The Cabin by the Lake

The warm air hit my face as we drive up the drive way. Zac’s hand was on my thigh as the music filled the quietness. The cabin looked more beautiful than I remembered. The memories of meeting Zac rushed through me head and my heart fluttered. I looked over at my husband and smiled, “I love you.” He smiled and shook his head, “I’ll never get tired of hearing that.” I jumped out of Zac’s truck, holding my purse close to my side. The dogs ran around the yard enjoying the fresh air and grass. Zac brought our bags in and put his arms around me, “This is going to be a great summer.” He kissed my cheek and I smiled, “We should go see my parents though.” I nodded, “Why don’t you go tell them we are here? I want to freshen up a bit.” He smiled and kissed me lightly. “I’ll only be a few.” I only need 3 minutes. I thought to myself. I ran to the bathroom once he left the cabin and I pulled out the box that I kept in my purse. I’d had it in there for 4 days now…too nervous to pee on the stick. I read the directions, even though I know what to do. “Angle the stick, pee, wait 3 minutes. Two lines means yes, one line means no.

I looked at the stick, not believing what it said. I took out another box I had bought a few days ago, I head these tests can sometimes be wrong, and I wanted to be as sure as I can. “Babe?” I heard Zac come in, I was waiting for the second test to mark its lines…only 1 line so far… “Babe, you alright?” I flushed the toilet and held both tests in my hands.

I stepped out of the bathroom, trying to look as neutral as possible. “Hey, you alright?” He walked over to me and I nodded. “What would you say if we put an addition on the cabin?” Zac laughed, “Why would we need that?” I shrugged, “What if we had visitors?” Zac sat on the couch, “We’ve got a pullout, that’ll be nice enough…” I shrugged, “what if we had a visitor or 2 that were permanent?” Zac laughed, “And who would that be?” I revealed the two tests that I had behind my back. “2 lines mean yes.” He stood up and looked at the pregnancy tests. He looked at me, a smiled spreading across his face. “You’re going to be a dad Zac.” He wrapped his arms around me and spun me around. He kissed me on my lips hard. “We’re going to have a baby?” I laughed and nodded, tears welling in my eyes.

I squeezed Zac’s hand as hard as I could, “Fuck!” I yelled as I looked into his eyes, “I hate you so much! I hate you!” I screamed at him, but he just smiled. He knew I didn’t mean it. “One more push, you got this.” The doctor said, Zac and I screamed together on my last push, and we heard the little cries from our baby. “Oh god I never want to do that again.” Zac kissed my forehead and the doctor sat at the base of the stretcher again. “Alright, ready to push for baby number 2?” I looked at Zac and he looked at me, “I’m good with only having 2 kids. No more. Never again.” Zac kissed my forehead, “Get ready to push Mrs. Rinaldo.”

I watched Zac with the kids, playing outside in the fall leaves. They turned one today and their party was starting soon. “I’m happy I get to see my grandchildren raised right…I’m glad I get a do-over.” I looked at Steve and smiled, “I love you Dad.” He turned to me with wide eyes. “Dad?” I smiled and hugged him, “You’ve proven yourself to me. You’re my dad.” Sarah and Casey came in with their children on their hips; we were lucky enough to have kids around the same time. Zac brought Logan and Melanie in. I loved seeing him with them. Soon the Bruins showed up and then a few Flyers that Zac stayed in touch with. Our big house felt small with all our family and friends. Zac came over and wrapped his arms around me. “I want to have another kid.” I turned around and looked up at him, “I know you want to wait until the twins are older…but…I want another one with you.” I wrapped my arms around him and kissed him lightly, “I’m pregnant.” I said with a smile. It took him a few seconds, but his eyes perked up, “Really?” I smiled, “This is the last one, I mean it this time.” He kissed me again, “I guess we’ll be making another addition on the cabin?”
