NHL One-shots (OPEN FOR REQUESTS)

Sidney Crosby

“Remind me why you’re trying to set me up with someone again?” Megan asked her co-worker Jane as the two sat inside the restaurant waiting for a certain man to walk in.

Megan had started working at the same physical therapy office as Jane about a year ago. At first, the two had been distant because their personalities were totally different. Jane was always optimistic and talkative while Megan was quite timid. However, somehow as time passed, the two women began conversing more often and eventually they became friends.

“I’m setting you up with Sidney because he’s a good friend of mine and he’s a really great guy,” Jane answered the question.

Megan frowned in response. “Is he? You said he’s twenty-eight years old and he hasn’t been in a long lasting relationship before. That doesn’t sound too good to me, especially with how many heartbreaks I’ve been through.”

“Okay. You may think so,” Jane replied, “but the only reasons why he hasn’t been in a long lasting relationship before is because he’s super busy and he kind of keeps to himself. It’s not because he’s a jerk or anything.”

“Great. Well that’s already a lovely thing to look for in a relationship,” Megan said sarcastically. “Super busy and keeps to himself.”

“I didn’t mean it in a bad way. You told me that you like guys who are more on the quiet side,” Jane said with a shrug.

“Well, yeah but ‘super busy’ and ‘kind of keeps to himself’ is a bit too much.”

“Stop worrying. You haven’t even met him yet,” Jane replied nonchalantly.

“Exactly. I’ve never seen him before in my whole life. We might end up hating each other. What if this ends up badly? I’ve never liked the idea of blind dates,” Megan ignored Jane’s request and revealed all of her worries at once.

“Sidney isn’t the bragging type. He’s really humble and genuine. He’s pretty much perfect. I think you two will get along great together,” Jane assured her and as she spoke, a sneaky smile appeared on her face but Megan didn’t notice.

“If he’s so perfect like you say, why do you have to introduce me to him? I mean, can’t he find women easily on his own?”

Jane shook her head. “He doesn’t really have good luck with finding girls…It’s kind of hard to find decent women in his field of work.”

“What kind of work does he-”

“There he is,” Jane interrupted her. She grabbed her male friend’s attention by waving her hand.

When Megan turned around to look at the man Jane wanted to introduce her to, her jaw dropped. How was this possible? This wasn’t real! How could it be?

“You didn’t tell me your friend was Sidney Crosby,” Megan said through her clenched teeth as she quickly turned her head back around to face Jane.

Megan wanted to leave now that she knew who the man was. Meeting him seemed worse than meeting some complete stranger. This was Sidney freaking Crosby for crying out loud. This was the man her hockey loving father and brothers loved so much to watch on the ice. She was nervous as hell.

“I didn’t want you to chicken out!” Jane explained herself. “Plus, I didn’t think you would believe me anyway.”

“Well, you still should have mentioned it to me. I can’t believe this…How in the world?…” She trailed off in the middle of her sentence as Sidney reached the table.

The two women stood up to greet him, one looking excited and the other looking completely anxious.

“Hey. How have you been?” Jane asked excitedly giving him a hug.

“I’ve been all right. You?” he asked with a smile.

“I’ve been doing okay. Same as always,” Jane replied with a small laugh.

As the two friends exchanged greetings and quickly caught up with one another, Megan stood awkwardly waiting for them to notice that she was still there.

“So,” Jane finally said, “let me introduce you two to each other.”

This was when Sidney’s eyes landed onto the other woman and he looked at her for the first time. She was beautiful and he had seen many beautiful women throughout his NHL career. She was different though. She wasn’t overdressed or covered with unnecessary amounts of makeup. She was a natural beauty.

“Sid. This is Megan. And Megan…Um, well you obviously know who he is.”

Megan awkwardly laughed. “Yeah, I guess it’s hard not to know who Sidney Crosby is when your whole family is filled with diehard Penguins fans,” she said before quickly apologizing. “Sorry. That was a bit weird to say, wasn’t it?” She rubbed the back of her neck with her hand sheepishly.

Sidney gave her a genuine smile assuring her that he didn’t think it was weird at all. He was used to it after all those years. “No, it’s completely all right,” he told her.

The group of three naturally sat down by the next minute and Megan was finally able to ask the one question that had been on her mind since the second she had seen Sidney Crosby in the same restaurant as her.

“So how do you two know each other?” Megan asked, dying to know.

How she really wanted to phrase the question was how in the world do you two know each other?! This man was basically a celebrity and Jane was, well, she was just her normal co-worker. How did she know him?

“Remember how I told you about my ex-boyfriend Eric from Canada? Well, he introduced me to Sidney when we were together. We became friends after that. And uh, I might have left out the small detail that Eric also plays in the NHL,” Jane said guiltily.

What was with Jane and all these small details that she was suddenly exposing all at once tonight?

Megan was still trying to understand the whole situation. “Wait. So then is he also on the Pittsburgh Penguins?”

