The Friend Zone

chapter twenty-nine - game seven

Game seven of the western conference finals. With any luck, the boys would pull off a win, earning them a spot in the finals against the Montreal Canadians. I knew Jamie was nervous; he was a concentrated nervous wreck for the entire series. I really hoped for the best for him and the team; I wasn't much in any spirits to deal with a depressed and pissed off boyfriend.

Work had been hard enough as it was. Since our little run in with Derek, Erica and I kept silent about Jamie and I. As far as Derek and Jessica knew, we had broken up. That was fine by me; I didn't need either of them prying in my personal life anymore.

“I think I might throw up I'm so nervous” I told The girls with a frown. I had over Jennifer, Abbe, Erica and Jessica to watch the Stars game seven attempt to make the finals. We all were huddled around my TV with our beer and wings, ready for action.

“Sure you’re not pregnant?” Erica snickered gleefully.

“Considering how many beers I've had tonight, I'm gonna say I'm not pregnant” I chuckled back lightly. I may had overdone it on the beer. Maybe. It was only seven pm too; guess I started a little earlier. Nothing beats Saturday day drinking!

“Fair point” Erica replied with a laugh, reaching to grab one of the honey garlic wings.

“I for one don't really want to have to deal with an upset Jordie if they lose this game” Jessica muttered softly. It was no secret the Benn brothers were not exactly good at handling big losses.

“I find Tyler's really rough when they lose” Erica spoke up thoughtfully, her face instantly turning into a look of pure horror when she realized what she just confessed. Maybe she had overdone it on the beer also.

“WHEN THE FUCK DID YOU START BANGING SEGUIN!?” I shouted in surprise.

“Uh- I don't know what you mean?” She answered feebly. I shot her a dirty look; as did the other girls. We all looked towards her with anticipation; wondering why she hadn't told us until now.

“Come on, spill!” Abbé gushed.

“I didn't even know you knew him!” Jennifer piped up thoughtfully.

“Apparently they met in a really embarrassing way! But when they were about to tell us Derek came out with his stupid speech or whatever” I remembered the party night. I was still pretty curious about how the story of their first meeting went.

“So while you're explaining to us how long you've been banging Segs, let's hear how you guys met” Abbé smirked, all of us agreeing; there was no way she was getting out of telling us this one.

“We'll remember how you and Jamie met?” Erica asked, turning to me. I nodded, remembering the memory fondly. Never would I have thought spilling coffee could be the best accident of my life.

“Yeah?”

“So I was driving down Ashburn Street a few weeks ago” Erica began timidly. I wondered to myself where the hell this was going… “And I had just stopped at the Starbucks on my way to work. But stupid me picked up the coffee and dropped it, spilling scalding coffee all over the damn place” she sighed, rubbing the back of her neck with her hand.

“And where does Tyler come in?” Jessica asked, intrigued.

“I was in the middle of driving when I spilt the coffee… I ended up rear-ending him at a stop sign. Try explaining to some super hot guy ‘oh hey, I just was a complete klutz and spilled my coffee everywhere causing me to run into the back of your gorgeous car’.” She bit her lip nervously.

“You're kidding” I chuckled.

“Nope. He asked for my number, we went out for coffee a few days later and… The rest is history” she shrugged, seemingly no longer as embarrassed as she was before.

“That's hilarious. You took my story to the extreme” I couldn't help but crack a grin.

“So are you guys dating? Or…?” Jennifer asked, trailing off.

“Just banging” Erica answer nonchalantly.

“And you're okay with that?” I asked tentatively.

“I am” she answered back immediately; and I believed her. “Puck drop!” She then diverted our attention to the game; giving me the doubts she wanted to just be fuck buddies with Tyler. I'd have to ask him about it later, I thought with a smirk.

********************

“Holy fucking overtime fucking fuck” Abbé blurted out nervously. It was tied 2-2 after three periods of play, sending this series to sudden death overtime. One goal and it could be all over for the Stars season. One goal and they could be on their way to the finals. One goal.

“I'm going to seriously have anxiety this entire period” I shuddered, only half listening to the hockey analysts blubber on about who they thought were going to win. It didn't matter how much you analyzed this; in playoff hockey, anything could happen. In sudden death overtime, anything could happen; it could easily go either way.

And the puck dropped for the beginning of overtime. Typically during the game, we were loud, cheering, and yelling at the TV. Overtime brought out a different side of us. We watched in silence, holding our breaths and crossing our fingers whenever the puck was in the defensive zone.

The first ten minutes were pretty uneventful. The shots were 7-6 in favour of the Avalanche, it there were no real amazing opportunities for either side. Both goalies were playing amazing; Kari having faced 45 shots so far. Varlymov faced 39; he was exceptional as well.

“Power play!” I exploded, breaking the ten minutes of silence. We watched as Jamie, Tyler and Jason skated to take the draw. Their power play was 2/22 this series; the Avalanche penalty kill doing wonders. Typically they had a hard time getting things set up; and by the time they did, the power play was over.

Tyler won the draw back to the D, who passed it over to Jamie. He took a look around for a moment, allowing his team to get set up. The avalanche had the box set up, nervously trying to kill off the stupid penalty Nathan Mackinnon had taken selfishly. There was nothing the Stars would want more was to make him pay for taking the penalty.

Before anyone could even blink, Spezza fed a pass cross crease where Jamie tapped it in the back of the net. 3-2 final. 3-2 Stars. They were going to the Stanley Cup Finals.

“JAMIE BENN FUCKING RIGHT!” Erica stood up exploding in cheers and happiness. I suddenly felt bad for my neighbours; but this was a special occasion.

“STANLEY CUP FINALS BABY” I shouted, all of us jumping up and down. We watched with pride as the guys all tackled Jamie in happiness; they had won the game. Jamie's smile was a mile wide; he was one happy and proud captain.

The Colorado crowd was stunned into silence, the Stars fans who lingered throughout the building up on their feet, cheering with everything in them. In two days time, the Stars would be in Montreal playing game one of the Stanley Cup Finals.

Notes

Kind of a filler chapter but hey, wouldn't it be nice if they did make the Stanley cup finals!? :)

Just finished reading the whole story and may I say it's one of my favorites! I loved the story and relationships between the characters! I hope some day in the future you chose to make a sequel!

So I've been reading this story from the beginning and let me just say that I really like it. This last chapter is the first time I've ever really been put off by the end. The topic of a dying or deceased parent is touchy for me because I lost my dad suddenly at a young age. From personal experience, whenever someone brings my dad up in the middle of a fight I become infuriated! It's just a BIG no-no. You don't do that, it's just a low blow. I always feel it's slightly manipulative when a person says, 'well your dad would have wanted this,' or something like that. Frankly, I wish Haley had grown a backbone and put her foot down in this situation. Like I said I do like this story, I just wish you had handled this particular scene a little differently.

I read that Chapter 36 only now, and I think you could take a inspiration from short sexual stories about players too, there are full of tumblr. I think you surely know them, but if you read some more of them, you should learn something more ;)) sorry if I am tiresome again :D
