The school day is over before I know it and I’m left in my classroom cleaning desks. Elementary schools kids are so messy! I pick up scraps of colorful paper and lost pencil to put it their respective places. Cubbies that are out of over get straightened out and I push every last little chair in.

I decide to grade some spelling quizzes, in hopes that I’ll finish them before I get home and lighten my load. When the quizzes are graded and the last sticker is placed on the ones that received an A, I pack up and go down to the main office.

“Did you text you-know-who yet?” Liza asks, looking up from her computer screen. I sign my name on the clipboard.

“No, not yet. I’ve been busy doing my job today.” Just then, John, a fifth-grade math teacher, walks in. Not going to lie, I kind of have a crush on him. He’s tall and a bit stocky with beautiful green eyes and dark brown hair that always seems perfectly tousled. He wears freaking hipster glasses top it off.

“Good afternoon ladies,” John says looking at me. I suppress a stupid grin and answer as does Liza. “How was your day, Mya?” John asks as he also signs his name. He’s wearing a navy dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up and a black tie with math symbols on it.

“It was pretty good,” I say. Liza shoots me a look and I shoot her one back, one that tells her to shut up. “How was yours, John?”

“It went well! Kids have possibly gotten fractions down so that’s good.” I crinkle my nose. I hate math and that’s why I teach English. “What’s that face about?” John laughs. Ugh, even his laugh is sexy.

“I just kinda don’t like math. Fractions are a definite no go—I never was good at them.”

“Ah, I figured. They’re not too bad, I could help you out if you ever needed a refresher,” he insists. I giggle, not sure if he’s kidding, making a move or being serious.

“I’ll let you know. Well, I gotta get going. I’ll see you tomorrow. Bye, Liza! Bye, John!”

When I get home, I kick off my shoes and throw my bag in a corner before landing face first onto my bed. How I managed to get through a whole school day hung-over is beyond me. I guess I’ll have an interesting story to tell. I lie there for a few minutes before mustering the strength to get my phone from my bag. I see I got a text from Liza stating that John was totally flirting with me and another from Joan saying I should text Sidney. Crap. I totally forgot about him. How could I! Unlocking my phone, I text Lizzie for his number to which she says “Yes! If you don’t date him I will.” Shaking my head, I tell her thanks and write up a quick message.

M: Hey it’s Mya. You know, the girl you brought breakfast ? At her job? After saving
her from an awkward encounter at the club?

I throw my phone on the other side of my bed, embarrassed that I just typed and sent that to Sidney freakin Crosby.

Ding!

I pounce on my phone to see if it’s him.

S: Haha I do remember! Sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable, the night before didn’t seem like it ended all that great for you so I thought that might cheer you up.

Oh my gosh, he is an actual angel.

M: You’re so Canadian :’D I’ll admit, it was a little much but my stomach and I appreciated it very much

S: Ahhh yeah I am, I really gotta stop saying sorry all the time. And you and your stomach are more than welcome
S: So… When can I see you again?

My heart does kickflips in my chest and I have to take a minute to squeal before I can answer him.

M: Umm when are you free?

S: Tonight
S: Or is that too soon?

M: No! That’s fine! How about Panera at 6:30ish?
M: There’s one near the school. If that isn’t too far for you

S: Sounds awesome and no it’s not.

M: Great! See you then Sidney!

S: :D See you then Mya
