James POV

I had just stepped out of the locker room when Geno came in with Cameron. They were laughing at something but stopped as soon as they realized everyone had shifted their gaze to her jersey and then at me. Some were smiling and others, the puck bunnies, were glaring at her. Her eyes scanned the room and relief flooded them when they landed on mine. The noise returned to the room as Sid walked in.

“Hey, Nealsy, you comin’ out with us?” he asked.

My eyes shifted over to Cameron silently asking if she wanted to come with us.

“No, I’m good. I have to go to brunch with my friend tomorrow anyway.”

My attention turned to Sid as I said, “No, I’m good. I’ll drive Cam home.”

“No. Don’t. Go have fun with your friends. I can catch a cab.” She replied.

“You are my friend. Right?” I replied.

She smiled and said, “I guess so.”

She sassily walked out of the door marked exit while everyone, including me, watched her leave.

“Dang.”

‘Don’t I know it.’ I walked out after her.

Cameron POV

‘What! He turned down his friends just to drive me home! And we’re friends! Ok, cool whatever.’

I was brought back to the present as I heard pounding footsteps behind me, “Hey wait up! I have the keys.” I immediately stopped and turned around putting one hand on my hip while I gave him my best ‘Well hurry up then’ face. He stopped and immediately copied my posture causing me to break out into a fit of giggles. My I mention I hate my laugh. After I died from embarrassment, I looked up to see James smiling. I smiled back while I turned around and made my way to his car. He shuffled past me as he unlocked the car and opened the door for me.

“Thank You.”

“Your welcome.”

I climbed the stairs up to my apartment with James lagging behind me. I stopped at my door and turned around waiting for James to catch up. He stepped up in front of me and gave me a sly smirk.

“Did you have fun?”

“Yeah. Thanks for taking me.”

“Of course. We’re friends right?”

“You already asked that.”

“And, I don’t know if you were just saying that because my team was standing there.”

“Yes, we are friends.”

“Good.”

He then enveloped me into a hug. “We’ll hang out later.” he said before he entered the stairwell with a wink..

2 months later

Cameron POV

It’s been two months since James and I have established our friendship. We were growing closer every day and I went to almost all of his home games. He wouldn’t let me give him back his jersey saying it looked better on me anyway. I was walking to lunch as I walked into my favorite sandwich place. I sat down and ate my lunch in record time knowing I only had an hour lunch break and the restaurant was quite a walk from my office.

I was walking out of the restaurant when someone grabbed my arm, “Cam…” ‘No.’ I knew his team was in town but I didn’t think I would see him.

“No. Jamie. Not here. Not now. Not ever.”

I successfully walked out of the restaurant without seeing him and without him chasing after me before I broke down. I immediately hailed a cab and recited my address.

I climb the stairs two at time while pulling on my hat and skipping my floor going up four more levels. I knocked loudly on the door.

“What the-- Cameron, what’s wrong.”

I didn’t respond but instead fell into his arm crying on his shoulder.

“It’s ok… come on.” He led me through his apartment to his bedroom as I heard laughter from the living room.

He sat on the bed and pulled me onto his lap, “Tell me what’s wrong.”

I sniffled and started from the beginning, feeling safe his arms.
