Room for Rent

Lauren was exhausted leaving the hospital. She had pulled 2 twelve hours shifts in the emergency room in the span of 36 hours. After washing up and fixing her hair so she looked somewhat presentable, she got in her car and headed off to the Ruffs’.
When she pulled up to the house, two things struck her. First, there was the sheer size of the house. No wonder they wanted company…the house was huge! Despite its size, it looked rather homey with the glow of the lights coming from the windows. The second thing Lauren noticed were the cars parked out front. Range Rovers, Jaguars, BMWs…if you named an expensive car you could bet that there was at least one parked out front of the house. Lauren parked her modest Nissan Versa Note (a graduation present) away from the expensive cars and walked up to the front door.
At the door, she smoothed her hands over her scrubs to calm her nerves before ringing the doorbell. She heard heels clicking towards the front door and took a deep breath as the door opened. In front of her stood Gaye Ruff. The tall, slender woman with blonde hair wore the widest smile as she greeted Lauren.
“Lauren! It’s such a pleasure to finally meet you. Please come on in!”
Lauren nodded nervously and entered the house. Gaye shut the door and quickly threw her arms around Lauren. At first, Lauren stiffened at the sudden act of affection but quickly gained her composure and returned the hug. Gaye’s motherly attitude was proving to be quite easy for Lauren to get along with.
When Gaye first opened the door, she was taken aback by Lauren’s natural beauty. She was of average height and had gorgeous auburn hair. She looked exhausted but Gaye attributed that to her long hours at the hospital. Right away, she began to think of the reactions the young girl on her doorstep might get from the rowdy bunch of boys downstairs.
Lauren and Gaye walked around the house. They toured the family room (featuring a gorgeous Steinway piano), the kitchen, the sunroom, the deck and the backyard. With each room came and anecdote from Gaye and Lauren fell more in love with every step she took. It was clear that Gaye and her husband had put a lot of love into their home. Sure, it was large but by no means did it feel empty. Gaye’s voice shook Lauren from her thoughts.
“Well, now that you’ve seen the house, I’m sure you want to see what you actually came for. Your apartment!”
“Don’t you mean the apartment?”
“Oh sweetie! Please, this apartment was yours from the very moment I spoke with you on the phone. I figured you would want to see it to confirm it and I wanted you to meet my husband as well.”
Lauren was so relieved to hear that Gaye liked her that much and that she was a shoo in for the apartment. Her excitement almost prevented her from hearing Gaye’s muttered comment.”
“It’s only an added bonus that you get to meet the boys.”

Notes

Chapter 3! Chapter 4 is coming either late tonight or sometime tomorrow. Next up, it's time for Lauren to meet the Stars! EEEK! I'm so excited :)
