We've Got This

Chapter 2

Tyler’s P.O.V.

I didn’t even get her name, let alone her phone number, before she and her friends ran out of the bar. Even after the short conversation that we just had, I could tell that she was different; a good different. She wasn’t throwing herself at me and trying to get with me just to say that she did it. She treated me like a regular person, which I found very refreshing. I knew that I wanted to get to know her more and maybe even be friends, but who knows if I’m ever even going to see her again.

Right after the girls left, some guy came over to me. “Hey, that girl you were talking to, where did she go?” he asked, but I couldn’t quite place his intensions.

Something didn’t seem right, so I decided to play it safe. “I don’t know. All I know is that they left,” I replied. He huffed and rushed out of the bar, and I decided to follow him.

Normal P.O.V.

After we grabbed Amanda and got out of the bar we frantically tried to hail a cab. As one was pulling up, I heard the bone-chilling voice. “Jean!” he shouted, and I screamed as he started to run at us. We all piled into the cab and told the driver where to go just as he was getting to us.

It was then that I burst into tears. “How the fuck did he know we were here?” I screamed. “This is absolutely fan-fucking-tastic,” I seethed, finally calming down, the fear turning into anger. “There I was, having a good conversation with a nice guy, and something had to go horribly wrong. That’s just my luck,” I continued, rubbing my forehead, trying to stave off a headache. “Is he following us?” I asked.

“No, I don’t think so,” Amanda said, turning around and looking out the back window if the cab. I nodded and tried to relax.

The coast seemed clear for the rest of the ride back to the house, as well as when we got there. As a result, we felt comfortable enough to go to bed. It was a warm night for early April, and so I decided to leave my window open to let the breeze in as I took my contacts out and got into bed. Boy was that a mistake.

Tyler’s P.O.V.

I managed to keep up with the guy without being seen. I couldn’t figure out why I was following this guy; all I knew was that I didn’t want anything bad to happen to that girl, and I had the feeling that something bad was indeed going to happen either way. I quickly got into my car just as his cab was pulling away.

He went all the way out into the suburbs, and the weirdest part was that it was my neighborhood. In fact, he stopped at the house directly across the street from me. I then made the decision to just go inside and wait it out, just watching through my front window. That way I could step in as soon as whatever was going to happen got out of hand.

He got out of the cab and went to the front door, pounding on it. “Jean! I know you’re in there! Get your ass out here now!” he screamed. So, her name was Jean. Pretty.

Normal P.O.V.

Shortly after getting into bed I heard a loud pounding on the front door and screaming. “Jean! I know you’re in there! Get your ass out here now!” Shit, he knew where we were staying.

I quickly put my glasses on and got out of bed and opened the door to the balcony, looking down at him. “How the fuck did you find out where we were staying?” I shouted, my blood starting to boil. I was so tired of his shit. “You need to get the fuck out of here, Tommy!”

“You need to get the fuck down here before I come in there!” he replied.

I huffed, knowing he wasn’t bluffing, so I went back into the room and found Amanda and Nicole waiting for me in the hallway. “You guys need to call the cops,” I said, walking right past them. “I’m probably about to get my ass kicked,” I added, heading down the stairs and to the front door.

I took a deep breath before slowly opening the door. He just stared at me sternly. “Why did you leave me?” he pressed.

I sighed. “I broke up with you a year ago, why are you still hung up on me?” I asked, trying to keep my distance.

“You’re still mine! That’s why!” he shouted. “We’re not over until I say we’re over, do you hear me?” he screamed, lunging at me. “You little slut! You left me for someone else!” he continued, grabbing me and pulling me outside.

“No I didn’t!” I shouted. “I dumped you because you’re controlling and insane!” I tried getting out of his grip, but it was no use; he just dragged me into the yard. “Let go of me!” I screamed. “Tommy stop!”

He then pulled me up to look him in the eyes, all six-foot-five of him. “You think you can have someone better than me?” he shouted, and his fist connected with my face, dropping me instantly. “You think anyone else could ever care for you like I did? You’re nothing without me!” he screamed, now kicking me in the sides and trying to get my face again. I couldn’t see, because his initial punch knocked my glasses off, so I couldn’t defend myself in the dark night.

