Intrigue

I woke up feeling like someone had beat me over the head with a ton of bricks. I was hurting, two days of drinking was killing my body. I didn’t even want to get off of the floor. My dad had really laid into me last night and I was not looking forward to running into him or Alex for that matter today. I knew I was wrong, I just didn’t know what to say to apologize. I walked down the hall quietly, hoping to sneak into Keith’s room and sleep for a few more hours.

Alex met me at the end of the hall with Madison in her arms. “Here you go Daddy. Time to work. I’ll be back on Sunday.” I looked at her dumbfounded. Was she serious? I wasn’t sure what the heck was going on.

“Umm where are you going?” I asked gently.

“On a trip with Mike. I need a break from you. I will call you on Saturday to let you know what time my flight is on Sunday.” I just nodded, still in shock. “Your dad is dropping me off at the airport now.” She kissed my cheek and walked away quietly.

Once I heard the door close and I knew they had left I went down with Madi to my mom. “Mom, I’m sick, can you watch her so I can get a shower and wake up.” My mom looked sadly at me and shook her head no. So this was the plan I guess, make me realize how much Alex does. I was annoyed, but I would survive. I put her in the pack and play and quickly showered. Ryan had called me by then and we met up for lunch. Megan of course was there.

I pushed the stroller against the wall in the restaurant, unhooked Madi and walked over towards the table they were already sitting at. Megan got up and hugged me, completely ignoring Madison.

“So do you want to hang out tonight at my place? I have the kid tonight, she is away and my parents already informed me they we going out.” They agreed and promised to bring a few friends. I reminded them that we weren’t drinking, just hanging out since I had Madi. We made plans to meet up later and they left.

I spent the day with Madison, shopping for clothes for the both of us and eating junk food. She had a blast running around the mall and was exhausted by the time we got home. I put her to bed and within minutes Ryan, Megan and a few others had arrived. We sat on the front porch and talked while the monitor buzzed in the background.

“So where did Alex go man?” I just shrugged. I wasn’t going to even stress about that tonight, I was just going to enjoy being home and relaxing with some childhood friends. About a half hour or so into our night, Madison woke up crying for her Mommy. I went in and rubbed her back for a few minutes, her drifting back off again. I snuck out of the room and Megan met me in the hallway. Pushing me against the wall she ran her lips along my neck and I shivered.

I pushed her back. “Meg, stop. I love Alex.”

She gave me that thousand watt smile. “Brent come on baby. I know you want me as much as I want you.” She said quietly in my ear as she ran her hands along my sides. My body responded , hell, what guy’s wouldn’t. She was a good looking girl and at the moment I could see the red lace bra under the v neck t-shirt she had on.

It didn’t mean I would indulge though and I walked away from her and pulled her brother aside to explain that his little sister was trying to seduce me.

They left and I was alone. My mom and dad came in not long after. “So how was your first night by yourself?” she asked and I shook my head.

“She has been asleep since eight o’clock. We are ok. She woke up once and cried for Alex. I feel like crying for Alex myself Mom. I miss her. I didn’t realize, Ryan’s sister so tried to hook up with me tonight. I wanted to punch her.” My mom laughed. “I told her she isn’t welcome back here.”

“Good Brent, I know you guys have a busy life and you and Alex don’t get a lot of time to go out, but you two are parents now. She seems to get it, you don’t. Just think in a few weeks, you will be going on a honeymoon and will enjoy some free time. I’m glad you two are using the tickets we bought you for Christmas and just adding to it.” I nodded. I understood her point.

“You have to get used to it though Brent. You two have decided to have another child, which means even less time to go out. You aren’t single anymore. Your wife shouldn’t have to deal with girls hanging on you or flirting with you. She should never have to deal with you falling asleep with someone else, no matter how innocent it may be.” I shook my head and agreed with her. “Just give her space for the weekend. She will be back” she said as she headed off to bed.

I hit the bed myself knowing Madison would be up by six o’clock if she slept straight through. About an hour or so after I fell asleep I got a drunk text from Duncan just saying “hi bro”. After that I couldn’t fall back asleep. Madi slept until seven, which provided me a few precious hours of sleep. I looked at her standing in her crib. “Come on pumpkin, ready to spend the weekend with Daddy. We need to make Mommy surprises so she don’t kick Daddy's butt.”
