Chapter 13

It had been two weeks since Kendall and Derek had taken the trip to Shattuck to reconnect with each other and the place that made them who they were. It was now not just the place where their relationship started, it was now the place they got re-engaged.
Everything was going smoothly, the pair had training every day and every night they spent going out for dinners, hanging out with friends, cuddling on the dock at their house. Kendall had officially moved into the house, and they officially decided to put the loft on the market. It was time for someone else to have memories in that old firehouse, Kendall and Derek’s time in that place was coming to a close.

Kendall sat on the cold table in her gyno’s office. She hadn’t been feeling well the last couple days, she was throwing up, feeling nauseous and well her and Derek had been getting intimate...every single night since Shattuck. They couldn’t get enough of each other; these past few weeks have been the closest they’ve been to each other since senior year of High School. They were like rabbits. She had a feeling something was up, and wanted to be sure she was or was not expecting a little stepan bun in the oven any time soon. She knew Kaylee should of come with her, but Ryan and Kaylee were literally an old married couple, and best friends. Poor Kay couldn’t keep her mouth shut, she would tell Ryan who really couldn’t keep his mouth shut and he would run and tell Derek and everyone in sight.

The door opened and Dr. Lee walked in and shut the door. “Kendall so good to see you again. How are things?” She asked as she sat down on the swivel chair. “Uhm I am good. Just not feeling all that well, and I just wanted to make sure...Well you know why I am here.” She played with her hair as she looked down at the ground, counting the white and blue tiles. “Well Kendall it’s a good thing you came in, I just got the results from the blood test and you are indeed pregnant. This must be so exciting for you. Well I’ll let you go, I’ve left a folder of important information you and your fiancé should look over when you get home. And make another appointment for next month. Congrats again Kendall.” Doctor Lee squeezed her hand and walked out leaving Kendall alone and cold on the table to digest the fact that her and Derek were about to be parents in nine months. Not that they were planning to get married in twelve months or anything. He just had to go and get her knocked up. She shouldn’t of been so stupid, she should of made sure they were using protection and that she was taking her pill everyday at the same time.

She knew she should have been excited. Derek wasn’t going anywhere, and they were going to get married in a year, goddamn they should have been married already. This wasn’t the plan. Marriage, then children. Not children, then marriage. Now her wedding would feel like a shotgun wedding to hide the fact that their three-month-old child’s parents weren’t married. She wanted to throw up, and it wasn’t from the morning sickness. She quickly shot up and walked out of the office sliding her phone out of her Celine bag and texted Kaylee. “Derek knocked me up. SOS the house. NOW.” Her phone buzzed in her hand and she quickly looked down on her way to her beamer. “OMG. I KNEW YOU WOULD GET PREGNANT BEFORE ME. YOU BITCH. COMING OVER NOW.” Thank god Derek had a private Pilates class now with Jake Gardiner and Ryan, she couldn’t come home to see him in this flustered mess.

Twenty minutes later she pulled up to the house, punching in the code and closing the gate behind her, parking next to Kaylee’s old Land Rover Discovery that she would not get rid of. She was probably already in the house fooling around with Shattuck their cute golden doodle. Her and Ryan made Casa De Stepan, Casa De McDonagh whenever they were over. She walked in, slipping off her Jack Rogers and sauntering into the living room. “Kaylee?” She shouted. “Kitchen!”

She rolled her eyes and walked into the kitchen, seeing her best friend making fruit salad. “Did I say you could come in and use my kitchen to make yourself food?” She popped up onto the island and ate a piece of watermelon with her hands. “It’s not for me silly. It’s for you; you need to eat healthy now. You have a little Stepan in you!” Kaylee put her hand on her best friend’s stomach and grinned. “I guess.” Kendall smiled. “So when did Steps knock his old lady up?” Kaylee asked as she slid onto the kitchen island too, both of them digging into the bowl of fruit without any utensils. The doctor said I was two weeks pregnant, so I had to guestimate, when we went to Shattuck.” With that the puppy ran into the kitchen and looked up at the two girls. “Not you Shatty.” They laughed and she threw him a piece of melon, his tail wagging as he picked it up from the floor. “So how are you going to tell him?” Kaylee asked looking at Kendall, Kendall’s stomach and then back at Kendall. “No idea. But I have to do it today. He needs to know so he can internally freak out like I am doing.” Kaylee agreed. The sooner Derek knew, the better for the both of them.

