A Missing Puzzle Piece

Chapter 12

Zach’s POV

I hugged Molli close to me as she sobbed. I couldn’t even begin to imagine what she was going through, especially if she came here. She hates Asbury Park and has made that very clear multiple times. I’ve always liked it and never understood why Molli didn’t like it.

Her niece. Alexandra. I remembered meeting her. She was a little girl who had brunette curls and dark brown eyes and a precious smile. Molli was like her second mother.

Tears filled my eyes. I begged myself to keep it together for Molli.

I sat up and pulled her up next to me. She was so sad, and she never cried for anyone. She was always the strong one. And to see her broken like this was hard to look at.

I patted her silky blonde hair. “It’s alright Molli. You’ll be all right. Alex is in a better place now. She’s happier where she is now.”

I couldn’t console her. There was only one thing I could think of that would make her feel better for a small period of time.

I tilted her head up. I knew I didn’t have to ask her this time. I just had to do it. I pressed my lips against hers as best I could. I wrapped my arms around her back, as she sat up a little bit. I felt her body relax and she leaned into me.

Her hands were on my shoulders and I moved my hands up her body until I had reached her face. I tangled my fingers in her hair and she kept her hands around my neck.

It felt good to kiss her again. Nine years. Nine whole years had passed. Nine years I had waited for her.

She let go of me. “Can I trouble you with a small favor?” She lay back down.

“Anything.”

“I’m hungry.”

Now I’m not dirty minded, but I waited for her to explain. If she needed me to go out to grab her a meal, I would. If she needed something else, I would do that too.

“There’s a Wendy’s a few miles away. Can you grab me some food?”

I smiled. “Anything. But I think it would be good for you to come get some fresh air. Come with me and maybe we can get some ice cream or something too.” I was treating her like a child, and I smiled.

She nodded. “You’re right. And thanks.”

I smiled and pulled her out of her bed. She said, “I need to get dressed. Wait downstairs?”

I nodded. “Okay.”

I walked downstairs on my own. I just took a second to think. I wondered if I would have to worry about Travis. And if I did, would I be the victim of abuse? Of course I would be. He loves Molli, and I don’t think he would hurt her. But I could be wrong.

Look at yourself. He’s your BEST FRIEND. And you’re questioning if he’s going to abuse your girlfriend. The thought made me cringe. Was I really causing him enough pain that he would do that? And if I was inflicting that much pain would he hurt me? If he did I wouldn’t have a problem defending myself, it was just I wouldn’t mark Travis as the guy to try and abuse somebody.

I shook my head to clear it. I would have to deal with him sooner or later. “The sooner the better.” I said to myself.

“What was that?”

Molli was coming down the stairs. “Nothing. Ready to go?”

She nodded. “Can we take your car?”

“Sure.”

I turned on the radio. Some old song was playing. I could tell it was old, and as I was about to change it Molli yelled, “NO!” It was the very beginning of the song I could tell, there were no lyrics yet. It was a piano intro. I could tell she was listening closely

“They built the titanic to be one of a kind but many ships have ruled the sea, they built the Eiffel tower to stand long but they could build another if they please the Taj Mahal the pyramids of Egypt are unique I suppose but when they built you,” She broke off in a sob.

I put my arm around her back. I didn’t start the car; I let her listen to the song. She started singing again towards the end. “But love is a power greater that death just like the songs and stories told,” She choked on a sob again, and sang the end quietly. “When she built you brother, she broke the mold.”

She was quiet as she listened to the song fade out. Tears stung in her eyes as she repeated some lyrics to herself.

When she was done she was silent and looked out the window. “What song is that?”

“Terry’s Song.” She said quietly.

I suddenly remembered. Terry’s Song. Of course! That song about Bruce Springsteen’s right hand man. I pulled out the CDs and looked for a specific one. Once I found it I put on track 11.

She looked up at me. “What’s this?”

“Terry’s Song is a pretty depressing song. The guy who sings the song has a way with playing with your emotions. I figure this song might cheer you up a little bit.”

She listened intently. “Mary’s Place. On the Rising. Bruce Springsteen.”

I nodded. “You bet.”

She managed a small smile. When she did she leaned across her seat to me and kissed my cheek.

I wanted to kiss her back, but I remembered she was hungry, and I noticed I was hungry too. She was going through my CDs. “Is it okay if I turn it off and put on a different song.”

“You do whatever you like.” Curious as to what she was going to do, I decided to let her surprise me as I looked at the road.
