My Skies Are Turning Black

New Beginnings With The Hawks

"But..why?" I asked.

"Well Sidney, we feel a change will be good for your career. They are a very strong team and will lead you to your second cup. Joel Quinville is very happy to have you. Sidney, I promise you will fit right in. Trust me. And they have been talking about making you captain..."

I sighed. "Yeah. They'd take the captain position off of pretty boy Jonathan Toews alright."

"Yes, Sidney they would. For you they would. Look, you have two weeks to get settled in Chicago before the season starts. You have time."

"Yeah because two weeks was enough time to sell my place here in Pittsburgh, buy a new place in Chicago and pack all of my stuff and get it to Chicago. In two weeks."

"C'mon Sid...your gonna get good money.."

"Okay, okay. Say, who did they trade me for?"

"They traded you for Kris Versteeg." What the fuck were the Pens thinking? Who the fuck is Versteeg? God damn it. Well it's their fucking loss.

"They do know...that I am a much better player than him, right? MUCH better?" I tried to keep my cool.

"Yes, they do. Well we do. Look this is better for your career. Trust me Sidney. You should be happy."

"Yeah. Alright. Have a good night." I hung up and sat back down. Great. I turned on my IPad. I might as well start looking at places in Chicago now.

The day before I was set to leave for Chicago, was the same day as my last practice with the Penguins. At practice that afternoon, I skated around on the ice for a little bit longer after everyone left and shot a puck into the now empty net. I'd really miss calling the Consol Center home. I headed to the lockers and took a shower and got changed. When I walked back into the room, everyone was standing there, waiting. I sighed and put down my bag as I walked over to coach. He shook my hand and pulled me into a hug. "Sidney, we're really going to miss you a lot. It's gonna be tough without you. Good luck in Chicago."

"Thanks coach. I'll miss you too." I hugged Letang next who was standing by coach. "Bud, you were the best defensemen I ever played with. I'll miss you a lot. Keep it up after i'm gone, alright?" He simply nodded as he was too upset to manage to say anything. I said goodbye to everyone until only Geno was left. "Man, I don't even know what to say. I love you, bro." I hugged him tightly. "I still can't imagine how I will play hockey without you..."

"Sid I can't either. Thank you. For everything you ever did for us and this team. We'll all miss you so much. It will never be the same." He began to sniffle and I couldn't prevent a few tears from coming. As I pulled away from the hug, Fleury walked over with a bag.

"Sidney, the team put together a little gift for you. Again, thank you for everything." He handed me the bag and I slowly pulled out the gift. It was a framed picture of our team after my first game ever in the NHL, where we won. The other picture frame had a photo from when we won the Stanley Cup in 2009. On the backs were signatures of all the guys. I couldn't stop myself from crying now.

"Guys, this is a great gift. Thank you all so much. I'll never forget this team and the great memories you all gave me. It was an honour being your captain." I stopped because I knew I couldn't say anymore through the tears. Everyone came in and we pulled into a group hug.

As I walked out to my car, I took one final look at the place I once called home. Goodbye. I whispered.

-Two weeks later-

That was the last of the boxes. The truck just dropped off everything and I paid them their $2600. Looking around, the huge living room was filled with boxes. It was a nice, four bedroom condo in downtown Chicago. It was a million dollar condo and I was pretty happy with it. It was also brand new, as I was the first to live there. My phone vibrated on the kitchen counter and I walked over to see who it was.

Hey Sidney welcome to Chicago. The first game is only three days away and the entire Blackhawks organization is very excited to have you. There is practice going on right now but it is your first day here so by all means take the day to get comfortable with the city. You may drop by the United Center any time today to pick up your new jersey and gear. Sincerely, Coach Q

The time was 1:20PM. I'd only been in Chicago since 8AM. I guess i'd drop by right now to pick up my stuff. And check out the guys. Changing into my suit, I checked my appearance one last time in the mirror and left. Putting the UC address in my GPS, I realized I only lived six minutes away. Pretty convenient. As I walked in through the side arena doors, I looked around for where to go. I looked to my left and saw a glimmer of the ice through the ajar door. Ah. I walked in and spotted the coach. He noticed me and a smile appeared on his usually serious face.

"Sidney, you came! So nice to finally have you here." He pulled me into a hug.

"Yeah it's great to be here coach. Thanks." He nodded and then led me down the hallways to the locker room.

