Russian Roulette
11:
“You still haven’t slept together yet?” Elias asks shocked. We sat eating our lunch in the deserted hallway.
“It’s really none of your business,” I tell him stiffly.
“So what, are you doing the five date thing?” Matt asks.
“No. I’ll know when I know okay?” I say annoyed.
“I still can’t believe you’re officially his girlfriend,” Elias says shaking his head.
“Yeah and apparently I’m officially a wag too which by the way I didn’t sign up for,” I say with my mouth full.
“Relax you’ll be fine, what are you scared of?” Matt asks.
“Women. I’m scared of women. They don’t like me,” I tell them.
“Women don’t like you because they’re threatened by you because you’re smart and hot. You usually get to be one or the other,” Elias informs me.
“Yeah except these are the wives and girlfriends of professional athletes, they’re all hot.”
“You’re just going there to make friends, stop overthinking everything,” Matt tells me. I get a page and head to the E.R for a consult.
I arrived at Consol that evening and I was nervous. Beau gave me directions to the wives box and I slowly made my way there. I walk in and there are tons of women scattered around. I stand there awkwardly until an attractive woman with brown hair smiles at me.
“You must be Quinn, I’m Veronique but you can call me Vero. My husband is Marc-Andre,” she says warmly.
“Hi it’s nice to meet you,” I say smiling. I look around and everyone looks so shiny and happy. I look down at my black jeans and black leather jacket and realize I’m literally the black sheep.
“Here I’ll introduce you to some people, this is Carole-Lynne wife of Pascal, Maureen wife of Chris, Catherine wife of other Kris, Malin wife of Patric, and Kristin wife of Jeff. Everyone this is Quinn, Geno’s girlfriend.” Everyone in the room turns to look at me and I wish I could disappear.
“It’s so nice to finally meet you,” Maureen says smiling.
“Wow we’ve heard so much about you,” Carole-Lynne says warmly. I make small talk with the wives until the game starts. I grab a seat in the stands and spot Geno right away. I feel someone sit down beside and a short girl with brown hair smiles at me.
“Hi I’m Georgann, I’m dating Beau,” she says smiling.
“Oh wow hi, it’s nice to meet you,” I reply.
“He never shuts up about you. He calls you the miracle doctor.”
I start laughing and she joins in.
“It’s pretty intimidating meeting everyone but it’s a really great group of girls. I know other teams wag groups can get pretty catty.”
“Yeah I was wondering about that,” I say honestly.
“So how did you and Geno meet?” she asks.
“Well initially we met a bar but we didn’t reconnect until Beau hurt his wrist and Geno came to the hospital with him.”
“I’ll have to tell Beau that something positive came out of hurting his wrist,” she says smiling. We spend the rest of the game getting to know each other and at the end of the game I realize it wasn’t horrible socializing. I go down to the player’s locker room and wait for Geno. He comes out wearing a suit and his hair is still wet from the shower.
“You look good in a suit,” I tell him.
“How was wags?” he asks.
“Good actually.” He smiles and leans down to kiss me. “Wanna come over?”
“Da. We start Russian lesson.”
“ангел,” I say smiling.
“Know what that means?”
“Angel. My mom used to call me that.” He squeezes my hand and we walk to the parking garage.
We get to the apartment and I change into my pj’s. We get under the covers and I open Netflix.
“Why you leave so early that morning?” he asks out of the blue.
“Because I felt guilty. I had a boyfriend and I didn’t know you liked me like that,” I tell him. Our movie starts playing and I curl up beside him and not even twenty minutes later I fall asleep on his chest.
“Wake up,” I whisper in his ear. I start planting kisses on his face and he opens his eyes.
“What’s time?” he asks, his voice raspy.
“5:00 a.m. I have to work,” I tell him.
“So early,” he grunts but he stands up. He gets his coat on and he drives me to the hospital.
“Bye, have a good day,” I say smiling.
“Bye Quinn,” he replies. He drives off and I head into the hospital.
I’m talking to a nurse about a patient when I hear someone clear their throat behind me. The nurse blushes and excuses herself and I turn around to see Dr. Hunter is standing there smiling. Every nurse and female patient was in love with Dr. Hunter and I had to admit he was charming when you first meet him but he was very cocky.
“Hi Dr. Hunter, can I help with you with anything?” I ask politely.
“Actually you can. Dr. Reid said I could have you for the day. I have a patient who crushed his hand in a meat grinder,” he says smiling. It seemed serious so I didn’t understand why he was smiling. He passes me the x-rays and I see that the patient has four broken metacarpals and three severed fingers.
“Yikes,” I say while reading his chart.
“Yeah so I need an orthopedic surgeon to fix the hand before I attach the fingers. I figure if you’re up for it you can assist me with the reattachment as well.”
“Yeah I’m definitely up for it,” I tell him.
“Great, I have a feeling we’ll be a great team. I’ll take you to meet him.” He leads us to the patient’s room and there’s an attractive middle-aged man sitting on the bed holding his bandaged hand.
“Edward this is Dr. Eriksson. She’ll be helping me fix your hand this afternoon,” Dr. Hunter tells the patient.
“You look too young to be a surgeon,” Edward says awkwardly.
“Trust me you want her. She’s the best. Coming from a plastic surgeon she’s the only one I would allow to work on me,” Dr. Hunter says smiling.
“Okay,” Edward says nodding his head. We explain the surgery to him and Dr. Hunter tells me he’ll page me when it’s time to operate. I go to the cafeteria and find Matt and Elias talking to the resident from peds. I sit down with my tray and the resident gets up and leaves.
“Wow does everyone hate me?” I ask annoyed.
“Adams? Nah he’s just too shy to talk to you. Hey congrats on the surgery,” Matt says smiling.
“Yeah my surgery. I was supposed to scrub in on the reattachment,” Elias whines.
“He only asked me because I’d already be in there fixing the hand,” I tell him.
“That or he wants to get in your pants,” Elias smirks.
“Man it freaks me out how similar you and Dr. Hunter are. You’re both womanizing plastic surgeons who need your ego’s boosted on an hourly basis.
“Like Matt’s any better,” he says frowning.
“Matt’s a cardiothoracic surgeon, he already knows he’s the best and he’s straight up with the women he sleeps with,” I reply.
“Thanks for sticking up for me buddy,” Matt says smiling.
“Yeah well you’re the overconfident ortho tease,” Elias says smirking.
“Is that what people think of me?” I ask shocked.
“I thought you knew that,” Elias says awkwardly.
“What because I don’t sleep with anyone here suddenly I’m a tease and overconfident my ass god this hospital needs more female doctors,” I say exasperatedly. It was hard being one of the few females. I felt like no one took me seriously and that I had to work twice as hard to prove myself. I loved my friends I really did but even I couldn’t deal with their sexist remarks. My pager goes off and I roll my eyes at the thought of Dr. Hunter. I get up without saying good-bye and head to the O.R. to get scrubbed in.
Can't wait for the next part :)
