A Shot in the Dark

Surprise

PATRICK’S POV
I have never been so pissed in my life. Was it really her that I just saw? Of course it was her. I’d know that hair anywhere. Why didn’t she tell me she was coming? I could’ve gotten her from the airport. Maybe she doesn’t know that I live here. What the hell, my face is all over this city. If she doesn’t know I’m here, she oblivious to the world. And why the hell won’t Jacqueline answer her damn phone?
“Hey Patty” her soft voice finally came over the speaker
“Don’t you dare ‘Hey Patty’ me,” I yelled, ”You have more than a lot of explaining to do.”
She sighed as if she already knew what I was talking about. “So you found her huh?”
At this point I wasn’t angry just shocked and hurt. I haven't seen Taylor in years. After the break up she completely cut me out of her life which was not what I intended. I truly believed that I did not have enough time for a girlfriend. That year was when I realized I had some real talent and that if I wanted to make it big, I was going to have to focus on nothing but hockey and school. That meant no skipping practice to see Taylor. And no skipping class to go get burgers from the local diner with her either.
Breaking up with Taylor was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. Who wants to break the one heart that they’re supposed to keep safe? I really wanted to see her again and make things up with her. The way we left things was not good. Taylor didn’t talk to me all of senior year, and honestly, as my hockey career started taking off, I kind of pushed Taylor out of my mind, just like she pushed me out of her life. But now that she was living in Chicago, all of my memories with her came flowing back.
“Yeah her. Apparently she moved the Chicago a few days ago. I wouldn’t believe it if I hadn’t seen her myself when I was out at my goodbye lunch with Amanda just now before she goes home for week.” I said, remembering how mad I was at Jackie for not telling me.
“Well did you talk to her?”
“I couldn’t. It’s been so long. I don’t even know what I would say to her. And plus I was with Amanda, I don’t know how she would react to that.”
“Well Amanda is cool, I doubt she would freak out about you talking to her. The question is how do you feel about her being here?”
“I have no idea. I miss her so much, but a part of me was finally getting over not being best friends with her anymore and then she just shows up.”
“So you found her Pat?” She asked quietly.
“Of course I found her! How could you not tell me this Jackie!” I said, the anger in my voice rising.
“Pat, she said that she didn’t want you to know. She’s scared of seeing you again after all of your history together.” She said quietly.
I was furious. “Well Jackie, you might have wanted to at least given me a warning so I don’t mess things up again!” I spat at her, and hung up the phone while walking into the locker room at Johnny’s Ice House. It was a 3 PM practice, and right now all I wanted to do was to get my frustration out.
“What’s wrong Kaner?” Jonathan Toews, the captain, and my best friend said. “Girl troubles?”
I honestly wasn’t in the mood to talk about it, but I knew Johnny wouldn’t let it go.
“Remember the girl Taylor I told you about?”
“The one from back in Buffalo?”
he’s staying and you guys can talk about it.”
“This city is packed with people. I’ll probably never run into her again.”
“We both know that’s not true. And aren’t your sisters best friends with her? It shouldn’t be that hard to find her. Just text one the those hot sisters of yours. I’m sure they’ll tell you.”
“Shut the hell up Toews.” he was testing the patience that I did not have. “My sisters are way out of your league. And don’t you have that dumb blond bimbo anyway?”
“Lindsey is very educated. And she’s not a bimbo.” he said defensively.
“Whatever. Jackie said Tay doesn’t want to see me or she’s scared or something like that.”
“Okay well we know she’s not going to come to you, so you have to find her.” He said, knowing that I would need some help.
“I’ll try. But I doubt I’ll figure it out.”
“Coach wants you guys on the ice.” Seabrook screamed through the door.
“Okay Pat, it will all be ok, just focus on hockey right now.” Jon said, and he went back to his Captain Serious attitude.
I rushed out onto the ice, and I was thankful for the distraction. The problem was, Taylor kept popping into my mind, which affected my hockey play. I kept messing up drills, until eventually Coach Q told me to just go back to the locker room. It was obvious he knew something was up, but I knew he wasn’t going to question me about it unless it affected my play during games. That was the last thing I wanted. A couple minutes later, the rest of the guys came into the locker room, tired after a long practice. After we were all dressed, Jon came back over to me.
“Hey Pat, Lindsey and I are going to Chicago Cut tonight. Since Amanda is out of town, I know you’re free. Come with us!” He said, knowing I needed some time away from my thoughts. I quickly agreed, knowing that even if I didn’t want to go, Jon would force me. I headed back to my apartment in Trump Tower. I still had a couple hours until I had to meet Jon and Lindsey, so I took a nap when I got home. I woke up a few hours later, and quickly got dressed and walked over to Chicago Cut. I was excited for tonight and not having to think about Taylor, or so I thought…..