"Sidney, these are your home and away jerseys, and your practice ones. And this is all your gear. He handed me three packages. "Say...if you don't mind, would you care to join the boys for practice?" I mulled over the thought. Well...I may be a bit tired and off my game. But that wouldn't stop me from showing the Hawks just what I was capable of.

"Yes sir I would. Give me a couple minutes to get into gear and i'll be there." Coach Q was almost ecstatic as he left. Once he was gone, I got up and walked around the empty locker room. Kane, Sharp, Hossa, Crawford, Shaw, Saad, Hjalmarsson...I read aloud all the names of the jerseys. Until I stopped at one. Toews. This guy. I hastily got all my gear on and headed out to the ice. I stood near the benches as everyone stopped skating and stared at me. Sharp nudged Crawford and said something, and Crawford turned to look at me. Patrick Kane looked me up and down, then turned to say something in Hossa's ear. They both smirked. Shaw stared at me, and when my gaze fell on him, broke into a kiss ass smile. I took in all their stupid judging looks until I landed on Jonathan Toews. He made no snide remarks. No whispering in a teammates ear. Just locked eyes with me with a dead cold look on his face. And then he smiled. I smiled back and then looked away. I felt so fucking out of place. Coach Q was talking so I decided to wait until he was done.

"All right boys that was good. Just work a little more on-" he stopped talking and turned to see what everyone was looking at. Me. "Oh Sid, your here. Great. We're gonna do some warm ups for the game. Go on on to the ice. Everyone, Sidney is our new teammate. Feel free to guide him around Chicago and involve him in your team outings." He turned and saw that I didn't budge. "Well, go on now." I hesitantly skated my way onto the ice and stood by the one, and only guy who hadn't judged me like a jerk yet. Teuvo Teravinen. He looked over and whispered hi. I responded with a smile. Coach Q continued. "Okay we're doing two teams of 13. One team will have 14. Crawford in net for one team and Darling in the other. The team skated over to make the teams. Kane and Toews were the first to move to sides, Kane on one and Toews on the other. Sharp, Shaw, Hossa, Seabrook, Saad, Crawford, and others followed Toews. The rest moved to the other side. I stood where I was until Kane spoke out.

"Bruh, are you just gonna stand there the whole practice? Get your ass over here Sid the Kid!" He exclaimed. Some guys laughed as they stared at me. He motioned for me to join their team. So he thought he was fucking funny. I skated over and everyone got into position. No one stepped forward for the face-off so Kane nudged me to go. I stepped forward and set my stick down. Obviously, I won and I effortlessly glided down the ice and scored on Crawford.

"Damn, that was fast!" Hossa exclaimed. "And we just started." What, did these guys think I was an amateur or something? Just cause they had won two cups already didn't make them better than me. How I wanted to be in the practice comfort of my team and not these jerks. I played great the rest of practice and scored two more on Crawford until someone tripped me. That someone, was Sharp.

"Oh shit, i'm fucking sorry. I thought you were someone else. I thought you were Kane. We're trying to get even. From last season." He skated away without helping me up after purposefully tripping me. God, if he wasn't my teammate, i'd destroy him.

"Alright boys great practice. Remember, first game's in three days! Next practice is on game day!" Coach Q yelled as everyone gathered their water bottles and headed for the locker room. I got up and brushed the ice off of me and followed. I didn't make eye contact with any of them as I quickly changed and stuffed my things into my bag. "Hey Sid. We're going out clubbing tonight, ya know, in honour of the NHL season starting soon. So you wanna come? It'll be sick." I turned and looked at Kane who just made the offer. He was smirking as he looked long and hard at me. God he pissed me off.

"Yeah. It's like our thing before the start of a season. Everyone goes." Toews added.

"Well, i'm not really doing anything. So sure."

"Great. Me and Tazer will pick you up then?" I nodded and we all left the locker room.

I was sitting at the kitchen table when my phone buzzed. We're here. It read. I locked the door and went down to the lobby and out to Kane's car, a black Corvette. I sat in the back and was greeted with the scent of heavy cologne. Kane's. It was disgusting. Kind of like him. "Alright, let's go fuck some shit up!" Patrick exclaimed as he sped out of the driveway and merged onto the road without looking for on coming traffic once.

