The Same Mistake Twice

I showered quickly not wanting her to wait any longer than she had to. I felt guilty in a way. I had told Max this morning that I wasn’t looking for anything with her but even on the ice, I couldn’t take my eyes off of her.

She was following practice intently. I could read every reaction. Her face was an open book. She showed every emotion, including the happiness and relief when I finally scored in the shootout. “Don’t even bro” Sid whispered as he walked past me.

We both got dressed and he pulled me into the training room. “Jord, you can’t. As much as I am sure you want to, it will cause problems. It sucks, but you just have to deal with it. I know you always get stuck with the bad situations, I am sorry but we can’t have all this craziness again.

I just looked up, “What did he date her for like a month Sid? I mean, why does this always happen to me. I see a girl I like, someone on the team calls dibs before I can even get a chance to talk to her. If that ain’t happening, I meet girls like this who were in some BS relationship with someone I know or am close to. It isn’t fair Sid.” I realized I sounded like a two-year old at the moment, but I didn’t care.

I was annoyed and disgusted. Enough so that the minute Sid left I called Eric quickly to get his take on the situation. As much as we fought, I trusted his opinion. I listened to what he had to say and thanked him. He made a lot of sense. He told me to just hang out with her this week and then make a decision to call Max or not.

I walked down the hall and towards her. She was sitting by herself. She smiled when she seen me. “Hey, you ready for food?” We walked towards the car and she got a text message and laughed. “Ok, this guy is going to be annoying. He has texted me five times since we got off the plane.”

I just shrugged. “Shouldn’t have given a stranger your number Cal. Stranger Danger, didn’t you ever learn anything in school?” I placed my arm on her shoulder as I guided her towards my truck. She slid in and I closed the door. “So, food, relaxation, gotta think what we should do tonight too." I said.

We walked into the restaurant and fifteen or so faces turned to look at us. “Bout time Jord, Sid made us wait to order. You are lucky you got here before my stomach growled again.” Marc yelled.

I just gave him a look. I knew he was telling Max everything and it annoyed me. I got that they were friends. Vero gave me a meek smile and waved us over to sit down. Between her and Marc, they pissed me off at lunch. They must have mentioned Max about thirty times. Callee looked uncomfortable and even TK began to glare at Marc.

Finally I couldn’t handle it anymore. “Ready Cal? I asked getting up quickly from the table. I went over and let Sid know I would call him after we relaxed for a while. Sid asked if we wanted to go to his place and I just shook my head. “Dude give me credit. I’m not gonna try anything.” I said angrily and left.

She gave me a hug the minute we walked outside. “I’m sorry Jordan, maybe I shouldn’t have come. “Marc and Vero are huge Max fans huh.”

I just squeezed her tighter. “I’m sorry, I just wanted you to be able to get away for a few days. Kris invited us to his place tonight. He isn’t going to pull anything. I keep trying to tell them we are just friends. Vero, Marc and Sid thinks it’s wrong for us to get close because it is disrespecting Max.” She just groaned.

“Max has nothing to do with us.” We went back my apartment and I showed her around. She looked intently at all of the pictures I had hung. “Nap Cal?” I asked and she agreed. I threw shorts and a t-shirt at her. “Here you go. We can put on a movie if you want.” She came back from the bathroom and looked adorable. The clothes were huge of course, they made her look like a little kid. I put on one of the seasons of Entourage and laid down next to her. She curled up beside me and tucked her head into my side. I stared at her for what seemed like forever. My eyes started to closed and I pulled her tighter against me.

The phone was ringing obnoxiously off the hook. I squirmed out of bed and grabbed it off my desk. “Jared , what? I was sleeping you idiot.” He went rambling on about some nonsense.

Callee came up behind me and I let her know to get a drink and make herself comfortable. “Who is that Jord?” Jared asked.

“Her name is Callee and she is from Philly. I gotta go, I’ll call you later on or something. “ I said and hung up.

We hung out for a while before getting dressed and headed to Kris’s place. It was Callee and I, TK and his girl Victoria, Geno, Kris and Ben and three random girls they had invited over. We hung out, ate pizza, drank beer and played video games.

