Love that We Deserve
Change
****FLASHBACK****
February 2013
Tyler arrived home to his North End Boston apartment from playing five away games in eleven days. The Bruins won four out of five of the games. He swung open his apartment door and all the lights were turned off. He reached to his right and flicked the light on.
“SURPRISE!!!!” The sounds of his friends voices roared and caused Tyler to smirk, as he saw this coming. Tyler didn’t even flinch. Tyler dropped his large hockey bag on the ground and made his way over to where his friends stood.
“You guys are so cheesy,” Tyler chuckled as he hugged Freddy. Marshall then came running up to Tyler and Tyler bent down to pet his chocolate lab. “Missed you buddy! Aww I know, daddys home,” Tyler pouted to his dog.
It wasn’t a party of people that were inside of the apartment. Just Tyler’s roommates and a few of their friends. Tyler stood up and loosened his tie a bit. Everyone was standing around Tyler awaiting a hug or some type of acknowledgement, but Tyler’s eyes wandered into the kitchen where a small brunette stood facing away from him and speaking on the phone.
“Where’s Meg?” Tyler asked, still looking at the random girl.
“Right there,” Jen laughed as she pointed at the mysterious girl.
“No way, MEG?!” Tyler shouted and the girl spun around, her brown locks swiftly spinning with her and landing perfectly on her shoulders. Magdalena flashed a toothy grin in Tylers direction and hung up the phone. “What the fuck!?” Tyler said as he walked over to her and grabbed a handful of hair. Magdalena’s honey blonde hair that Tyler was used to was now a chocolate brown. Magdalena giggled at his reaction.
“You like?” She grinned. Tyler looked into her blue orbs, he hated change. He had already missed her blonde hair.Tyler looked over to his friends who were standing around with beers in their hands chatting away.
“Uh..” He muttered. “It’s different.” Tyler said. He hated it, he wanted her to go back to being blonde right that instant. Magdalena jerked her head back, a little taken aback by his reaction. She knew it was different, but she really liked her new hair, and had hoped that someone like Tyler, someone she considered her best friend, to enjoy it too. But she read him like a book and knew that he didn’t like it.
“K then,” She rolled her eyes and brushed past him, annoyed. Tyler’s head spun in the direction to which she went and he too rolled his eyes as he watched her walk away. Freddy turned the TV on and Fast Five was playing. Tyler walked over to his friends who stood around the dining table and joined in on their conversation forgetting whatever awkward situation he had just encountered with Magdalena.
Later on that evening Magdalena and Tyler found themselves standing alone on the balcony, Magdalena with a glass of wine in her hand and Tyler with a Bud light in his grasp. Magdalena leaned on the balcony railing facing the North end of Boston and allowing the nice cool breeze brush past her face and through her hair, while Tyler leaned against the railing on his back, facing away from the city and taking small sips of his drink, avoiding any kind of inebriation, he had a game the next night.
“Hey listen, I’m sorry for missing your birthday this year,” Tyler apologized causing Magdalena took look over her right shoulder at him. She could hear and feel the wind in her ears which helped spring her back to reality from her thoughts.
“I’m not mad,” Magdalena’s soft voice chuckled. “Just sucks that I’ve barely seen you at all this year. With the whole lockout, you going to Switzerland and how you guys hop on a plane right away after a home game, this whole season just feels so weird...it’s different” Magdalena said as she looked at her wine glass and swirled it around grabbing the top with both hands.
“Yeah I know, I just felt bad cause I missed another birthday…” Tyler sighed as he spun around and joined Magdalena in gazing at the City of Boston.
“Tyler it’s fine, I understand.”
“And I’m sorry for how I acted earlier about your hair,”
“Tyler please stop apologizing!” Magdalena laughed. Tyler set his beer down on the small glass table and moved in closer towards Magdalena, closing the gap that was between their shoulders. He gently placed his hands on her hips and turned her to face him. Tyler grabbed the wine glass from her hands and placed it next to his beer on the table, keeping his right hand moving up and down her waist. Magdalena was hypnotized by his movements and remained still and quiet. Tyler then placed his left hand on her waist and looked down at her. Tyler was mesmerized by her stunning looks and he involuntarily squeezed her waist causing her to flinch.
“Oh sor-” Tyler smiled when he realized he was going to apologize once more. He pulled Magdalena even closer to him and he intently peered at the clear starless sky. Magdalena placed her head on his chest, and she began to trace figure eights along his chest.