He was down on his knees, hitting me some more, when I heard sirens and felt someone pull him off of me. I then stood up on my own and was joined by Nicole and Amanda, who handed me my glasses.

Once I could see again, I saw Tommy being restrained by the police, and Tyler standing out of the way. “Tyler?” I asked, shocked. “What the fuck are you doing here?”

“Well,” he said, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly, “the guy asked me where you went when you guys left the bar, and I decided to follow him to make sure you would be okay. I had no idea he would be going to the house across the street from me,” he continued, pointing to the house across the street. “Are you okay?” he asked, walking over to me to see my face better.

I turned away slightly. “What do you think?” I asked sassily. “Did you not just see me get my ass kicked?” I sighed. “I’m sorry,” I added, turning back to him. “Were you the one that pulled him off of me?” I asked. He nodded, and I gave a small smile. “Thank you.”

I then turned around again and saw the police escorting Tommy to the police car before driving off. Amanda and Nicole must have told them that I didn’t want to deal with him anymore. “Come on, let’s go get you cleaned up, Jean,” Tyler said, gently taking my arm and leading me back into the house. I was a little taken aback when he used my name, but I figured he must have heard Tommy screaming it. He led me into the kitchen and sat me up on the counter. He cringed once we were in better light.

“How bad is it? Do I want to even look?” I asked.

He shrugged. “It’s not as bad as I thought it would be, but it’s not great. You’re already getting a pretty good shiner,” he replied as he grabbed some paper towels, got them wet, and went to work cleaning the blood off my face after taking off my glasses and setting them next to me on the counter. “So, who was that guy?” he asked.

“My psycho ex-boyfriend,” I replied simply. “He was controlling and abusive so I dumped him, but he never got it through his thick skull, so he kept on coming after me.” He just nodded, understanding that that was all I wanted to say on the subject. “So you live right across the street, huh?” I asked.

He nodded. “Yep. Convenient eh?” he chuckled. “Alright, it looks like I cleaned up all the blood. Your lip is split a little bit, but besides your eye, you’ll be good as new. Want to see?” he asked.

“I’ll have to eventually,” I replied, hopping off the counter and heading toward the bathroom, Tyler following right behind. I turned on the light and cringed. I didn’t even need my glasses to see the big ugly bruise already forming around my left eye. “Fuck,” I groaned. “I’m gonna have fun explaining this one to the family,” I added, more to myself than to Tyler. “Thanks again for helping me and cleaning me up,” I said, heading out of the bathroom.

“Don’t worry about it,” he replied. “So, how long are you ladies in town for?” he asked, sitting down in a chair as I took the couch and Amanda and Nicole plopped down on the floor.

“We leave Tuesday morning,” I replied.

“Oh, cool. Would you guys want to, maybe, hang out this weekend then? Seeing as I live right across the street?” he asked.

I gave him a skeptical look. “You guys have a game Sunday night in Anaheim; aren’t you traveling tomorrow?” I asked.

I shook my head. “I’m done for the regular season, remember Miss Hockey?” he replied jokingly. I rolled my eyes. “I’m staying home for this trip; getting more rehab in to try and be ready for the playoffs. So, do you want to hang out or not?” he asked.

“Umm, we’ll see,” I replied. “I mean, I’m sure you have more important things to do than hang out with three tourists from Chicago,” I chuckled.

“I’m pretty sure I don’t have very many important things to do this weekend,” he replied. “But just in case, would you guys want to watch a movie or something now? It’s still somewhat early, and it’s only Friday,” he continued.

“I think I’m going to have to pass tonight,” I said, and his expression fell a little bit. “Don’t get me wrong, I would love to hang out and talk to you more, but it’s been a really long day, especially for me,” I continued, pointing at my face. “So I’ll have to take a raincheck on the movie, but we’ll definitely have to do something at some point,” I said with a smile as we all stood up. “But, for now, thank you again for everything, and goodnight.”

I walked him to the door and he turned and smiled. “Not a problem. I’ll see you tomorrow Jean,” he said, kissing my check like I did to him earlier in the evening and heading across the street to his house. I smiled to myself and headed up the stairs behind Amanda and Nicole, climbed into bed, and slept like a rock.
