James POV

We stepped off the bus at Consol Energy Center after driving here from Pittsburgh International. It was a long ride from New York and I just wanted to see Cameron. It was 3AM and I was exhausted. I walked up to Pauly and asked if I could have a ride home and he said it didn’t look like I needed one. I was confused and looked around the parking lot until I saw a face I didn’t think I was gunna see until tomorrow morning. I watched as she ran towards me and I dropped my bag so I could catch her. She wrapped her legs around my waist and her arms around my neck as I stuck my face into her hair to inhale the scent she was associated with. After a minute, I dropped her back on her feet and looked at her to make sure she was actually there.

“Hi.”
“Hi.’
“How did you know what time to pick me up?” I asked.
“Geno told me when your plane landed and that you missed me so I decided to come pick you up.” she said with a smile.
“Thank you. I really didn’t wanna ride with Pauly. He smells.”
She laughed, “I bet.” She then turned to Pauly, “Hey Pauly, do you smell? James says you smell.”
He laughed, “Only for him.” he stuck his tongue out at me.
She turned back towards the car, “I have someone else who missed you, too.”
“My mom,” I joked.
She laughed again, “No.”

I watched as she opened the back door of her car and a small, black body jumped out and rushed towards me. I dropped down to my knees as I was attacked by licks on the face.

“Hey Bacardi. I missed you too.”

After she was done attacking my face, she went to explore some of my teammates who were still around. Cameron looped the leash around her hand while I went and dropped my stuff in the bed of her truck. Cameron called Bacardi over and she hopped in the back as Cam hopped in the front.

“What time do you have to be back here for practice?” she asked me.
“Coach gave us the day off actually.”
“Oh, ok. What are we gonna do.”
“I was hoping we could just have a lazy day.”
“That sounds amazing, I could use a day off.” she replied.
“So it’s a date.”
“Yup.”

When I finally looked away from her and at the road, I realized we had arrived at our apartment. I climbed out of the front and grabbed my hockey bag while Cam grabbed Bacardi. As we walked into the building, I interlaced our hands. We waited for the elevator and when it finally came I waited until Cam stepped in first.

“Aren’t you comin’?” she asked.
I cheekily responded, “Only if you hold the elevator.”
“I’ll always hold the elevator for you.” she said. Damn. She’s good.
“And I’ll always ask.” she looked caught off guard. But I’m better.

I stepped into the elevator thinking about the day I met her. It was the second best day of my life besides getting drafted but I had a feeling in my gut that one day it would be my favorite day. And I found myself desperately wanting someone I could love more than hockey.