It was moments like this that became a crucial and fragile part of Tyler and Magdalena’s relationship. Both were had prolonged feelings that they hadn’t acted upon, which wasn’t healthy on their part.
Inside sitting in the family room there was Freddy, and Jen; conversation full on.
“You’re telling me she looked at you?” Jen asked
“Yes! Eye contact and everything, I swear we had a moment!” Freddy exclaimed defensively.
“I want to believe you, but a part of me just doesn’t” Jen laughed.
“You’re just jealous that Miley Cyrus looked right at me and knows I exist” Freddy scoffed crossing his arms.
“Can’t be jealous of something that never happened’ Jen chuckled. Freddy rolled his eyes and jumped off the couch looking straight at the sliding doors that led off into the balcony. A broad smile formed on Freddy’s face as he watched his friend display so much affection.
“Aw, look at those love birds,” Freddy pointed out. Jen looked towards Freddy’s direction and noticed Tyler and Magdalena.
“Yuck” Jen gagged causing Freddy to shoot a glare at her.
“Hater,” Freddy playfully snapped at Jen as she gave him the finger.
“What’s on your mind,” Magdalena said after a long silence between herself and Tyler. They were still on the balcony, in an embrace but this time the fingers on her right hand were interlaced with Tyler’s large fingers on his left hand.
“Nothing,” Tyler said. Magdalena’s heart fluttered as his chest vibrated against her as he spoke. His words came out so softly and Magdalena felt her body shiver slightly. She looked up at him and noticed he was still looking past her. “Just missed you Mags,” He whispered as his eyes met her own.
“I tend to have that effect on people” Magdalena shrugged cockily. But she really didn’t know the effect that she had on Tyler, which scared him.
Tylers thoughts trailed back to Magdalena’s change in appearance. Her hair. He would never say it out loud, but Tyler fantasized about her. He saw her in his arms, in his bed, in his shower, walking down the aisle; everywhere, and in all his dreams she was blonde. But now that Magdalena had dyed her hair, he felt as though his fantasies would never come true, he had never thought- let alone seen her with brown hair. It was completely irrational for him to react the way he did, but Tyler was used to having control and being able to somewhat handle the direction in which certain aspects of his life would go. Magdalena changing her hair was a sign that he didn’t have control over her, and she could make her own choices, without his help. He felt as if she was slipping from him. She looked great, better even, it just caused an ache in his body that he couldn’t fight.
Tyler got a better grip of her waist and raised up his left hand and began to move side to side. Magdalena giggled.
“What do you think you’re doing?”
“Just follow my lead,” Tyler smirked as he and Magdalena began to slow dance. Magdalena looked up at Tyler who was still looking off into the distance, his mind was occupied. She admired his jawline and his sunken cheeks; she loved the way his lower lip was more slightly more plump than his upper lip and the small cleft under his nose. She smiled and placed her head back onto his chest and heard the ‘lub-dub’ of his heartbeat, calming and comforting her.
“There’s no music playing..”
“Shh, just...feel the moment,” Tyler cooed. Magdalena swooned over him as they swayed slowly on the balcony. Magdalena giggled at him and shook her head.
He’s so ridiculous. She thought.
“Hey we’re heading out for a movie you guys coming?” Freddy poked his head out into the balcony, causing Magdalena and Tyler to part but Tyler’s hand remained on the small of Magdalenas back. Magdalena looked at Tyler for his response, even though she already said yes in her head, she wanted Tyler to be there.
“Yeah I’m down” Tyler said nodding and his arm slid from her back, leaving goosebumps, and he walked back inside of the house. Freddy stepped outside and shoved his hands into his front pockets and smiled coyly.
“What?” Magdalena laughed.
“Don’t ‘what’ me. I see you two,” Freddy winked and wiggled his eyebrows. Freddy knew how Tyler and Magdalena felt about each other, and whenever they would get into fights, Freddy was ‘Switzerland’, he never took sides. Freddy was constantly encouraging Tyler to make something happen, but Tyler would always deny him and tell him that they were strictly just friends, whatever that meant.
“Don’t start with me Alfred!” Magdalena playfully slapped Freddy’s chest.
“Alright, alright, get inside!” Freddy said shoving Magdalena inside the apartment and shutting the balcony door shut behind him.
