes.

"Can't take the heat get out of the kitchen" he shrugged, stepping to the side to allow me entrance to his condo. I stepped inside, hearing the vague buzz of television in the background; Tyler must be here,

"I'm not in a kitchen though" I retorted, it being the best comeback I could think of on the spot. I slipped off my shoes, making myself at home immediately heading towards where I could hear the television.

"Wow Hales. Have I ever like, told you how clever you are?" He asked in a fake girly voice, following me into the living room.

"Like, no you haven't" I answered back in the same fake voice. "Sup Ty" I added, acknowledging the other man in the condo. "Nice to see you too" I grumbled when he just waved me off, eyes fixated on the TV set.

"This game is really important" Jamie informed me, taking the seat next to me on the couch. It was late in the season; the second week of April to be exact. Points were few and far to come by, the Stars hanging on to the final wildcard spot in the Western Conference. With the LA Kings losing the game currently being played, it meant there was no way any team could catch them in the playoff run; they'd squeak in. The Kings were playing their final game of the season tonight; the Stars having played their last game until last night. They sat one point up of the Kings; it was all dependant on this game.

I was fairly confident; the Kings were facing rivals Chicago Blackhawks, who even with a loss would be the President's Trophy winners. Having only one previous playoff appearance, making it was a big deal to Jamie. I knew Tyler had already won a cup; a luxury Jamie didn't have.

"It hasn't even started yet" I reasoned, wondering why Tyler was so fixated on the channel he was watching; sportsnet. "Puck drop isn't for another half hour"

"Important playoff stuff; you wouldn't understand" Tyler muttered, not tearing his gaze away from the tv as he spoke. I rolled my eyes at him, turning to Jamie.

"Whatever. How was the road trip?" I asked curiously. They had wrapped up their final road trip of the season on a high note; going 4-0-1. Thanks to the amazing play of their goaltender, they made it through their toughest games of the season. And if all went well tonight, they would build off their amazing road trip in the first round of the post season.

"Stressful as hell" Jamie answered honestly, rubbing the back of his neck. He wore a tight white shirt that exemplified just how in shape and attractive he really was. Although we were just friends, I couldn't help but feel a major attraction towards him. Of course I had no other intentions; no harm in looking, right? "Thank god Kari kept is on it" he sighed heavily.

"I know that look" I scolded, recognizing the look he bore instantly.

"I didn't really play to my full potential; in any of the games" he mumbled, eyes focused on the ground.

"What logic do you have for that? I'm listening" I arched an eyebrow, waiting for him to continue. I was a major hockey fan; I watched every game. I sat in front of my TV, Benn jersey on, beer in hand. I didn't solely focus on him, but certainly did not notice Any poor performing on his part.

"Didn't you see that terrible pass I made that lead to the first goal in the game against the Sharks?" He asked knowing I'd know exactly what he was referring to.

"So because of that one pass you didn't play well the whole road trip?"

"Well-"

"This isn't am argument you're going to win, Jamie" I told him simply.

"Why not?" He asked with curiosity.

"As I woman I'm always right" I shrugged, having no valid reasoning to be right.

"That is the stupidest reason I've ever heard" Jamie scoffed, folding his arms across his chest.

"Doesn't matter, I'm still right" I smirked. I looked over to Tyler, noticing he was smirking in our direction. "Right Ty?" Getting the two of them going was a past time of mine.

"Yeah, whatever" he brushed me off, not wanting to get involved. "Did either of you order pizza? I'm starving" he finally peeled his eyes away from the tv long enough to face us, just as the show he was watching so intently went to commercials.

"Do I look stupid?" I asked immediately regretting it. "And no, I wasn't asking you to answer that" I hurriedly added just as Tyler opened his mouth. "And wings. So you better have beer"

"Erm-"

"You dipshits, you had one job" I cut Jamie off, shaking my head in disappointment. "The game starts in twenty minutes I guess you better get your ass to the liquor store" I scolded.

"This is an important game" Tyler pouted. Ah, commence the guilt tripping.

"And your point?"

"I can't miss a single second!" Jamie protested.

"Neither can I! Don't you love us?" Tyler asked, a pleading look on his face.

"Why do I even like you guys?" I muttered to myself, getting up from the comfort of the couch and heading to the door.

Just finished reading the whole story and may I say it's one of my favorites! I loved the story and relationships between the characters! I hope some day in the future you chose to make a sequel!

So I've been reading this story from the beginning and let me just say that I really like it. This last chapter is the first time I've ever really been put off by the end. The topic of a dying or deceased parent is touchy for me because I lost my dad suddenly at a young age. From personal experience, whenever someone brings my dad up in the middle of a fight I become infuriated! It's just a BIG no-no. You don't do that, it's just a low blow. I always feel it's slightly manipulative when a person says, 'well your dad would have wanted this,' or something like that. Frankly, I wish Haley had grown a backbone and put her foot down in this situation. Like I said I do like this story, I just wish you had handled this particular scene a little differently.

I read that Chapter 36 only now, and I think you could take a inspiration from short sexual stories about players too, there are full of tumblr. I think you surely know them, but if you read some more of them, you should learn something more ;)) sorry if I am tiresome again :D