“Well the boys Pilates session is over.” Kaylee looked down at her watch. “So I should probably go, Ryan will be looking for me soon, which means Derek is probably on his way home. And you have news to give him. Also I left a little present on your bed that you can give him when you tell him. Someone gave them to me at my wedding shower as a prank. You need them more then me.” She winked at Kendall knowing it was her. She knew exactly what it was. “Hey I thought you would have been knocked up by now! You guys have been married for two years!” Kaylee rolled her eyes and kissed her cheek. “Love you babe, Face Time me later!” She grabbed her bag, said goodbye to Shattuck and walked out of the house. Kendall got up off the island, hearing Kaylee’s car engine starting in the distance. She took the back stairs from the kitchen that led up to the second floor. She walked into her and Derek’s bedroom. Boxes of her belongings everywhere, she still hadn’t unpacked fully. She spotted the gift, the bow still on it, on her bed. She picked it up, unwrapping it and smiled. Little baby socks that looked like skates. They were adorable, and were supposed to be for her little goddaughter, or son but the McDonagh’s still hadn’t reproduced yet. Now they were going to adorn the little tiny feet of her child.

She pressed her hand on her stomach as she heard the front door open and close. She could hear Shattuck’s puppy barks greet Derek at the door. “Kendall?! Baby?” That nickname made her breathe in and out. Here goes nothing. “Derek can you come up here.” Kendall shouted. She sat on the bench that was pressed up against the front of the bed, the socks still in their packaging hidden behind her. “Coming.” He shouted back.

“What’s up K?” Derek asked as he came into the room, slipping off his sneakers and taking off his lululemon t-shirt. “Can you sit down?” She asked him. “Is this important? I feel gross. I want to take a shower, and do some laundry. Then we need to unpack some more stuff and get these boxes out of the room.” He added as he walked out of the room to throw his shirt into the hamper in the laundry room. “Yeah it’s really important.” She yelled so he could hear her. He walked back in eyeing her. “Are you deciding to leave me again or something?” He chuckled as he went to slip off his shorts. “Derek Kenneth Stepan sit down.” She said firmly but softly. He gave her a quizzical look and sat down.

“So you know how I haven’t been feeling well the last few days? Well I went to the gyno today just to quickly check up on everything. And make sure it wasn’t something that it wasn’t.” He nodded. “Okay. Did she say anything?” Different things started spinning in his head, was she about to tell him that she had cancer? Or that she had some weird disease that like two percent of people in the world have? He didn’t like the look on her face. “Well I got a blood and urine test and well, here.” She planted a half unwrapped gift in his hands. He opened the package more to reveal baby socks that looked like skates, they were pretty adorable. “What is this?” He gave her a look and then put two and two together. “Oh my god. Are you? Kends are you? Oh my god your pregnant!” His face lit up and he stood up pacing back and forth. “Oh my god we’re not married yet! We’re going to be those people having a baby out of wedlock. Now we really need to rev up the wedding plans. Our kid can’t be a bastard for more then three months! I promise you that. We need to baby proof the house, and the apartment in the city, and we need to re-do one of the guest rooms into the baby’s room. And we need to kick Kreider out of the guest room in the city, and oh my god what happens if you have twins? That’s even more work. And Shattuck now really needs to get house broken. And we need to start buying stuff! Tomorrow we’ll go tomorrow.”

Kendall smiled, thank god he was going even more crazy then her at the moment. “Derek...Derek calm down we’ll figure everything out. Just calm down.” She tugged at his arm to sit down again. He followed and brought her into his arms, wrapped his arms around her stomach. “Damn Kendall. We’re going to be parents.” He whispered. “April 2016 we’re going to be parents.” She whispered. “Are we ready for this?” He asked. “Well we’re going to have to be. You and me will figure everything out. We’re a team.” He closed his eyes and kissed the top of her head. “We’re a team. You and me. And this kiddo.” He planted his hand on her stomach. “This is crazy.” She nodded. “Insane.”
