Intrigue
Working Mommy
The flashes went off as we made our way into the courtroom. Mike’s arm slid protectively around my waist as he pushed me through the crowd. Jackson Mason, II sat smirking in the front row. He fully believed he would be acquitted, and he threw me a dirty look when I sat my stuff down at the table across from his.
“How is your boyfriend Brent’s season going Alexa? I guess it has been quite eventful since that whore’s daughter was dropped into your lap. Guess your boyfriend can’t keep it in his pants. What makes you think it is different with you?” His defense attorney slammed his hands down on the table and glared at him.
I immediately let the court reporter know we had an issue I’d like to discuss with a judge. We were called into a conference before we had even gotten started. I was glad Alan was there. He had an excellent reputation with the judges in Chicago.
“Your honor, I will not stand for him harassing my lead attorney on this case. The public is already well aware of her and Mr. Seabrook’s personal life and I won’t have it brought up in a situation where it does not apply. Furthermore, the defendant shouldn’t be addressing counsel directly regardless.” The judge issued him a warning once we got back into the courtroom.
By twelve, we still had not gotten anywhere with the jury pool and I was losing my patience. “Your honor, I think we can take a lunch recess at this point since we are not getting anywhere." I said, frustration boiling over.
“Counselor, I think this is my courtroom and I will make the rules. However, I do agree, we will reconvene at one o’clock.” We left the courtroom and headed down the hall into a conference room where lunch had been laid out.
I switched my phone on and a few text messages appeared from Brent. He had seen me on tv this morning. They were playing in Detroit tonight.
“You look hot when u are all in charge. Can we play atty/witness when I get home?” the text read. It made me smile at least.
Alan patted me on the back. “Don’t worry Alexa, we will get a fair jury. You are good at what you do.”
The afternoon was a little more successful and we ended up getting four out of the six jurors we wanted assigned to the case. Alan shook my hand as we were walking out.
"Good job today. I am impressed. Four out of six is a great accomplishment for anyone." He saod and Mike winked at me.
I got home a little after six and laid around with Madison while Suzanne finished up dinner. Gary gave me a hug when I walked in. “That’s right girl, you are going to do our Seabrook name proud. All of the newscasters are talking about how much they like you. “ I grinned at him.
“That is only if I get the conviction. “ We sat down and ate the homemade ravioli. It was so nice having them around. I felt good knowing I wasn’t just leaving Madi with a babysitter.
