Leave It To Fate

Chapter Six

There have been very few times in my career that I did not want to go to work and today is one of them. I could hardly sleep the night before due to my amazing night with Sidney and when I finally did; my dreams were filled with his gorgeous face. Not to mention that I woke up with an unusual amount of wetness between my legs but that is a completely different story.

“So,” Joan says during our lunch break, “how was your date with you-know-who?” Her voice is mischievous and her eyebrows wiggle ridiculously. I roll my eyes to play off my in coming blush but it doesn’t work due to the pitch of Joan’s squeal.

“It was great wasn’t it? I’m so excited, I need to know everything,” she shoves me gently.

“Nothing crazy happened,” I say in between bites of yogurt, “we went to eat, flirted a little… I may have kissed him on the cheek.” Joan’s eyes widen.

“Oh my gosh!” She hits my arm.

“Ow! It’s not a big deal!” I exclaim. It really isn’t, after one date I’m not going to make a big deal out of it. Even if it is one of Pittsburgh’s/the NHL’s mostly eligible bachelors. “We actually might be hanging out this afternoon.”

“What?!” Joan cries. She swats my arm again, this time harder.

“Damnit Joan, stop it!” I playfully scold her as I sooth the sting.

“Where are you two going? Wait until I tell Liza.”

“Tell Liza what?” John says as he enters the break room. He looks delicious as ever in is navy button down and black slacks. His scruff is coming in, the dark hair making his eyes pop even more. Not that I’m complaining but why the fuck is he an elementary school teacher when he could be a model? He is terribly distracting.

“Nothing,” I say quickly, shooting Joan a pointed look. She shrinks and nods in agreement. “Just some girl talk, that’s all. What’s for lunch?” I ask, avoiding anymore questions on the subject.

“Oh, never mind then and a turkey sandwich on rye,” John says holding up his Star Wars tin lunch box. He then laughs. “Why the scrunched up face, Mya?” Suddenly I’m warm and embarrassed as he sits next to me. He opens the tin and takes out his saran wrapped sandwich, unwrapping it.

“I think rye bread sucks,” I shrug. John looks at me with a weird, but pleasant, look and takes bite of his sandwich. Even the way he chews is sexy, what the heck?

“I think your opinion sucks. What did you have for lunch?”

“Wild rice with grilled beef strips, honey roasted carrots and Greek yogurt,” I answer smugly. John’s face twists with jealousy as he looks at his own lunch.

“Okay, but I still think rye bread is great.” I start to say something snarky but my phone buzzes on the table. It’s a text from Sidney. I do my very best poker face as I put the password in to answer.

S: Good morning Mya! I know you’re at work right now but I was wondering if you still
wanted to go out today?

M: Good morning Sid! Its okay and I’d love to meet up again. What do you have in
mind?

“Oh, someone is popular,” Joan teases as I get a near immediate text back from Sid. I roll my eyes and read the text.

S: Awesome, I unfortunately can’t hang out too long since the team leaves later today.
Maybe we can get coffee or something?

M: That works for me!
M: Lets meet up at the Starbucks around 4? I don’t have to stay too long after school today

S: Perfect! Looking forward to it Mya :)

It takes a lot of strength not to gush and squeal at the table but I manage.

M: Me too Sidney :)

“What’s the goofy face for?” John asks. I look knowingly at Joan and she beams, her eyes dancing with excitement.

“Oh nothing, just making plans for after school.” John examines my face and nods.

“What kinds of plans?” He asks slowly. My brows knit in confusion. Why is John suddenly so interested in my life? We’ve worked together for two years and not said much to each other until this school year.

“Date plans!” Joan blurts out. My eyes are like daggers laced with disappointment. The woman is so easily excitable, especially if it isn’t about her life.

“Yes, date plans,” I sigh. If I didn’t know better, I would say that John’s face looks jealous. Interesting. “I gotta go guys, I hate being late for the next period.” I gather my things quickly to avoid more questions. “By the way, you cannot tell anymore. The staff gossips like teenagers. And no, it’s not anyone that works here.” I wave goodbye to John and Joan before heading back to my classroom.

Once in my classroom, I put my lunch bag away and start to write adverbs on the dry erase board, willing my mind to focus on work and not the ridiculously handsome hockey player I’ll be seeing this afternoon.
