Russian Roulette

I wake up and I barely make it to the toilet in time. I throw up repeatedly a few times before I finally flush. I stand up and turn around only to find Geno standing there with a concerned look on his face.

“You okay?” he asks.

“No,” I mumble. My head is killing my and I feel like I just got ran over. I take a quick shower and get ready for work.

“You look terrible,” Elias says in the locker room.

“I feel terrible,” I reply. I had worn my largest pair of sunglasses to work, and even though I had showered I could still feel the tequila in my pores.

“Quinn you’re not even not even supposed to be drinking,” Matt says annoyed. He was right. I technically wasn’t supposed to be drinking yet because of my liver but I figured my body healed faster than most.

“You should get your blood work done just to check your liver enzymes,” Elias says seriously.

“Okay I will. Let’s do it now so I can get it over with.” Matt grabs supplies and quickly takes a vial of blood and sends it off to the lab. I wasn’t too worried about it. If my liver enzymes were high I would just know that I’m not ready to drink yet. I get scrubbed in and preform a knee athroscopy and meniscectomy. I finish the surgery and grab lunch and head to the cafeteria. I notice the buzz around the cafeteria and everyone seems to be talking about something

“Hey guy’s what’s up?” I ask as I sit down.

“Did you hear about Jefferson?” Elias asks excitedly.

“You mean black widow? No I didn’t hear about her,” I reply.

“She got caught sleeping with an intern,” Matt interjects.

“No way!” I say shocked.

“Yeah. She’s not fired or anything but I think it’s frowned upon,” Elias tells us.

“Looks like she caught her prey,” I say smiling. Jefferson was the ob-gyn attending and she got her nickname from her black hair, red glasses and scary personality.

“Who was the intern?” Matt asks.

“That Nillson guy. Super tall and lanky. I’m kind of jealous I won’t lie,” Elias laughs. I can’t help but shake my head at the news. This hospital always had some sort of drama or scandal going on so I wasn’t surprised. I finish my sandwich and head to the clinic where I see patients and take x-rays. I get a page to the E.R. so I head to the basement. Cohen hands me a patient file and I read that the patient has a broken collarbone. I walk into the first bay and open the curtain and find a young teen in hockey gear.

“Hi I’m Dr. Eriksson, can you tell me what happened?” I ask him.

“I got checked going into the boards. Hey your Malkin’s fiancée,” he says smiling. His statement totally catches me off guard and I suddenly feel awkward.

“Uh yeah, how’d you know?” I ask hesitantly.

“The internet,” he shrugs. He immediately winces and I inspect his shoulder.

“Try to stay still. I think your subclavian artery is lacerated.” I tell Dr. Cohen to prep him for surgery immediately and to page me when they’re ready. I head to Reid’s office and notice he’s gone so I sit in the chair behind the desk and type in the password. I go to google and search ‘Evgeni Malkin Quinn Eriksson’ and sure enough a ton of photos pop up. Some were from my instagram but others were shots people took of us while we were in out in public doing different things. It was weird being with a celebrity. I get a page from Cohen and head back to the E.R. I walk downstairs and the boy’s parents are now with him. I go over the procedure with them and his mother signs the consent form.

“You ready?” I ask him.

“Yeah I think so,” he replies. He gets wheeled into the O.R. and I get scrubbed in.
I finish setting the fracture and repair the artery. I scrub out and find Elias had paged me while I was in surgery. I find him at the nurse’s station hitting on a nurse.

“Dr. Dixon could I get a moment?” I ask politely. He winks at the nurse and she blushes and walks away.

“You paged?”

“I have a smashed arm with your name on it. Dual team surgery,” he says while handing me the patient file. The patient was in a bad motorcycle accident and had his arm smashed. There were a lot of breaks and tissue damage and I knew this would take awhile. I look at the clock and debate whether I should take this case.

“Come on, you know you want to. Plus you need to log more surgeries.”

“Okay fine,” I say giving in. He smiles and we head to the O.R. to scrub in.

Six hours later we finish the surgery. I feel exhausted so me and Elias go up to the gallery to watch Matt do a cardiomyoplasty.

“Man that was an awesome surgery. We totally saved that guy’s arm,” Elias says proudly.

“Dual team back at it again,” I smile.

“What other surgery did you do today?” he asks.

“Knee surgery and clavicle fracture repair. Some young hockey player who knew me as Malkin’s fiancée.”

“Wow. You’re famous.”

“It was so weird. I googled us and there are like pictures that people take of us in public when we’re not looking. Like I’m used to people coming up to Geno and asking for pictures but creeper shots of me?” I look at Elias and he just laughs.

“Comes with the territory I guess,” he says shrugging.

“By the way we’re getting married in Russia this summer.”

“Cool I’m down.” The monitor starts beeping and the patient is hypotensive. Matt stays focused and finds the bleeding and cauterizes it. Everyone in the gallery returns to their conversations and Matt finishes the surgery. Completely drained from the day I head in the locker room with Elias and grab my sweater and keys. The door swings open and Matt stands there with a piece a paper.

“I got your test results back,” he says seriously.

“What is it bad?” I ask panicked.

“You’re pregnant.”
