Russian Roulette

40: Wedding day

I hear my phone alarm go off and I open my eyes. Today was the day. I smell something cooking so I head to the kitchen. I open my bedroom door and the apartment is bustling with activity. James, Audrina, Elias and Matt are all eating breakfast in the kitchen.

“There she is!” Elias exclaims. I look at him closely and I can tell he has a glow to him.

“You totally got laid last night,” I smile. He turns red and shrugs. I look at Matt and he looks the same.

“Let me guess, you invited her over but nothing happened?” I ask him.

“Okay that’s creepy,” Elias laughs. I grab a plate of food and pull up a seat at the table. I look at Audrina and she looks rough.

“How are you feeling buddy?” I ask her.

“Terrible. I’m sorry you had to take care of me last night. It was supposed to be your night,” she says sadly.

“No worries. I had fun,” I reassure her. The doorbell rings so James answers it. Anastasia walks in wearing a tracksuit and had large rollers in her hair.

“Is wedding day!” she exclaims. I finish my breakfast and quickly shower. I blow-dry my hair and Audrina curls it into big loose curls. She styles it into half up half down with the top half in a braid. Anastasia does my make-up and I’m surprised at how well it turns out. I had light peach eye shadow on my lids and white eye shadow in my inner corner and my long lashes were curled and coated with mascara. My ghostly complexion was covered with tinted foundation and my cheeks had a subtle blush to them. I look in the mirror and I’m amazed. I don’t think I’ve ever looked better in my life and I secretly wish I had Audrina and Anastasia do my hair and make-up everyday. I get my dress on and Audrina zips it up and places my veil in my hair. I turn around and wait for their reactions. Audrina’s eyes immediately start watering so I go up and I hug her.

“Don’t cry, you’re going to make me cry,” I chuckle.

“You’re so beautiful Quinn,” she says sniffling.

“So beautiful, wow,” Anastasia adds. I walk into the kitchen where the guys are all ready.

“Quinn you look stunning,” Matt says smiling.

“I’m speechless,” Elias adds.

“You look great,” James agrees.

“Thanks boys.” I hear the doorbell ring and I suddenly get nervous. It was him. Audrina and Anastasia who are both now ready answer the door excitedly. The first Russian wedding tradition was the ransom. The groom had to pay a ransom in order to pick me up. I overhear Anastasia ask him different riddles in Russian and she makes him do a bunch of different dances. Elias puts on the extra veil we bought sits on the couch. I have to hide in the bedroom waiting for Geno to find me. I overhear him pay the ransom and a few moments later I hear a bunch of people start laughing. I figure he must have found Elias. The door knocks softly and I open it. Geno goes slack jawed when he sees me and I can’t help but smile.

“Wow. Look beautiful,” he tells me. His groomsmen come in and start cheering and pouring everyone a glass of champagne except for me.

After the champagne we head to the registry office where we will become husband and wife. Normally this is where we head to an Orthodox church for an optional ceremony, but since we have proof that we’ve been having premarital sex, we decided to skip it. We get there and at the threshold of the registry office we are gathered by family and friends. We head inside and sign a legal document. The female representative asks us if we voluntarily take each other to be man and wife. I look up at Geno and he has the biggest smile on his face.

“я делаю (I do,)” I say smiling.

“я делаю,” Geno tells her. He slides the ring on my ring finger on my right hand and I do the same.

“Объявляю вас мужем и женой, Вы можете поцеловать свою невесту, (I now pronounce you man and wife. You can kiss your bride,)” she tells Geno. He cups my face and plants a soft kiss on my lips. He pulls away and I can’t stop smiling. It was official. I was this amazing man’s wife. We get back out onto the street where all our guests are waiting. You wouldn’t know that only the groom’s guests are here. Geno has enough family and friends for the both of us.

“Wow that was literally ten minutes,” Elias says shocked.

“Russian tradition,” I reply. Everyone drinks more champagne and Natalia hands me a water bottle and I hug her and thank her. The limo pulls up and me, Geno and our wedding party get in. It’s a tradition to go on a tour of the cities historic sites. We stop at Red Square, Grave of the Unknown Soldier and Sparrow Hills. At each stop our photographer gets out with us and snaps a few photos.

We head to the most expensive hotel in Moscow where our reception is. Geno had told me that Russian receptions lasted for a minimum of two days so I mentally prepared myself for the craziness that was abut to unfold. Most of Geno’s groomsmen were already intoxicated so they start the party off. I sit down at a large table with Geno and laugh at the men dancing. I feel Geno put his hand on my stomach and I look at him.

“How baby,” he asks,

“Happy,” I respond. He leans in to kiss me and I hear everyone start cheering. I pull away embarrassed and Geno just laughs. Geno’s best man and delivers a hilarious toast about Geno. My stomach hurts from laughing and I’m wiping away tears by the end of it. Natalia and Vladimir come up to us holding a large piece of bread. The tradition was that the groom and bride bite off a piece and whosoevers piece is the largest is supposed to be dominant in their life together. Excitedly we both take the biggest bite we can but mine was clearly the biggest. Geno frowns and I kiss his cheek.
The fun begins with loads of alcohol for the guests, toasts, strange competitions, gift giving, dancing, singing and lots of food. At midnight Geno takes me around and introduces me to everyone. I’m mentally and physically drained but I tough it out and put on my best smile. We get to the Penguins table and I’m excited to talk to people I know. Sid, Beau, Kris, Brooks, Matt, Brandon, and Flower all made the trip.

“Hey it’s Mrs. Malkin,” Flower exclaims. It felt weird to hear but I definitely liked the sound of it.

“How are you guy’s enjoying the party?” I ask.

“It’s great!’ Beau slurs.

“How’s the pregnancy,” Sidney asks.

“It’s good. We’re having a boy,” I smile. They all say congratulations and I sit down and catch up for a little while. After a bit I notice people walking outside. Geno suddenly appears and takes my hand.

“Come,” he says excitedly. I follow him outside and I hear it before I see it. We get onto the street and there are fireworks in the sky. I don’t know how he knew, but I loved fireworks. I stand in front of him with his hands on my stomach and I can’t remember a time that I’ve felt this happy.