“No. Not anymore. He’s been on the Dallas Stars since about a year ago.”

Wow. Nice to know that now, Jane, Megan thought to herself.

“Okay so now that I’ve introduced you two to each other, I’m going to leave,” Jane said as she suddenly stood up.

“What?!” both Megan and Sidney asked at the same time. Their voices raised up into tones that were higher than usual.

Megan looked at her co-worker incredulously. Was Jane crazy? She was setting her up with someone she didn’t know (Sidney Crosby) and she was leaving her and him alone on a date when they had just met for the first time! This hadn’t been the plan. This whole thing was supposed to be a casual meeting and Jane was supposed to be there!

“Oh, come on!” Jane exclaimed with a roll of her eyes. “You two are adults. Why can’t you even handle being on your own? I promise that you two will have a great time together, okay? Don’t worry. I’ll talk to you guys tomorrow.” The last part of her words were said in a sing-song voice. She was obviously excited about putting the two awkward souls together and leaving them helplessly by themselves.

Once Jane left, Megan couldn’t hide her nervousness as she felt Sidney observing her with curious eyes.

“So-” the two spoke at the same time before they stopped in the middle of their sentences.

Megan felt her face heating up in embarrassment as Sidney awkwardly looked down at the table for a brief moment.

“Why don’t you go first?” she asked cautiously.

“Uh, is this your first time on a blind date?” He attempted to start a conversation.

Megan nodded. “I don’t go out much so Jane decided that it would be a good idea to set me up. What about you?”

“Yeah, same here. You see, I’ve never really been a fan of blind dates.”

“I think most people feel that way,” Megan agreed with a small smile.

She noticed him hesitating before he asked, “Can I just say something?”

Megan nodded for him to continue.

“I don’t want to appear like a jerk so I’ll just tell you now before there are any misunderstandings, which sort of happens a lot with me. I um, I’m not very good at being social…A lot of people think I’m being rude when I don’t talk, but I’m just not the best at starting conversations,” he revealed.

“It’s okay,” Megan said with a laugh. “I understand. I’m kind of the same way.”

The two smiled together relaxing a bit knowing that they were both similar.

“You know what? I’m sorry, but if you don’t mind, is it okay if we go somewhere else?”

“Somewhere else?” Sidney repeated wondering what she had planned in mind.

Megan nodded again. “I’m not really comfortable being in fancy places. It’s all just weird to me. Jane is the one who decided that we should meet here.”

Sidney finally understood what she meant. “Sure,” he shrugged. “To be honest, I don’t like fancy places either. It is slightly uncomfortable.”

“Really?” she asked, surprised that a millionaire didn’t feel comfortable at fancy restaurants.

Sidney smiled in reassurance. “You know, I think Jane’s right. I have a feeling we do have a lot of things in common.”

And yes indeed, they found out that they did have a lot of things in common.

The two had ended up going to a nearby family diner and had a regular evening. They had gotten to learn about each other and although they hadn’t had enough time to tell one another their whole life stories, they were able to figure out just enough to know that things felt almost perfect when they were together. It was a rare case, but the chemistry was real.

Sidney was glad that Megan was just a normal girl and not someone he met as an NHL player. He usually felt burdened whenever a girl he met was a fan or if she was just interested in him because he played professional hockey. Megan was different. He knew that for sure. For the first time, he felt as if he had found a girl to bring home to his parents. She was genuine.

“I’m really glad I met you tonight,” Sidney said as he stood across from Megan.

“Me too,” she replied with a big smile.

“I won’t be here for the next two weeks because of our next few games, but when I’m back, I’d like to see you again,” he said with a hint of hope showing through his tone of voice.

“Don’t worry. I’ll be right here waiting for you, Sidney,” Megan told him and all of his unnecessary doubts faded away. She felt the same way about him as he felt about her.

Megan didn’t know where it came from, but with a sudden boost of confidence she surprised Sidney by kissing him on the cheek. “Thanks for driving me home. I’ll see you soon,” she quickly said before running off into her apartment complex.

Sidney couldn’t help but laugh quietly to himself at how adorable she was. “Yeah. I’ll see you,” he softly said as he watched her disappear into the building.

The two weren’t very experienced with dating and were quite awkward together, but somehow, they were still perfect for each other. Little did they know that Megan would be Mrs. Crosby in just less than three years.

Notes

Sorry for taking so long to update (if anyone cares)! I had three exams in one week so I was studying my ass off and then I lost motivation to write for a few days…It’s hard not to get so easily depressed when you’re in college, living in a new area, commuting back and forth from home to school, and all of your friends are away at different schools. I feel so lonely these days, but I’ll make it through! Now I have to start preparing for my final exams so I might not update quickly, but I will definitely try! Thanks for reading and please leave feedback :)

Please copy and paste this little request section and fill it out in the comments if you would like to leave a request! Once again, thanks for reading!
