Joe Colborne One-Shots

We Can't Dance

Grumbling under his breath, Joe struggled with his tie as he stood in front of the hallway’s mirror.
“Need help?” you asked, approaching your boyfriend. You pushed his hands away and swiftly tied his tie for him. “I can’t believe how you’re struggling when you’ve probably been in suits more often than any normal person.”
He tilted his head left and looked over at you with a pout. “I hate weddings,” he murmured.
You gently pinched his cheek, smiling at how adorable he was behaving. “C’mon. It’s your cousin’s wedding. It’ll be fun.”
“No, it won’t.”
“Have you ever been to a wedding with me?” you asked, grabbing his hands and dragging him backwards towards the dining hall. You smiled while he kept pouting.
“No.”
“Then no surprise you’ve never had fun!” you exclaimed. “You never went with me.”
His eyebrows rose and his lips quivered as he evidently struggled to keep a grin off his face. “Is that so?” he inquired amusedly, pulling you towards him and against his side, as he draped an arm around your waist.
You nodded firmly, wrapping one of your arms around his waist and resting your head against his shoulder. “We are going to have an amazing night.”
He mock sighed, dropped his head, and mumbled, “If you put it like that, then I guess you’re right.”
“I’m always right,” you chimed, playfully pinching his side (he gave a small jump in response). “Now, what’s your cousin’s name again?”
“Mark, and his new bride is Wendy.”
Mark and Wendy,” you repeated under your breath with an affirmative nod for yourself. As sad as it was that you needed the reminder of your boyfriend’s family’s names, at least these family members weren’t close to Joe and were the types that would only be seen at big family gatherings like weddings or funerals, so it was a reasonable enough excuse to not remember their names. What was even more sad was when Joe received the invitation and didn’t even recognize the names until he called up his mother. You bit back an amused smile when you faintly caught Joe repeating their names to himself.
You pulled away from his side, but kept a hold of his hand when you both entered the dining room. Your eyes immediately landed on a breathtaking, puffy, white dress and you realized that that was where Joe was guiding you to.
“Congratulations!” Joe said formerly, dropping your hand to place his hands on the bride’s shoulders and kiss her cheek before pulling back to shake hands with who you assumed was the groom. As you introduced yourself and congratulated the bride, he said to the groom, “Mark, you got yourself a beautiful bride.”
“Thank you,” the man in the tux responded, brightly grinning. His eyes immediately flickered over to you, and you took the opportunity to introduce yourself and congratulate him as well. He swiftly thanked you then the both of you for attending. “We’re happy you both could make it.”
“We wouldn’t miss it for the world,” Joe responded, resting a hand on the lower portion of your back. “Sorry that we came late.”
Mark shook his head. “Don’t worry ‘bout it. You’re a busy professional hockey player, I completely understand.”
Joe wryly smiled, and you immediately jumped in, “Yeah, everything’s just so hectic as of lately. Sorry again. We’re gonna leave you lovebirds – don’t wanna hold you up.” You stepped back and started towards the table with Joe’s parents and sisters.
“Clearly, they don’t watch hockey,” your boyfriend grunted when you both were far enough. “It’s post-season.”
You weakly smiled and soothingly rubbed his arm. “Next year, babe. Next year,” you murmured. Not making it to the playoffs was pretty much a taboo – you acknowledge, but don’t blatantly point out not making it to the playoffs. It was somewhat a sore subject.
“Y/N, you look gorgeous!” Joe’s mother gushed when you were in hearing distance. “Honestly, every time I look at Wendy, I see you at the alter in a big, white dress, saying ‘I do’ to my son.”
Joe, clearly distracted from the post-season conversation, nervously laughed as he pulled out your seat beside his sister, Lauren, before taking his seat between you and his mother. “Ma, calm down. We’re not talkin’ ‘bout marriage yet.”
Yet,” Joe’s mother and you chimed simultaneously. She was dead serious while you were more playful.
“Ma, leave ‘em alone,” Lauren hollered. “You do look gorgeous, though, Y/N.”
“Thanks,” you responded. “What did we miss?”
“The introductions and the first dance. Nothing much,” she responded, waving a dismissive hand. She turned her head away when their other sister, Melissa, whispered something in her ear.
“Wanna go dance?” you asked, looking back at your boyfriend, who looked absolutely miserable being berated by his mother.
He met your eyes, and you caught the nervousness in those gray orbs. “Dance?” he echoed, rubbing the back of his neck. “I don’t know, Y/N…”
You grinned devilishly and stood up, catching his hands. “C’mon. I told you you were going to have a fun time with me, and you betcha I’m gonna make that happen!”
“I’m not good at dancing, though,” he mumbled sheepishly, but followed you to the dance floor nevertheless.
“Neither am I! When in doubt, just twirl and spin me as much as possible.”
The moment you hit the dance floor, you both burst out laughing after barely a few attempts of dance moves. You collapsed against Joe’s chest, and he hugged you against his chest.
“We can’t dance for shit,” he wheezed through laughter, and you nodded in agreement.
“We really can’t.” You peeled back a bit to find the silly grin on his face and couldn’t resist smiling back. “I’m having fun. What about you?”
He dipped his head and pressed his lips against yours for a quick, yet soft and gentle kiss. After pulling away, he resisted his forehead against yours and murmured, “I’m always having fun with you.”
