Intrigue
Meeting the Fam
My dad gave me and Alex a huge hug before even introducing himself. “Hey, glad he brought you home and glad to see you are getting around better. You can call me Gary."
"Nice to meet you.” She said shyly, causing me to laugh.
“Ok, so you better open up quick dear because my dad is seriously the quietest out of me, my brother and mom." My dad laughed and pointed us to the car.
“So Brent tells me you aren’t the biggest Blackhawks fan.” Her face lit up.
“Nah, not really, die-hard Philadelphia fan, much to your son’s dismay. But I do wear his jersey, even when they play the Flyers. I do refuse to discuss those games with him though.” The rest of the ride was spent picking on Alex.
My dad found out she was also a big Eagles and Phillies fan and he couldn’t help but tease her. It started to snow a little and her face lit up.
“Love Canada", she said, throwing her arms around me as we got out of the car. There was already probably eight inches on the ground from before. I promptly picked her up and threw her into it in the front yard. She gasped as it soaked through her pants.
“Come on lets go in.” I said as I picked her up and carried her into the front door.
My mom literally squealed as we entered. “Brent dear, go get her some warm clothes and a towel. I really hope you didn’t wet her cast dear.“ She gave her a big hug. I just groaned. My family was laying it on thick.
They acted like I never had a girlfriend before. I looked around and didn’t see my brother. “Where is Keith?" My dad looked up.
“I’m getting him in an hour or so.” His flight doesn’t land until then. I grabbed Alex a towel and gave her some of my sweats to change into since our bags were still in the car. She went into the bathroom and my mom and dad both looked at me. “She is adorable son.” My dad commented and my mom swatted him.
“So how serious is this Brent?” she asked, her eyes full of hope I would produce a grandkid or something from my luggage.
“Jeez you two stop. You are embarrassing.” Alex came back in to the room in Blackhawks sweats and I couldn’t help but grab her and pull her onto my lap. Dressed down Alex is my favorite. She looks adorable when she is in sweats with her hair up in a pony-tail.
“So Alexa, Brent tells us you just changed jobs recently." My mom said handing her a cup of hot chocolate.
“Yea, I started out as a corporate attorney but it was such an empty job. I switched over to the District Attorney’s office. Can’t wait to get back to work actually.” I couldn’t help but snort.
“Don’t listen to her mom. She has been working from home, like nine hours a day.” She smiled at me.
“Well your son doesn’t understand I have two upcoming trials I need to work on.” I covered her mouth.
“She works way too hard mom.”
My dad cracked up and said “You two sound like you have been married for years.” My Dad got up to leave and I followed him.
I figured it would give Alex some time to get to know my mom if I left. I kissed her on the forehead. “I’ll be back in a little while.”
My mom invited her into the kitchen and my dad and I got into the truck. “So son, she seems really nice. How are things going? How is she with the schedule?” I smiled.
“Alex is great, she is busy herself so we just kind of make time to see each other, we usually stay at her place so the only time I don’t see her is when I am on the road.”
We pulled up to the airport and immediately seen my brother.
“So whats up bro, where is Alexa at? Tell me she ditched you so I can laugh.” I just grinned.
“She is back with mom.” He shook his head.
“Are you crazy, she is probably discussing wedding ideas and all with her. All three of us agreed it was probably true.
Once we got back we just sit around talking for a while discussing the seasons my brother and I were having. Alex started to yawn beside me so we said goodnight to the three of them. Tomorrow would be crazy hectic since it was Christmas Eve.
I pulled her into my room and took her hoodie and sweatpants off. She was left in a t-shirt and black lace which drove me insane. She pressed her fingers to my lips. “You better behave Mr. Seabrook. I don’t want your family getting mad at me.”
I just pulled the t-shirt over her head and grinned at her. “Alex I can’t help it if you make me want to be bad.”
The next morning I had to wake her up for breakfast. She scrambled to put on clothes. She appeared at the table in pajamas smiling. “Good morning everyone.” She said, grabbing the coffee.
We sat down and ate and everyone discussed plans for the day. We had a lot of extended family coming in for dinner. My mom was cooking all day today and us guys usually just laid around after visiting the local hospital and dropping gifts off.
The three of us made our way to the hospital. My mom was great and shopped for everything. She labeled and wrapped it so they didn’t get mixed up. The kids were so appreciative and so were the parents. Alex had a blast, playing with each kid and talking to the parents. My brother caught me staring at her. “Yo bro, don’t even. You two are way too busy for kids.” I just laughed. I agreed but she looked so cute.
I finally dropped Alex off at the house. My brother and I had a few things still to pick up for that night. She was planning on helping my mom out. We hit a few stores and pick up a few things we needed and a few gifts that we still needed to buy, then headed home.
She was in the kitchen, pulling stuff out of the oven when I got back home. “Brent you are the best. She even can cook her pretty little self. She didn’t even need direction. This is the first year it wasn’t so crazy for me.” I kissed her on the cheek and sent her off to get a shower for dinner.
My mom and I sat down at the kitchen table and drank a cup of coffee together. By the time we finished conversing, my mom was sitting at the breakfast bar, tears visibly glistening in her eyes.