"So Sid the place isn't too far from Kane's place. About a five minute walk. He'll leave his car at home and we'll walk from there. That way we don't have to worry about drunk driving and shit. Oh and Hossa is designated driver tonight so you don't have to worry about a cab." Toews had to yell over Kane's rock music that was blasting through the car.

"Sounds good." I leaned in and replied. It took us 10 minutes to get to the club. Well probably takes longer but with the hell ride we just went through called Patrick Kane's driving, it took us 10.

"You guys go in and i'll drop my car off and walk here." Me and Toews got out of the Corvette and Kane sped off. I followed Toews into the place and noticed many of the players were already there. And already very intoxicated. Crawford was busy with a blonde to notice anything around him. Sharp handed me a drink and nodded for me to sit down with him and the others.

"So Sidney you got a girl?" I shook my head as I took a sip of the drink, then immediately spit it out.

"This, is unusually strong?" I looked to Sharp and Kane, who had just walked in and sat down.

"Yeah. Cause it has some drugs in it. Y'know. For extra fun tonight." Kane winked. What the fuck? I nearly dropped the glass bottle as Sharp and Kane broke into laughter.

"Woah, relax. There's nothing in that. We're joking! The NHL does drug tests before the first game!" They began laughing again. This was their idea of a joke? Fuck these guys. Regardless of what they said, I decided to go to the bar and get a safe drink. As I sat down at the counter, the 30 somethings brunette bartender came back over to me after serving me.

"So Sidney Crosby. Your first day here with the Hawks, huh?" She questioned with a smile.

"Yeah. Gonna take a long time to get used to these guys." She shook her head.

"Yeah no kidding. I've been working here since their first cup and they are crazy, crazy party boys. Seriously. The stuff that goes down here doesn't leave. And if it somehow does, then their PR department, who are magicians or something, manage to paint that squeaky clean image back on." She leaned in closer. "One of them had sex with a girl in the back." I raised my eyebrows. She continued. "Your not like them. So it will take you a while to fit in." Her gaze drifted over to the back of the club and I turned to see what it was. It was Kane. On top of tables. Shirtless. With about five girls with him. With his teammates hollering and cheering him on. Her gaze turned back to me. "See what I meant?" God, we had only been here an hour and they got crazy... I was done. I felt sick for some reason. I paid for
My still full drink and walked past many girls surrounding the players and walked out. The fresh air was refreshing against the hot, stale atmosphere inside the club. Before I got to signal a cab over, the door swung open and Jonathan came out.

"Why are you leaving? Killing the party to be-" I remembered everything Harley told me about what Jonathan did, and how he was being a total jerk. How he made her cry countless times after he got her pregnant and wanted nothing to do with her. I suddenly felt a surge of anger. I turned and swung on him just as he was speaking. He stumbled backwards into the wall. "What the fuck is wrong with you!" He clutched his jaw and I lunged towards him and grabbed him by his collar.

"Your a real fucking jerk you know that?!" He looked confused as he struggled to loosen my grip on him.

"What? What the fuck are you talking about? I never did anything!" He exclaimed as he landed a blow to my
chest. I stumbled backwards onto the sidewalk.

I regained my balance and looked up to him. "You know damn well what you did! With her. With Harley." His face went from a look of confusion, to plain cold.

"Oh. She told you about that, huh? Yeah she's been acting like a real bitch lately-" I pulled him to the ground and landed another blow to the side of his face. But before I could continue to beat the shit out of him, a cop car pulled over to the curb and a cop about my age, got out and ran over to us, and pulled me off of Toews.

"HEY! What the fuck is going on here?"

"Nothing, officer. Just a little disagreement." Toews mumbled as he stood up with the help of the second officer.

"Well no fucking shit!" The young cop, Officer Carson exclaimed. "Never thought i'd see Sidney Crosby and Jonathan Toews beating the hell out of each other outside a downtown club! This is gold." He took out his IPhone and took a picture of both of us. Pleased with the picture, he continued. "You assholes need to calm the fuck down. We could hear you arguing from the lights all the way back there. Now go. Go home. Get the fuck out of here." He handed Toews a bandage from his pocket for his busted face and signalled a cab over. "Take him home." The officer pushed me into the back of the cab and handed the driver 40 bucks. Toews told them Hossa would take him home. I looked at him one last time through the window. He looked back at me and just smiled.
