Dirt Road Anthem

“An ice cold beer sittin' in the console
Memory lane up in the headlights
It's got me reminiscing on them good times
I'm turnin' off a real life drive and that's right
I'm hittin' easy street on mud tires”
Dirt Road Anthem by Jason Aldean

Cameron’s POV
Talking to James at lunch isn’t anything like you thought it would be. He was actually really sweet. Everyone thinks he’s a stuck up player which I guess, maybe he is. I don’t know him that well yet. I did learn that he has one sister, Rebecca and three brother, Michael, Peter, and Nicholas. He was born in Whitby, Ontario, Canada. In return, I told him I had two brothers, names I didn’t tell him, and that I was born in Victoria, Canada until 4 years ago when I moved to Pittsburgh. Like a gentleman, he paid for lunch, even with my argument.

On the way out to the car he told me to not look on social media for a couple days, I told him that I could take care of myself and it was a part of my job to deal with stupid people who thought they could meddle in people’s personal business, but I appreciated his concern.

We hopped into his car and he told me that since he had a game tonight, he would go home and take a nap. I asked him if he would drop me off back at the office so I could get some work done, and he would text me when he woke up from his nap. He agreed and sped off toward my office. There was a comfortable but deafening silence in the car so I turned on the radio. I did a silent cheer when I realized he had Sirius XM radio. I turned the dial to , the channel 56, The Highway. I saw Dirt Road Anthem was on and started belting out the lyrics, not caring what James thought.

James’ POV
I smiled when I heard Cameron start to sing along to the radio. I recognized the song as Dirt Road Anthem by Jason Aldean. I started singing along with Cameron and Jason. I saw Cameron smile a little out of the corner of my eye. ‘God her smile is beautiful’ I internally pouted as I turned into her office complex and put the car in park. I asked to have her number so I could text her my apartment address as I handed my phone over. She smiled as she typed her number in. She put my phone in the cup holder and escorted herself out of the Ferrari.

I drove back to my apartment not once changing the radio station. I probably looked like an idiot walking into my apartment, it was a good thing I didn’t live with anybody. For the second time in a row, I went to sleep with a girl named Cameron on my mind.

Cameron's POV

Cameron didn’t want to admit that she kind of like going to lunch with James. Sometimes I did get a little lonely, and it felt good to let someone in to my life, even if not very much. I sat down at my desk and started trying out intros to the article she was writing about James.

I didn’t remember how long she had been working on my article when my phone biuzzed alerting me I had a new text message.

To Cameron From James:
Hey. Just woke up from nap. I’ll pick u up at your apartment in 1 hour. Txt your apartment number.

To James From Cameron:
K. I don’t have anything to wear tho… aprtment 18.

To Cameron From James:
I’ll bring u a jersey. J

I blushed looking at his text. I looked at the time realizing that it would take me at least 20 minutes to get home and I had to walk Bacardi. I rushed out to my Chevy and sped out of the garage. I ran up the stairs to my aprtment being greeted by a very happy puppy. “Hey Bacradi. Did you miss me? C’mon let’s go out.” I clipped her to her lead as she dragged me out the door and down the stairs.

I stood in front of the mirror in my room when I heard a knock on the door folowed by the sound of frantic barking. “Bacardi! Shhhh.” I opened the door and was met by a suit-clad James. He looke amazing. His arms, his chest… I heard him clear his throat as a blush spread across my face. “Here’s the jersey” he said as he held out one of his old Whitby jersey’s. “Are you sure?” I asked not wanting to touch, let alone wear something so special. “Yeah. Go put it on.”

I led him into the apartment as I walked to my bedroom to put on the jersey. It was gigantic.
I could swim in it.

James’ POV

My heart swelled when I thought about Cameron’s reaction to seeing me in my suit. I laughed at her reaction to me offering my Whitby Jersey too. I actually was a little skeptical to her wearing it, wondering what would be the public’s reaction. But I brushed it off thinking it wasn’t any of their business.

I heard someone clear their throat and looked up at Cameron. She looked spectacular in my jersey. It swamped her, off course, but she rocked it. It didn’t show off her curves which, for once, I was thankful for. It meant none of his teammates could see her assets. He smiled thinking only he got to experience this with her.

“Ready?”

“Yup, let’s go.”

I led her out of the apartment and waited while she said goodbye to her dog, who’s name I learmned was Bacardi, and locked her door. I looked at the apartment number thinking it was ironic that it was his jersey number as well. I showed her to the Ferrari I drove earlier today and opened the door for her. I held her hand as she climbed into the low passenger seat.
