All Things In Good Time

Chapter Eight

All Things in Good Time
Chapter 8

Katherine heard a knock on her door as she traced her fingers across the words on her phone. She looked at the message that Rob had sent her and she let those words sink in.

Do what makes you happy. Find Paulie and kiss him with everything you’ve got!

She slipped her phone into her wristlet and turned to open the door. She knew what she had to do as her hand gripped the door handle. She pushed the handle down and pulled the door towards her and there he was.

Paul nervously pushed the buttons on the elevator in the housing unit that Katherine was staying in. He was excited to have her in Sochi without all the regular distractions of their everyday grind with the Pens. He knew that they both had a job to do in Sochi, but he was hoping to be able to spend some time with her while they were there. After a few seconds of waiting, the elevator doors opened and Paul climb aboard the car and pushed the button for the sixth floor. Katherine’s room was easy to find with the dorm-like layout of the unit and when he came to her door, Paul ran his hands through his hair and then gave a knock on the door. He felt the same way he did on the day of their first date; nervous, excited, and ready to spend some time with a vivacious woman with fiery auburn hair and blue eyes.

When Katherine opened the door, Paul was standing in the hallway, wearing her favorite cardigan, glasses and jeans. In Katherine’s opinion, Paul always looked good, but when he wore his glasses, he looked great. His hair was a little shorter and the beard that he had been growing during the season was now non-existent. Katherine smiled as they both stood there in silence.

The first thing Paul noticed when Katherine opened the door was the bright red scarf she wore around her neck. He remembered her small addition to scarves and how he had to pull her away from a vendor down on The Strip, but only after she bought four scarves. Her pale skin and auburn hair were complemented by the scarf and he could smell the scent of her favorite perfume. She smiled at him and the only thing Paul could thing about was how much he missed Katherine.

“Welcome to Sochi,” Paul smiled at Katherine as he nervously jammed his hands into the pockets of his jeans.

Katherine was taken back to that Sunday morning when Paul picked her up at her townhouse for their first official date. He had taken her for breakfast at DeLucca’s and she helped him fill his spice cabinet at Penzey’s. They laughed, ate lobster rolls on the street corner, she bought scarves and he bought her flowers. And suddenly it hit Katherine like a ton of bricks; Paul was what made her happy.

Paul could see a change in Katherine’s eyes, a softening, but not sadness. He reached his hand out to cup her chin and she reached out and stopped his hand. Paul just looked at her and wondered what she was thinking.

“Donnell…” was all Paul could roll off of his tongue before Katherine moved closer and placed a very tender, but very longing kiss on his lips.

A flood of emotions ran through Katherine’s head. She knew Paul was the one who made her happy and why did it take her so long to realize it. Katherine pulled away from Paul, but he wasn’t letting her go far. Paul pulled her closer and placed a kiss on her forehead.

“Martin,” Katherine whispered into Paul’s shoulder. “I’m so sorry.”

“Sorry for what?” Paul wrapped his arms around Katherine.

“I’m sorry for ever leaving.” Katherine brought her hand up to Paul’s chest.

“Well, you’re here now, aren’t you?” And with that, Paul brought his lips back down to Katherine’s to give her the kiss that would hopefully tell her everything he wanted to say to her since December.
