Arrow Hawk: Birth of the Hockey Avengers

Captain Blackhawk Saves the Day!

The Chicago Blackhawks are playing the Minnesota Wild and Patrick Kane has just scored a huge goal, beating Matt Cooke to the puck.

“JONATHAN!!” Patrick Kane screams as he backs up against the boards of the United Center’s rink. “Uh…” He gulps as he spots Matt Cooke stalking toward him, clenching his fist. He narrows his eyes at the terrified Blackhawk winger, who presses against the boards, terrified. There is a collective gasp from the crowd.

Cooke throws his arm out, letting his stick fly to the side. Patrick cringes, watching him with big sparkling blue eyes. His head is as far back as it can go. Suddenly the gloved hand grabs Patrick around the neck and shoves him back against the boards.

What the hell? Where is Jonathan? He should be kicking Cooke’s ass by now!

Patrick feels the fingers tighten and he can feel the air starting to leave his throat. He tries to instinctively push the goon away, but he knows that Cooke is twice as strong than him and also bigger. Cooke pins Patrick in place with his other hand, knocking the blond’s stick from his hands and continues to squeeze against his throat. Patrick tries to call for help, but all that comes out is forced air and squeaks.

“You shouldn’t-a pulled a move like that, Lil Peekaboo!” Cooke snarls.

Patrick closes his eyes and tries to block out Cooke’s distorted laughter and the pain coming from his throat.

Finally a welcomed thud sounds, followed instantly by a loud hawk screech. “Let Kaner go!”

Oh, thank God! Patrick thinks. He opens his eyes and spots the delightful face of a pissed off Jonathan Toews.

Cooke doesn’t let up and shoves against Patrick, causing him to feel dizzy and make his vision blur over. Jonathan stomps forward and slewfoots Cooke, sending him to the ice. He finally lets Patrick go, who gulps in air and doubles over, breathing heavily.

Cooke gasps as Jonathan begins to pummel him with fists, jumping on him. A pair of heavy-duty, dense, sharp feathery black wings protrude from his back and from his red jersey. The black wings have red tips and they are hawk-like in appearance. Jonathan’s anger continues to fuel him until he finally snaps and a cloud of smoke engulfs him.

The audience in the arena gasps. They all know about the captain’s new hero look and they are used to it, but they rarely get to see him actually transform all the way. It’s always a treat when the man changes before them.

When it clears, a small, furious black hawk flaps its wings, peaking endlessly at the goon, who shields his face and tries to stop the creature. Patrick is joined by a concerned Patrick Sharp, Brent Seabrook and Andrew Shaw.

“Wow, look at our captain go at that miserable piece of shit!” Andrew exclaims.

Jonathan continues peaking away at Cooke, who is attempting to crawl away. He is bleeding from various cuts on his face made by the black hawk. And he isn’t letting up, even when the goon starts to throw punches at the bird; and even when he starts to apologize to him.

Instead, Jonathan begins to shoot streams of fire from his beak. And his hawk cries deepen and grow more intense. He focuses on aiming the fire at Cooke, who rolls over and dodges the blasts. The fire hits on the ice and melts it in places. Water is created from the heat and so the flame is extinguished before it can spread anywhere. Steam follows, like a lake during winter.

In the background, at the benches, the refs were chatting with the coaches. They kept their distance from the fire-breathing black hawk.

Patrick massages his throat and coughs but straightens up and smiles. “He’s amazing, isn’t he?”

“Whoa! Dude, I’ve never seen Jonny THAT worked up before! He is on fire!” Andrew exclaims, looking eager and like he wants to join the black hawk and fight. Sharp sees this and he grabs Andrew’s jersey, holding him in place.

“That’s my hero!” Patrick remarks. His blue eyes sparkle some more under the arena lighting as the crowd roars with noise and begins to chant, “Jonny! Jonny!” He can’t help but smile and chuckle a little bit.

Suddenly Jonathan’s attack stops and he crashes to the ice, instantly morphing back into his human black hawk form. He lies on the ice, out cold. Cooke scrambles away from him, getting to his feet and scampers to safety at the bench, half skating, half stumbling. He is sent down the tunnel immediately, mumbling just loud enough, “Fucking Blackhawk!”

He vanishes down the tunnel and from sight. Patrick races over to Jonathan and drops down to the ice. He sits down and takes Jonathan’s head in his hands. After a few seconds, Jonathan blinks awake. He gazes up into the kind eyes of his teammate, who strokes his hair. Jonathan smiles.

“You okay, Kaner?”

“Yeah, but buddy you got to learn how to control that anger of yours. I hate when you faint in mid-air...it always scares me.” Patrick gives Jonathan a cute look.

Jonathan chuckles and sits up. He turns to Patrick and gives him a smile. “I’m fine. It’s only temporary. And Zvezda, Kelly, and Hawkley are all looking into a solution for that.” He scoots closer to Patrick, who hangs his head low on his chest.

“I just don’t like it. What if a villain kills you? You can get seriously hurt when you’re vulnerable like that.”

Jonathan lifts Patrick’s head back up and leans toward him. He presses his lips to Patrick’s and kisses him. “Better?” Jonathan questions, pulling apart after a long time.

Patrick bats his eyelashes. “Yeah.”

“Good, now come on, we have to finish this game. Luckily Cooke won’t return. And hopefully he’s learned his lesson about going after you.”

“Yeah, cause no one can mess with me, right?”

“Right! I’ll always be here to protect you, Kaner. I’ve got your back!”

“Of course, but maybe you should put those wings away now.” Patrick nods to Jonathan’s wings.

Jonathan nods. “Of course. Can’t keep ‘em out...that would be cheating.” He deactivates his wings with a tap to his watch, which he’d gotten manufactured for him by Hawley. “Alright, Peeks, let’s finish off the Wild!”

Patrick gives a shout of agreement and they skate to the bench. They sit down and the game resumes. The medical staff doesn’t check on Jonathan, because they know that he is fine. (Patrick and Jonathan tell them that he does that whenever he gets too worked up and changes. He is fine.) Coach Q questions if Patrick is okay, but Patrick tells him he’s absolutely fine. Thanks to Captain Blackhawk.