TK and I were currently battling it out in an ATV racing game. Callee and Kris were busy teasing us for being so into it. I looked up and she flashed me a killer smile. I had to make myself focus back on the tv. After the game it had started to get late so we left for my apartment. “I have morning skate early. I should be home by 11:30 at the latest. I’ll try not to wake you up when I leave.”

We went in and changed, her in the bathroom, me in the bedroom. She came out of the bedroom and I literally had to bite my lip from making some involuntary noise of pleasure. The worst part was she wasn’t even trying. She had pulled her hair up messily, put on a tank top and a pair of shorts.

I couldn’t stop staring at her. “Can I help you with something Jord?” she said and I laughed.

“Sorry Cal”. I slid the shirt off over my head and caught her looking in the mirror. I winked at her as I slid the sweats off and threw on a pair of basketball shorts over my boxers. She was still blushing as I crawled into bed. I kissed her on the forehead. “It is ok Cal, I think you are pretty hot yourself.”

I rolled over and tried to fall asleep. I tossed and turned for a while before finally falling asleep.

She was in the kitchen when the alarm went off, sitting at my breakfast bar sleepily drinking a cup of coffee. I walked out to the kitchen and she slid a cup towards me. I let for practice after I drank the coffee with her. At morning skate, Sid asked me how last night had gone and I explained that we hung out over Kris’s and basically were asleep before one o'clock. “Sid nothing happened.”

He smiled. “Jord, I’m not trying to be a pain.”

I just glared at him. “But you are plain and simple.” I said as I skated away.

I went home after skate and she had cooked for me. We ate in silence and she read a book while I napped. I showered once I woke up and she was sprawled out across the sofa watching tv.

“Here, wear this when you come tonight. Vero is picking you up at six o’clock ok?” She looked up and smiled. I figured it had to be some kind of luck if she wore one I wore in the Stanley Cup.

I got to the rink and stretched out listening to my ipod on full blast. I sure as hell didn’t feel like dealing with my teammates at this point. Once we made it out to the ice, I put all my frustration into my shots. I looked up towards where her and Vero were sitting and she caught my eye. She winked and I smiled.

The game went well and we won 3-2, causing almost everyone to be excited to go out to the bars. She met me outside of the locker room. “Ready to get drunk Jord?” she asked and I laughed. She handed me the folded up jersey. “Here I didn’t want it to get messed up. We are going back so I can get dressed right?” I nodded and pulled her toward the exit. “Nice goal tonight, by the way.” She said smiling.

“Thanks sweetheart.” I said back even quieter. I sat on the sofa while she did her hair and got dressed. She was only in there about twenty minutes or so before she came out. “Uh, wow….. ok Callee, that is, I mean you look good.” I stumbled out and she laughed.

She had on a pair of black tights, heels and a silver top that was revealing ample cleavage, enough to make me openly stare at her. She turned around and I felt myself twitch. She had a nice round ass and the tights were accentuating it. “Come on let’s go." I croaked out. My voice was hoarse.

We got to the club and walked back to wear my teammates were. Callee walked by Cooke and he immediately turned and threw me a thumbs up sign. She ordered two beers and handed me one. We spent the first part of the night sitting at the table drinking beer and shots of vodka with Geno.

She finally got up to stretch and grabbed my hand, “dance with me Jord” and pulled me up from my seat. We dance for a few songs, me avoiding touching her at all possible. Sid and Marc stood watching us. “Losers” I said under my breath. I was annoyed. I pulled her back to the door and we did another shot. “Callee almost two, you ready?” I asked and she readily agreed.

I got a cab sitting outside the place to take us back to my apartment. We rode in silence and she looked almost scared. “You ok Cal?” I asked as we walked into my building.

“Umm yeah, fine Jord. Just have some things on my mind.” she said. My heart dropped. I figured she started to think about Max and it was starting to bother her.

We stepped into the elevator and she looked up at me. “Jord, I want you.” She said, her eyes glaring directly into mine.
