Russian Roulette
28: On the tip of my tongue
Me and Elias were officially called back into work but that didn’t stop us from stopping by Matt’s room at every chance we got. On our break we head to Matt’s room and I climb on bed beside him after I check his vitals. His room was filled with flowers from all of the nurse’s that were in love with him. I turn the TV on and we watch the Penguins game.
“You should know, my favourite flowers are the ones from Geno,” he says smiling.
“I’ll be sure to tell him that,” I laugh. All of a sudden a bottle blonde nurse comes in and checks Matt’s vitals.
“Be sure to call me if you need anything,” she says suggestively. I roll my eyes and Elias grins.
“Must be hard being you,” Elias says smiling.
“It’s not bad,” Matt shrugs.
“So who’s everyone dating these days?” I ask them casually.
“I was hooking up with this peds nurse but she hasn’t called me back,” Elias says frowning.
“No one lately,” Matt responds.
“That’s too bad. We should all go on a triple date once,” I suggest.
“That’s a great idea!” Elias says excitedly. The horn goes off and they show Geno scoring a power play goal.
“Wooo!” I cheer loudly.
“What a beauty,” Elias says impressed.
“How are you and Geno?” Matt asks.
“We're great! We're in such a good place right now,” I respond.
“Have you slept with him yet?” Elias asks.
“Obviously," I reply.
“I don’t blame you, I wouldn’t wait either,” Elias says smiling. Me and Matt give him a weird look and he just shrugs. The horn goes off again and Beau scores a beautiful backhander. I get a page and I say goodbye to the guys and head to the E.R.
I get to the basement and Cohen gives me the file and x-rays. I walk over to bed 4 and open the curtain.
“Hi Adrian, I’m Dr. Eriksson, it looks like you broke your arm,” I say warmly.
“Yeah. It was really stupid. I was snowboarding and put my arms out to break my fall,” she says shaking her head.
“Sucks when your instincts end up getting you injured,” I say smiling.
“I happened so fast. I don’t even like snowboarding, I just went because my boyfriend wanted to go.”
“Well it’s a clean break so you won’t be needing surgery,” I tell her. I set her arm and put it in a cast and discharge her and I spent the rest of the night helping Cohen in the E.R. and updating patient charts.
A few weeks later Matt was discharged and he would be back operating soon. The Penguins were one of the top teams in the east and I was enjoying my last year as a resident. Since Matt’s accident, I was seeing everything in a whole new light. Life was short and you needed to make the most of it while you still had a chance. I had moved back in with Geno officially and I was helping out more in the E.R.
I walk to the deserted hallway one day where Elias is eating his lunch.
“It’s been awhile since we sat here,” I tell him.
“I’m avoiding someone,” he tells me.
“Who?”
“This nurse I slept with. I was supposed to call her but I didn’t.” I swat him and he winces.
“Stop sleeping with nurses! They hate you then they hate me by association.”
“My bad,” he says guiltily.
“I miss Matt.”
“Yeah it feels lonely without him.” We talk about our upcoming surgeries and the latest procedures in the medical world. Reid pages me so I ditch my tray and head to his office.
“Ah Dr. Eriksson, meet Dr. Jameson. He’s an orthopaedic surgeon from Seattle and he’s here to teach you a new procedure and what not so he’ll stick with you for the day,” he says smiling. He was tall with brown hair that was tucked behind his ears. He had green eyes and a killer smile but I got a cocky vibe from him. I see him look me up and down and I outstretch my hand.
“It’s nice to meet you,” I say politely.
“Wow, Dr. Eriksson, I’ve heard great things,” he says smiling. I lead him to our skills lab and he shows me a new technique used during arthroscopic surgery, which I had read about but never practiced. I get a page and I suddenly feel awkward.
“Do you want to come?” I ask.
“Sure,” he says smiling. We head to the patient’s room where I would be operating on a bone tumour.
“Hi Jackson, nice to see you again. This is Dr. Jameson, he’s with me for the day,” I say warmly.
“Nice to meet you,” the kid replies.
“So we’ll be taking out the tumour in your femur today, are you nervous?”
“Nope,” he says confidently.
“That’s what I like to hear.” I go over the procedure with him and his parents and they sign the consent paper. I head to the O.R. and Dr. Jameson is on my heels.
“I’ll scrub in if you don’t mind. The surgery is all yours though,” he tells me. He taught me the new procedure so I don’t know why I was supposed to babysit him. We get scrubbed in and I excise the tumour in a few hours.
“Great gob Eriksson. Really well done,” Jameson says impressed.
“Thanks,” I reply. My shift ends and I finally get to go home. I was excited to see Geno, being with him was without a doubt the highlight of my day.
“G?” I call out when I get home.
“In here,” he calls from the living room. I walk in and him and Sid are watching hockey.
“Sup Sid,” I say casually.
“Hey how was work?” he asks.
“Weird. I had some weirdo follow me around all day.” They both look at me concerned and I smile.
“He was a doctor and I was supposed to shadow him but he only taught me one thing.”
“For a second there I thought you had your own stalker,” Sid says smiling. He gets up and puts his coat on. I was secretly happy he was leaving because I rarely got alone time with Geno.
“Well I should go. It was nice seeing you Quinn. G I’ll see you at practice tomorrow, don’t be late,” he warns. He leaves and I drag Geno upstairs.
He walks up to me and plants a soft kiss on my lips. I deepen the kiss and push him so he’s sitting on the bed. I sit on his lap and my tongues dances with his. I pull away and take my shirt off and he traces my incision scar where I got spleen out. I kiss him with everything I have in me and in that moment, everything feels right. We sit there for a while, not rushing anything. My lips felt numb but I didn’t care. I had gone months without being able to touch him before. He pulls away and looks deeply into my eyes and my heart swells. I didn’t know it was possible to be this in love with someone. I knew forever wouldn’t be enough with him but I had to make the most of it. He tucks my hair behind my ear and we lean our foreheads against each other. It happened before I could stop it. The timing seemed wrong but I didn’t care. I look him the eyes and the words are on the tip of my tongue.
“Marry me.”
Can't wait for the next part :)
